On my way to classes this morning, I was listening to perhaps my favorite song, "Hotel California" by the Eagles. A few lines struck me:

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink campaign on ice;
And she said, "We're all just prisoners here,
Of our own device."

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door;
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before.
"Relax," said the night man,
"We are programmed to receive;
You can check out anytime you like,
But you can never leave."

The mirrors on the ceiling could refer to the mirrors on Jacob's compass. The Losties/Others are prisoners, but they're prisoners because they made themselves prisoners. The last stanza speaks for itself.

Also, with this whole free will vs. destiny theme, I was musing over my old history notes and noticed one particular individual - Jean Cauvin (John Calvin), the founder of the Calvinists and the founder of predestination - God has chosen your destiny, and no matter what you do, you can't change it. Perhaps Jacob is representative of Calvin. Now watch his last name be Calvin! :D

Also, I am kind of responsible for this whole Jacob is bad idea, and I want to redeem myself. I agree with most on here who say that LOST is more philosophical, and there are numerous references to philosophers.

John Locke - No one can enforce a "true religion," because it will be corrupt.

Edmund Burke - Property belongs to the individual.

David Hume - Science has a relation to human nature.

Michael Faraday - Developed the theory of the electromagnetic field.

I think in last week's episode where Locke said that Jacob defending the island was nothing fits into the the philosopher's view that no one on earth can enforce a true religion. Therefore, we can assume that the Others/Island inhabitants blindly followed Jacob without knowing who he truly was, just "because he said so."

Any thoughts???

I doubt they intended any Eagles reference. There are thousands of songs that can relate to LOST in thousands of ways. But it's still a fun thing to do.

I like the relationship with these famous thinkers. You might add Shaekspeare's story "The tempest". I was totally surprised by the analogies with LOST.

Like I said, the Eagles reference was just coincidence. I am more concerned with John Calvin.
