two great things about livejournal:
1) Communities; it's just great to find people who love similar issues/musicians/TV SHOWS/ships/ and etc. especially music swapping ones are great. and comments are sex, literally. great way to discuss stuff, oh AND make friends.

(btw, LJ also had image hosting, but I'm not sure if it's just for paid members or not.) But really, the internet is big enough for a million journal places. :)

You can add colors to your LJ by going to Manage -- Customize -- Old System (that's what I use, I have no idea what New System is) -- Modify Journal. Then there are some color schemes and mood icons that you can mess with! Overrides are also an option to completely customize your journal. You can go here for some awesome LJ overrides. http://www.ljlayouts.org/

Eventually you get a hang of the code and you can make your own LJ overrides. :D

To add someone to your friends list you can go to their user info and hit the little button at the top that says Add Friend. It looks like a little person with a plus sign next to their head.

Sayid_fan, with a free account you have customization capabilities though not quite as many as a you would with a paid account. Go to the main page, sign in, and go to customize (it's under "Manage"). When you have to choose your style system select the new system (S2) because the S1 system is extremely limited. From there just follow the steps. Hope that helps!
