I don't think it's that no one questions it, but it's something that we've known about since season 4. I think everyone's gotten a little used to it by now. Speaking for myself, I know it's still something I want to be answered, just like Hurley talking to the dead, but that doesn't take away from how awesome this scene was ;)

Since the writers made that an elemental and critical part of his character in the first few minutes that we met him, then yes I accept the fact that he listens to the dead.
This is a fictional story after all. Especially in this kind of story, a large amout of suspension of belief is key as we meet the character, and then as the character develops.

I accept it because there was an entire episode about it last season. I'd be upset if "all of a sudden" Miles had this ability, but we've known about it for awhile, and it's come into play a number of times. As for the cause of his power, who knows? Some people can talk to the dead, he's one of them. Jennifer Love Hewitt is another.

I agree 100%. I do not question much about the show that is consistent: Miles can talk to the dead. How he got that way, I have no idea, nor do I care. Heck, I'm no longer even curious about what Walt's special powers are/were. I am curious about the ship on the island, what the heck is up with Richard and how these people can bump into each other on the island and say things like, "Hey, Kate, where you going?" and then let them just walk off alone in the jungle as if they were strolling into the mall. "Well, catch you later. Keep in touch. Good luck at the Temple."

What's your beef? Miles has been talking to the dead for almost two seasons now. I mean, crap, dead people have been walking around since the first episode, there has been a "smoke monster" since the first episode, and people can be made pseudo-immortal.

Miles holding the diamond is a way of showing that he dug them out without wasting time on pointlessly showing him digging. That way they can focus on what the episode was actually about, Ben. The whole diamond thing was just a way to tie up loose ends: the money Miles wanted from Ben, and Nicky and Paulo. Just something to show Ben's desperation at that time.

And that Miles appears to be here just for entertainment purposes at this point. He doesn't seem to be a major player and rarely has dialogue of any consequence, other than "Hey, where have you been?" :)

In Miles' defense, he DID tell Kate last week that Claire was back.

Seriously, it's the major theme of the show: a group of narcissistic people crashing on an island who pretend to care about each other. And we've been hooked enough for the past 6 years to keep watching.

What I'd like to know is how, with Ben digging away on Boone Hill and with Ilyana holding a gun on Ben the whole time, how is it that no one noticed Miles digging up, or at least sifting the dirt over Nikki's grave.
I LOVE that he went for the diamonds, though. Can't blame him, but I think they're "cursed," too, with the murders and attempted murders that surround them. Even Sawyer felt that way so he dumped them loose in Nikki's grave.

See, this is when I wonder if some people are watching the same show as I am.
The writers have "explained" this aspect of Miles as much as they are going to, and anyone expecting to understand anything more about Miles' ability is going to be disappointed.
Yes, there are mysteries on this show that will be addressed (why the black rock is 1 mile inland, why Richard doesn't age, why the island is underwater in the flash sideways), but things like "why Miles can see dead people?" aren't mysteries. As another poster said, there is a certain suspension of reality that must go on when watching a sci-fi show like this (there's a SMOKE MONSTER for goodness sake). The writers showed us that Miles has had this ability since he was a child. It's just a talent or "gift" he has (and not to mention an ingenious plot device), period.
This reminds me of another post where someone said "I hope they explain how the mirrors work in the lighthouse" This is fiction, people!!! There is no scientifically sound explanation for why a mirror in a lighthouse on an island in the middle of the ocean would show certain places on the Earth when it's turned to certain degrees. It's just "magic," like the Island. If people can't take things like the mirrors and realize that they just are what they are, the show isn't for me, IMO.
i still think Miles saw more than he's told about his visions from being on top of Juliet's grave. he seemed to be trying to make sense of that.

Because something stupid has been going on for a long time doesnt mean its any less stupid. Dead people havent been walking around for the first episode necessairly, it could very well be the smoke monster. And the difference is, I am expecting an explanation of why Christian is walking around, while im not expecting anything else on why Miles is a necromancer. So I will not complain about Christian when I have yet to see the reasoning.
Nobody is pseudo-immortal, non-aging is not impossible to achieve theoretically, and thats the kind of thing science fiction is supposed to contain.
Again, the smoke monster i still expect an answer to. But i definetly prefer smoke monsters to necromancy either way.

I also think there is more to Miles' ability than he admits. Remember the episode where he was being a ghost buster? He went up into the dude's room and had a conversation with the ghost and learned where the money was hidden. He did that without the body, as well. Something's not quite right about that.

