Never ending - By liesbeth

It had been two months since they saw each other, since they heard from each other. Jack was living his life again in New York while Kate was still on the run. But she missed having a person to talk to, having someone to laugh and to cry with. So she called the one person who could make her feel safe again, just with one question popping in her head “Jack, can I stay with you for a while?” A story about a never ending love.

Chapter 1

“Hello, Hospital of New York. Maria Johnson speaking, how can I help you?” The woman behind the desk answered the phone and said the sentence she said everyday, every hour, every minute when someone called.

“Euhm Hi Maria. I was wondering if I could speak to Doctor Shephard ? Asked the young woman on the other line, the old Maria sighed, smiling against the phone.

“Okay, first of all my child I have to know if you’re one of his island groupies?” The woman asked, waiting for an answer.

“Island groupies?” The other voice asked.

“Yes, island groupies; since Doctor Shephard returned from that island, I’m more a blind date office then a receptionist of a hospital. Or are you from the press for an interview or photo shoot.” The old woman explained.

“Oh..euhmm. No I’m just having a problem and I need some doctors advice. It won’t take long.”
The other woman smiled, well actually she was one of his island groupies, since the day she met him on the island she was his groupie.

“In that case, I put you trough.” The woman said and dialled the number of Doctor Jack Shephard.

“Yes Maria?” a soft, warm voice said. Maria shivered she loved his voice.

“There is a young woman for you on line four.”

“Is this again about a date?” Jack laughed into the phone.

“No, no she said it was about a medical problem. Nothing big she just needed some advice.”

“Oh okay put her through.” Jack said as he was looking with a soft smile at his desktop.
On his desktop there was a picture of the island and all the castaways. Everyone was smiling and hugging each other. It was taken on the golf course, after the first island opens.
Shannon had found a digital camera, but the battery was empty after already one picture, a group picture.

Jack smiled as he was looking at the person next to him. Of course that was Kate. He had his arm around her and was laughing at her as she stoke out her tongue to him. He remembered that moment like it was yesterday.

“Kate you’ve to smile on the picture or everyone will think you’re the monster.”

It has been almost two months since he last saw her, in his hut on the ship.

Jack was sitting on his bed, getting ready to live his old life again.

“Knock knock.” A voice said as she entered his room. Jack smiled.
“Can I come in?” she asked soft almost scared.

“Sure.” Jack said as he stood up to face her.

“Eumh you better sit down Jack.” She forced a smile. Jack gave her a confused look.

“Jack please, I’m trying to say goodbye.”

‘Kate, I already told you. This isn’t goodbye. I’m going to visit you every week, every day. We...” Kate shook her head and interrupted him.

“Jack, I know what I said but I just can’t. I can’t ruin your life like that and I can’t dig in.

“Kate...” Jack begun soft as he took her hands in his, he could see her shiver.

“No Jack, I had a hard time on this island, I never stayed so long at one place, with the same persons, with you.” She begun as she turned around to face the wall, her eyes filled with water. She had decided not to cry before she entered his room, but that was harder than she thought it would be. “I never had felt so free before. When I was on the island, when I was with you, I felt safe, I wasn’t afraid anymore. You know?” she turned around the tears were now resting on her cheek; she had to force herself to look in his eyes.

“Kate, I...I understand.” Was all he could say, he took a step closer towards her. He moved his hand towards her face and gently wiped the tear away. He wanted to kiss her but maybe then the goodbye would be harder then it already was. She looked up at him, meeting his warm eyes.
She loved his eyes; she loved his eyes so much. Telling her everything would be alright, telling her she was safe.

“Guess this is it, huh?” she smiled still the tears in her eyes.

“I guess it is.” He smiled back, his hand caressing her cheek. He felt the tears coming in his eyes; he could hold himself any longer, so he pulled her in a hug. His one hand resting on the back of her head his fingers in her hair, while his other hand was caressing her back.

He could feel her sobbing against his shoulder as her hands were on his back, holding him closely. “Goodbye, Jack.” She said as she moved out of his arms, she turned around towards his door and left. “Goodbye Kate.” He whispered to himself before he softly begun to cry, putting his hands in front of his eyes, as he let himself fall on the bed.

A tear felt on his desk. He was pulled out of his flashback by a voice on the other line of the phone.

“Hello?” the voice said. Jack cleared his throat.

“Ehmm Hi, doctor Shephard’s office.” Jack said, trying to control his emotions.

“So doctor Shephard I heard you’re popular with the lady’s now.” The woman said as she was laughing. Jack recognized this laugh, so soft, so full with warm and happiness. Which made him shiver; there was only one woman who could do that to him.

“Kate?”

Chapter 2

“Hi Jack.” Kate smiled on the other side of the line.

“Whoa. I…euhm...is...Is this really you?” He asked, unable to say something else.

“Yeah...surprise!” Jack laughed. He still couldn’t believe it was Kate. His Kate.

“So they haven’t found you?” Jack asked happy.

“No they haven’t, at least not yet. They are searching for me Jack.” Kate said frustrated.

“Yeah, I know I saw the news.”

“That’s why I haven’t much time to call. I’m in a public phone cell, If someone...”

“I understand.” Jack smiled, he missed her so much. Hearing her voice made him happy again. Hearing she was okay.

“Jack, I’ve…euhm…I’ve got a question for you?” Kate began waiting for an answer.

“Sure, just ask me.” Jack answered, knowing she was afraid to ask him something.

“Can…euhm…Can I stay with you for a while. It doesn’t have to be long. Just for a week or maybe a little bit more. I’m coming to New York tomorrow and I need a place to stay. And I thought maybe I could stay with you because you live there and…” Kate blurted out.

“Of course you can.” Jack smiled, hearing Kate nervous made him smile.

“And I don’t know anyone there.” She stopped after realising he already answered. “Did you just say yes?” Kate asked already smiling because she knew he said yes, she just wanted to hear it again.

“Yes Kate, you can stay with me as long as you want.” Jack said enthusiastic.

“Oh Jack thank you so much! I don’t have a lot of time rest so I see you tomorrow maybe we can meet in a café?” She asked serious.

“You’re joking, right?” he asked but he knew she wasn’t. “Kate, I’ll wait for you at your gate.”

“Oh okay that’s even better. My flight lands at 11 am in New York, coming from Canada, don’t be late.”

“I’m never late.” Jack laughs.

“Ha-ha , I need to go now. Can’t wait to see you. Bye Jack.”

The next thing he knew the sound of the buzzer was the only sound that filled the room. He smiled to himself, repeating her last words in his head. ‘Can’t wait to see you.’ He looks at his clock.

“4 Pm.” He sighed. “I can’t wait to see you too, Kate.” He said before he leaved his office, whistling.

The airport is crowded, people going here and there, waiting, and chatting.

Jack, dressed in jeans and a grey shirt with a brown jacket, is speaking on his cell phone and glancing at his watch from time to time as he paces back and forth in front of the gate where her plane was scheduled to land. 'Ten more minutes,' he thinks as he was chatting with the person on the other line, someone from work. He wasn’t even listening. He just wanted to see Kate, to hold her. He was nervous, he never had been nervous about a girl before. But Kate made him nervous.

The flight had been long and Kate was tired, even though she had been sleeping actually she thinks she had even snored once, how embarrassing the whole trip.
She can't wait to see him. The one person who always was there for her. Even if she had lied to him, even if she had run away after kissing him, he still could forgive her. Still being her best friend on the island, still being the person who comforted her, still being the man she could only dream of. She was glad nobody had recognized her; even on the airport of Canada she hadn’t had any problems. She looks outside her window, she saw that they approached the airport and her excitement grows.

A big smile appears on her face when the captain announces they're about to land. She looks through the window impatient to see him, impatient to be with him again.
She felt so alone, so scared. She didn’t just wanted to be with him again for the company she wanted to be with him because…because the man who he was, Jack, her Jack.

Looking at his watch once more he realizes that the plane should have landed by now. He walks to the airport screens as he speaks and sees that it actually has. He smiles and felt a weird feeling in his stomach, a weird feeling but it wasn’t an unknown feeling. He felt it every time when he was with Kate, when she touched him, when he touched her. He turned around, walking to the gate again. Still no sign of her, he sighs, continuing his conversation.

She walks out of the plane, through the gate. She was almost running, she wasn’t even thinking that someone could recognize her. She stopped and tilled her head a bit, standing on the tips of her toes so she could see him and she did. He is in the crowd of the people that fills the place. She smiles to herself ‘God he is handsome.’ she thought. Dressed in a jeans and a brown shirt, with a brown leather jacket, the jacket opened, she runs towards him. His back is to her, still talking to his cell phone. “I know just…” he continued.

But was interrupted when two arms wrap around his neck from behind, pulling him closer to someone he knows very well. Someone he missed so much. A loud kiss lands on his cheek, making him smile brightly even making him a little bit embarrassed.

"I'll call you later," Jack says, and turns into her embrace. His hands were on her back, caring it gently, as her head was buried in his neck. Their hugs had always been so comfortable, so safe, even if they last always a little bit longer; they still felt like they wanted them to last longer.

“Welcome in New York.” Jack said, smiling, as he kissed her soft on her temple. Kate closed her eyes, and smiled.

“I see you’re busy, as always.” She said looking to the cell phone in his hands.
Jack groans, putting the cell phone in his pocket.

“Well Kate I’m a doctor.” She laughed remembering he said the exact same words when they were golfing.

“I miss the island.” She said looking directly in his eyes.

“Yeah I miss the island too, but most of all I missed you.” He smiled and saw Kate bending her head in embarrassment, and then she smiled back up.

“That rhymes” She laughed and Jack joined as he took her bag.

“You’re coming?” He asked and started to walk.

“Jack…euhm…they probably have control posts at the exit. So we’ve to be careful.”

“Why don’t we pretend we are married or something?” He smiled as he turned around. Kate stopped walking and smiled to Jack, her hands on her hips, as she raised an eye brown.

“They would never disturb a happy couple.” Jack smiled knowing he was right.

“That’s true.” She said and walked closer to him. He putted his arm around her shoulder and she wrapped her arm around his waist.

“Come on honey, let’s go home.” He joked and Kate laughed leaning against him. She was happy to finally be with him again. They looked at each other and laughed as they walked out the airport to Jack's car.

“For someone on the run, you don’t look to bad.” He winked at her, opening his car door so she could step in. She smiled, putting her arm sweetly before her face so she could hide her embarrassment, something about him made her feel like a teenager again, made her feel happy again. “Just like on the island.” He smiled as he putted her bag in the back seat. He saw how she bitted her lip. Actually she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen but maybe saying that was too much, maybe he already said too much. But he couldn’t help it; he couldn’t help how she made him feel.

He only didn’t know what he was feeling.
