LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- With just two months until production begins, the director of "X-Men 3" has left the Fox project, citing personal reasons.

The Marvel superhero sequel would have marked the first big-budget studio project for Matthew Vaughn, who made his directing debut with the gangster tale "Layer Cake."

"X3," with a cast that includes Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry, is scheduled to begin production August 2 for release on May 26, 2006. Vaughn is the second director to be involved in the project. Bryan Singer, who directed the first two "X-Men" features, had been expected to direct the third, but when he chose to take on Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming "Superman Returns," Fox abruptly cut its ties with him.

Fox insisted that Vaughn's departure had nothing to do with either creative differences or the pressures of mounting the multimillion-dollar project.

Instead, Vaughn, who had planned to commute between the film's Vancouver location and his family in London, said that he'd come to realize that he would have to move to L.A. and Vancouver for a year, and he decided he did not want to uproot his family for an extended period.

"We understand Matthew's reasons for leaving, as nothing is more important than family," Fox president Hutch Parker said.

"Luckily, we have a fantastic script, the original cast is returning, and there will be some great new characters. We will decide shortly among several directors who are keenly interested in the project and are fully committed to remaining right on schedule."

Well, I am just gald that the original cast is coming back. Rumor had it that Hugh was not interested in making a part 3...

Me too along with Spiderman it's been the only decent Marvel franchise so far. I would LOVE it if a lost cast member could land a role in it.

I'm so pumped it isn't even funny. But I thought that Halle Barry said she wouldn't be Storm anymore? I heard that Maggie Grace would play Kitty Pride, as well. That makes a different Kitty for every movie so far. Oh! And it starts filming on my birthday. What a lovely gift. :cloud9:

As long as Hugh is in it, I'm going to see it ;) :D

Maggie is going to be in it?? That's great, I don't think I remember seeing her in anything except Lost.

I dont like Halle Barry(I dont know how to write her name), as long as Hugh and James Marsden are in it!

I thought Halle Berry said she wasn't doing it either unless Storm got more screen time. Maybe they came to terms with her or something. So the orginal actors are coming back? Awesome. I had heard that James that played Cyclops wasn't coming back but now he is and yadda yadda yadda. I still can't picture Kesley Grammar as Beast. They should have kept that Steve guy that played Beast on the TV screen in X2.

Haha, it's so funny, seeing the topic titled "X-Men 3" reminds me of the fic that I'm writing about what I think should take place in the next movie.

They've got to have Gambit in this one though! They're getting Beast and Archangel for crying out loud! No Cajun and I just might blow a fuse.

There are no words to express how excited I am about this movie, and how elated I am that it's actually going to happen. As long as Hugh Jackman and Anna Paquin are still in it, I'm beyond happy. :D Wolverine and Rogue are my favorite characters, and if the actors who play them do not return, I will cry. I couldn't imagine those two being played by anyone else, or any of the other characters for that matter. :( I've heard so many rumours of many of the cast not coming back for X-3, and I hope none of them are true. :worry:

Shawn Ashmore on X-Men 3
Source: Calgary Sun; May 21, 2005

Shawn Ashmore talked to the Calgary Sun about returning as Iceman in X-Men 3:

"Iceman's back as far as I know. There's a start date sometime this summer, but I don't know the details. As far as I know, everybody's back. So it's pretty exciting."

Replacing Singer is Matthew Vaughn, producer of Snatch and the director of the forthcoming gangster drama Layer Cake.

So far Kelsey Grammer (as the Beast) and Vinnie Jones (as the evil Juggernaut) have joined the cast.

"It's going to be interesting to have some new blood brought in and get someone else's take on it."

Ashmore nearly reunited with Singer on the Superman movie. He was the director's first choice to play Jimmy Olsen. "It was a conflict as far as timing. It's unfortunate. But I'm so happy to be in the X-Men group. It was a good problem to have."

I hope that's a good sign, and that imdb.com isn't completely accurate.

Also, I too read that Maggie Grace was toying with the idea of playing Kitty Pryde. That would be interesting. I read this and the above news article at Superhero Hype! (http://www.superherohype.com/).

I read Alan Cummings (nightcrawler) is not returning and that in the script Cyclops is dead. From the reports I've seen this sequel is going down the toilet.

I love Nightcrawler! I don't really care about Cyclops but he can't be dead, that would be completly against the comic book lore....I hope none of that is true :(

Why make it if they are gonna go away from the comic books? If this is true... all I can say is: Stupid Writers

I heard that Cyclops is back but he has a minor role in this one. I am pretty sure he isn't dead.

Alan Cummings is not returning for X3. MTV.com reported this news and Alan's publicists confirmed it.

Cumming: No Nightcrawler in X-Men 3

For his latest adventure, blue-skinned superhero Nightcrawler has once again vanished into nothingness -- however, this time he won't be reappearing, reports MTV.com.
Actor Alan Cumming has announced on his website that he will not be coming to Vancouver in August to shoot the third X-Men movie, a decision that signals at least the temporary shelving of arguably the most popular character of 2003's X2.
Referring to Cumming as an "Ex X Man!!," the actor's site says, "Alan will NOT be appearing in X3. Fox has not picked up his option to play Nightcrawler for a second movie."
A publicist for Cumming confirmed the announcement's validity.
The posting one the actor's "Up and Cumming" movie page comes as a shock after the star's insistence that he would be in X3 as recently as in February's press tour for Son of the Mask.
It may also come as a surprise to new X3 director Brett Ratner, who told MTV News two weeks ago that "everybody" would be returning.
Originally introduced in 1974 as part of a Marvel Comics effort to form a team of international superheroes, Nightcrawler is the alias for Kurt Wagner, a German mutant with the ability to transport himself instantaneously.

True, Nightcrawler wasn't my favorite character, but I will still miss the blue German with the heart of gold. Plus, you have to give him points for saving my dear Rogue in X2. Alan Cumming was hillarious and it sucks that he won't be returning. Hopefully this won't signal the refusal of more of the cast to come back.

I suppose I can...this movie is gonna blow :(
Supposedly, Jean Grey will return as "The Phoenix", which happens in the comics. However, she is unable to control her powers and kills two main characters, one being Scott aka Cyclops. That DOES NOT happen in the comics. Oh, ya, and Storm and Logan aka Wolverine have some kind of sexual relationship going on. WHAT?!
