Exclamation Complete Visual Analysis of Hatch Interior (+ Maps!)

Introduction

This is my analysis of the Hatch interior. I've analyized all the videos of the hatch interior. And its taken quite some of time to get the map right. Especially to let every screenshot "fit" with the constructed map. It was frikin' hard to get everything to match . But the result is a very precise map.

I will show an analysis of several areas of the interior. Some screenshots are accompanied by a corresponding map which shows the camera view in color. This is very helpful in understanding what you are actually looking at in context to the rest of the interior. It also proves the map is accurate. I hope you enjoy these context-maps...

In the end I will give you a complete map of the whole hatch interior. Also a complete labeled map labeling every object in the map and several other maps like a light-path map showing the path which the light takes when Desmond uses his telescope and a walking-path map showing the path Jack walked.

I have split it into several subjects:

  • First the areas seen in the first scenes of the episode:

    1. Bunk beds
    2. Living corner
    3. Dining table
    4. Kitchen
    5. Training area
    6. The shower
    7. Medicine locker
    8. Control panel
    9. Uniforms
    10. Weapons room
    11. The telescope
  • Then the areas seen in the last scenes of the episode:

    12. Tunnel
    13. Pipes and Boilers
    14. The mural
    15. Magnetic room
    16. Computer dome
  • And at the end your get the full map:

    17. The Maps
I will show screenshots and some analysis regarding each subject. That way it stays organized and readable. In between I will comment on how something fits into the timeline. With certain screenshots I will also show on the map what the camera view is. This will show the map is indeed accurate. I've tried to create one context-map for each subject (keep in mind though that these context-maps are half the size of the real map).

All screenshots have very high resolution (960x544 pixels) which is great for further detailed analysis. Some of them have been brightened to show more details in dark backgrounds.

1. Bunk beds

The episode start with Desmond lying in his bed. You see him lying in the top of two bunk beds. On the lower bed there are books lying which might indicate its being used (by somebody else). This is a first indication he is/was not alone. Or at least the place is not build for one person only.

Later you see the beds again from a different angle when Desmond is working out. You can clearly see the (artificial?) daylight in the background. Keep in mind minutes later the hatch is blown so its still midnight. This means Desmond lives at a different time frame/cycle than our beloved survivers.

Its also possible he is awakened by the computer (which has turned on the "daylights") and thinks: "well. now that I am awake lets stay awake and do my things". Its however more likely he lives at night (for him daylight).

2. Living corner

After typing the numbers (4-8-15-16-23-42) into the computer (and the computer stopping to beep) he goes into his living "room" and turns on some music. The following screenshot is accompanied by a map showing the camera view in color.

You can watch at the map and see everything "fits". You can see the locked door to the weapons on the right side. Also the vinil player and the lava lamp. The little black table in the front is in a later shot removed.

3. Dining table

After turning on the music Desmond he goes to his dining table (with two couches). It has a backgammon game on it which indicates he has played a game with another person. There is also a book and a magazine on opposite sides of the table. However you see only one cup and one glass.

Again you see the "daylight" in the back. In a later screenshot you can see they are still lit even though Desmond switched off the lights to see clearly through his telescope.

You can see its dark but it seems there is a "chamber" behind the window which still emits light. The red medicine locker can be seen on the left which will be discussed later.

4. Kitchen

After picking up some dishes from the dining area he walks to the kitchen table and starts washing them. Interesting because he seems to have a dish washer. Anyway, the following screenshot shows the kitchen area. There is a context-map aswell which gives you a good idea what you're looking at.

You can see the bunk beds in the back. To the left in the back is the working out/training area. You can see some weights. The bicicle on the right is later moved to the back in the left. The black workout bench (just visible behind the kitchen table) is moved towards the bunk beds.

Here you see him washing a bowl.

Desmond also makes some breakfast later on. He uses the blender to mix some fruits. How fresh are they?

In the back (on the left side) you can vaguely see the handle of what apears to be the oven.

5. Training area

Before he starts making breakfast though he does some training. First he does some cycling.

Then he does pull-ups. You can see the dryer/cleaner in the back

And some sit-ups.

6. The shower

The location of the shower has not been detected. Its likely its somewhere near the beds or training area. Perhaps in the area which hasn't been filmed yet in the lower left of the map.

7. Medicine locker

After doing all the above Desmond goes to a red medicine locker containing vials.

Here you can see the location of the medicine locker in context with the dining table. Its on the left.

On the vials there are the numbers "CR 4-81516-23 42" and the wordings "For Injection", "KmL. Multiple Dose Vial", "RX-1" and "??????????? for use See Package ????". The last sentence probably referring to the storage life of the medicine or a description of how-to-use the medicine. He then injects some medicine into his arm.

At this moment the Dynamite goes off and the music players stops. This means its in the middle of the night. Jack and Locke are looking into the hatch for the first time.

8. Control panel

When Desmond hears the bang he turns around and you see the living corner. The shot you see is horizontally flipped (by the editors). If you flip it back you can see its the same place. (The flipped version cannot be right because the vinil player has its arm on the wrong side.) Here is the screenshot with the flipping restored:

You can see a lot of details in this shot. Desmond walks towards the control panel from which he turns off the lights. You can see the arching metallic wall in the back. The small round thing is the small mirror he later turns. When he switches off the light the camera turns around and you can see part of the corridor and the mural.

It was hard to make all these screenshots fit with the map. The context maps show the map is very accurate indeed.

9. Uniforms

Desmond puts on a uniform. There appear to be four of them.

He also puts on some shoes which happens in near the beds. When desmond is fully clothed he quickly walks towards the living corner.

10. Weapons room

He unlocks a door with a combination ending with 23 and 47.

He then enters the weapons room. The following screenshot is very hard to match. Take any map you've seen so far and I'm pretty sure it won't match. But as you can see in the context-map my map does match.

The reason why it is so difficult to match this screenshot with the map is because the field of view is very narrow. This means several object have to line up. You can see the wall of the weapons room on the left. A small piece of the garbage container but not the kitchen table itself, the dining area in the back and the pillar to the right (but not the tennis table).

It appears he takes a handgun and a rifle (possibly an AK-47). Clearly he is well trained and well prepared.

11. The telescope

After being armed Desmond walks to the area where in an earlier shot the bycicle was positioned. He pulls some sort of telescope out of the ceiling and turns it towards a little mirror in the corridor. He then uses some switches to turn the mirror so he can see where the bang came from.

How the mirrors together combine a "light-path" which will be shown later on. But there are actually 4 mirrors involved.

12. Tunnel

When Jack goes down the shaft he enters a tunnel. The walls are very rough unlike other parts of the complex. In the distance you can see a large pipe close just where the concrete walls begin.

He also sees a fairly large lamp embedded into the wall. Is it possible this caused the light beam (via the mirror on the floor) when Kate went down the shaft? And can it be turned so that later on the light is pointed into the complex when Jack is 'lit'?

13. Pipes and Boilers

Jack then enters the "boiler" room. I'm not sure the pipes lead to boilers but it sort of looks that way. There is a round "boiler" like large object to the right in the next screenshots. The small "hole" in it is in fact a small mirror which will be discussed later on. The large pipe is to the left.

The large pipe on the left appears to be connected with another "boiler" on the left. In the next shot Jack has walked past the pipe and looks to the left. There is some kind of electronic box/switch with a lamp next to it.

A bit to the right you see another larger box which has some black pipes or thick cables attached to its top. In fact this box can also be seen in a different screenshot from the beginning of the episode where it has a sign/logo on it.

As you can see you are now looking at it from the other side. You can see the lamp, the electronic switch and the thick pipe. Also you see the sign/logo on the box with black pipes attached to the top. Note the large round "boiler" like object to the right and the fact there is a small mirror on it.

We also see what appear to be Locke's shoes.

14. The mural

Jack keep on walking and reaches the painting/mural. There are quite some numbers on it and all kind of clues (I'm not going to discuss that here). The painting tools lie in front of it indicating this mural was painted not so long ago (or isn't ready yet).

15. Magnetic room

When Jack looks to the right he sees two different alcoves. One has a green and red indicator lights the other one has not. The bars on front of them are also arranged differently. Both seems to have some burn scorching.

It almost looks like the room behind it is barricaded with wooden planks. The alcove with the indicator lights has some buckets in front of it which seem sprayed by a fire extinguisher. When Jack looks into the hole in the wooden planks his key is drawn towards the room behind it.

Here is a screenshot when looking at it from the other side of the corridor. You can clearly see the "arching" of the metallic walls indicating this could be part of a huge electromagnet.

Is it possible the arched metallic walls are part of a giant electromagnet? And something gone horribly wrong with in that "magnet room"?

17. Computer dome

Jack hears the small mirror turn and looks at it. The music begins to play loud and a bright light comes from the direction of the hatch shaft.

Jack runs into the computer dome and is probably as amazed as we were at what he sees there.

He takes a look around at all the equipment and then walks to the Apple computer in the center.

When he wants to press the execute button Locke says he shouldn't do that and we see Locke standing in the living area of the complex. Desmond then points a gun at him. And Jack recognizes him.

This screenshot shows there is again a very narrow field of view into the living area. But the context-map shows the map is correct.

Here is another (closer) shot:

You can see parts of the kitchen in the background and the oven in the back wall.

Jesus, that's some in-depth analysis!

Really well done getting all the screenshots to fit and nice work showing how you came at the results, no doubt many people will question certain things because of the whole "mirror-image" scene and the moving objects but I think this is spot on and answers many questions about the spatial settings.

One thing though, where the places are "fuzzed out", is that because there wasn't a good enough screenshot to see what was actually down there? There seems to be scope for many other corridors and rooms off the main entranceway if this is the case.

Oh, and special commendations for plotting the light path, that's genius!

Its nice to hear it helps understanding the layout of the place. That was the main intend.

Yes. The "fuzzed out" parts are unfilmed places. Basicly no idea whats there. I think the showers are at the fuzzy part near the training area/bicycle.

That was indeed very hard because there were half-a-dozen horizontally flipped and duplicated shots in there. I still got a headache .