When I saw that Miles had a diamond, and realized that he dug them up, I thought of something else. There has always been a strong focus on the show about burying the dead. Everyone seems to be willing to forestall their missions to make sure the dead get buried. It was while Locke was unburied that MiB was able to take his form...then they buried him. And Ilana also said he is now stuck as Locke. Just saying...
So if Miles dug up Nikki and/or Paulo to get the diamonds...did he re-bury them completely? And the funny thing is what Lock said to Paulo in the episode Expose, "Nothing on this island stays buried." And now it looks like Paulo himself didn't stay buried.
Not really sure yet the significance of not being buried, but I do think there is some significance. Thoughts?
One last thing to add: The first season when Hurley and Charlie are burying Ethan, Hurley made some reference to Ethan rising up as a zombie. He also asked Sayid if he was a zombie. Maybe we have zombies in a future episode. Probably not, but I can dream. lol

OK the first thing that crossed my mind was how ridiculously hard it would be to find loose diamonds scattered on top of a couple of corpses buried several feet down. You'd probably have to have some way of sifting the soil.
And the second thing that I thought was "So none of the other people there had any objection to Miles desecrating a couple of graves?" If anything I'd expect Sun to speak up. After the way she insisted that they bury Locke. But I guess that Nikki and Paulo were just so unlikable that nobody really cares what you do to them.

Miles has got to be one of my favorite "side" characters. I love that he went after the diamonds. I also agree with Billy BK that there is more to his ability than he's letting on. The guy plays his cards close to his chest. Seems he sets limits on his ability so no one can take advantage of him or expect more than he's willing to give.

I'm hearing a lot of people say they thought it was great - that it was just a way to "wrap up" that Nikki and Paulo crap.
But I think everything we're seeing this year has something to do with each person's internal scale of good vs. evil.
I think Miles and the diamonds will be crucial for his future as we move forward. Was that his internal scale tipping toward evil (greed)?
Maybe you all are right, and this is nothing more than a nice little side piece for us to enjoy, and wrap up an old storyline. But I think it might be more.

While I think you might be right(each person's internal scale of good vs. evil), I don't really see it as greed. I mean there is for 8 millions of diamonds right there buried in the sand doing nothing. Why would it be bad to take them? Greed would have been to take Ben's money and the diamonds. I think it might just have been a funny moment with Miles.

At the end of the episode, we see Miles holding the diamonds that Nikki and Paulo buried. Is this a clue that the greedy Miles we first met is still there?
If so, why hasn't MIB made a pass to convert him yet? If I were MIB, I would offer Miles a large sum of money and I'm sure he'd be on my side in a heartbeat.
This leads me to believe that A) MIB doesn't care about Miles because he's not important/a Candidate, B) MIB still has plans for Miles, or C) MIB doesn't really know who Miles is, but may want him on his side in the future.
I really hope not, because Miles is sort of our mini-Sawyer. He started out as a total A-hole and quickly grew into someone we really cared about. If anything, I'd say Miles would follow whichever side Sawyer ends up on, as they seem to have become best friends/partners during the three years in the Dharma Initiative.

When all is said and done with this series, I have a feeling there's gonna be three categories of people:
A) They die by the series' end
B) They end up staying on the Island forever
C) They go back to the real world and live happily
I'd say, especially since he's not really a Candidate, either Miles dies or lives happily off the Island (With millions of dollars). Obviously I wish him the best, but with him and Frank being the only very minor characters in the grand scheme of things, I can definitely see them being killed off before the series' end, unfortunately.

You guys shock me  everyone demands immediate answers for mysteries so huge you know they will eventually be answered, but now everyone accepts as fact that he can just read thoughts of the dead, and not one question raised?
Well, that's the way his character has been set up. He can gather a kind of psychic impression of a person and what they were thinking around the time of their death simply by being close to their remains. That is in fact the very reason he was sent to the island, if you recall.
... I would like to add that I don't get why people view Nikki and Paulo as such a disaster. The whole "extras" don't speak (i.e. collect their union speaking fee) was getting to be more than a little weird; it was cool to hear from some other people on the island. Well, kinda. Their episodes were not that good, I admit.

Miles finding them was the second "shock" of the episode ,after Widmore of course :D

I'm not impressed...in a show that pays so much attention to detail, and everything has a purpose, I think that the Nikki/Paulo episode is going to mean a lot more in the end. I think this episode was merely calling our attention back to it so that it can be brought up later.

Well let's think about this one.
1. Miles is currently with team Jacob, at least he's camping with them.
2. Team Jacob wants to stay on the island, while team MiB wants to get off the island.
3. In the Nikki/Paulo episode, it was reiterated a few times that the diamonds have no value on the island.
4. Yet, Miles still felt the need to dig up the diamonds.
Sounds to me like Miles is going to switch sides. Otherwise, why would he care about the diamonds if he was going to stay on an island where they hold no value?

Ewww.. lol. I know, that was.. sick man. Sawyer scattered them over their bodies like confetti.. Miles would've had to.. um.. rummage :shifty: through rottin' flesh. EWWWW.
Wash your hands.
And to be honest, I think they'd have a lot to say besides the stuff about the diamonds. Like.. "What the heck... we were alive when they buried us."
Offtopic, I'd like to know what Lucy and Libby said as well. lol. Miles ears would've been buring all shades of red, I bet. :D:w00t:
