That also makes sense. They studied the island for its unusual magnetism so they came up with the Swan and after that the Pearl, for supervision and also for psychological research. But things happen after that, they found other misterious properties of the island and they went further with their research. Then things gone terribly wrong: there was an incident, Others group showed up doing.. who knows? (yet), an assumed sickness, a smoke monster wandering around.. a chaos on the Dharma island. But this chaos is still maintained by someone, as we saw the food for the Swan is still supplied.
So, by the end of Lost, we should know the whole twisted history of the island and the Dharma iniative.

Hey, I don't know if any of this has already been covered, but I'm at work so don't have the time to read through everything that has been said.

Couple of thoughts.

Marvin Candle and Mark Wickman are the same guy, that seemed obvious to me. The fact that has doesn't have a false arm in the new video is not weird, it just supports the whole idea of a hoax, or ruse. Remember the fake beards in the medical hatch? Someone, for some reason is trying to present a facade to the characters.

The Pearl station is, in my opinion, definitely NOT the question mark. The question mark is central to all the stations, and in my opinion, is the revelation that we will discover at the end of the show. Maybe the source of power for the island, or where the big wigs sit and survey their handywork? The question mark is pivotal to the show, of that I am sure, and I don't think they would show us that so early in proceedings.

There's mention of a ferry. If there's a ferry (and based on certain things that happen in the next episode, which I wont go into cos they're spoilers), why don't the Others leave? This really backs up my theory that whatever has been going on here, experiment wise, has been abandoned for some time, with the "scientists" just left there, maybe they are the Others? Maybe the Others chose to stay and rebelled against Dharma? Whatever, I am sure that the work being done there has long since been discontinued (if it ever was happening in the first place - my facade theory again), although that doesn't tie in the food drops, which I haven't figured out yet.

Anyone else wanna run with these ideas?

There was some work being done there because we seen Kelvin working there. And he even said that he joined the Dharma group. And if there is a food drop off that means that some one expects people to be in the stations. Plus the Medical station looked to be kept very clean and in good shape untill Claire got away. And the people in that station seemed to be wearing the scrubs and Ethan with the Dharma equipment. But the Pearl looked like noone had been there in a long time. But so did the Medical hatch when Claire and Kate went back. It is just to hard to say what is going on with the Other or Dharma people. That is if they are different people.

Well, many are wondering wether Others and Dharma people are different or not.
But we have seen at least Ethan wearing one of these suits, Tom wearing a classic shirt, Alex wearing a clean, relatively modern shirt.
So: why would others carry out experiments in a Dharma hatch if they are not part of Dharma? Okay, they're not like the initial scientist, but they still do some work around Dharma. Clean and not so old clothes tell us that Others did get some supply from the outside world and I think they can leave the island periodically.
And they can have a better larger functional boat hidden somewhere.. the real ferry.
Spoiler: 'They're pretending' said Walt.. The boat Michael is leaving in must be also just for show-up.. rusty, old, low-power. The 'ferry' is something else and I think the Others are using it at times.
Sorry if I'm going wrong somewhere, but it's in the middle in the night right now..

I just rewatched this episode, and I do find one thing strange about this now that we've seen The Incident.

He received his injury in the Incident, which was before / while the Swan station was even built. So, the injury also took place BEFORE they realized there was a need to release the built up energy every 108 minutes by pressing the button (in the Swan Orientation, he says that SINCE the Incident, the protocols have been in place).

YET!!! In the Pearl Orientation, he states that the people in the other stations THINK what they are doing is important, and that it is a psychological experiment. We assume at this point that he was referring to the pushing of the button every 108 minutes. But he's clearly got the use of BOTH arms during this orientation, so this orientation was clearly filmed BEFORE the Swan station, and the need for the button, even existed. So what the hell was he referring to as the "important thing" the subjects being observed thought they were doing?
