I think JJ has a thing for the name Nadia. Sydney's sister's name in Alias is Nadia, and then Sayid's "love" (i guess you'd call her) was named Nadia. Same with the name Jack. Syd's father in Alias is named Jack, and one of the lead roles in lost, his name is Jack.

We have a Jack also in 24... and also in "Without a trace"... there are too many Jack on TV right now... writers need a little more fantasy in chosing names! :P

I thought about the same thing when I heard the name "Nadia"... JJ must like it! I wondered if it's really a Iraqi name anyway...

Ciau ciau!

aparently it is arabic,
NADYA (2) f
Usage: Arabic
Possibly means "the first" in Arabic, or it could be a variant of NADA.

Nadia means "the beginning" in Arabic. Interesting. Her other name, Noor ("Nobody calls me Noor, Sayid") means "light".

I think if it is purposeful it just means that Nadia was the beginning of Sayid's new life.

Nadia is a Slavic name. There are also versions of the name in other parts of Eastern Europe. There may be a similar name in Arabic, but Nadia as it is pronounced on television is Slavic (read Ukrainian, Russian etc.) and certainly not a Middle Eastern name. I am Ukrainian and know a lot of Nadias.

I think maybe it was used in Lost because it was a very Westernised name that still sounded exotic. It's for the same kind of reason a lot of main men have such run-of-the-mill names (ie Jack). Western audiences like characters to have names that are familiar to them. Kate, Claire, Charlie, Jack, Shannon - you get the picture. And they are aalmost never more than two syllables long.

Arabic is my native language. Nadia is an Arabic name. Two of its arabic meanings is the begining and the first. It also has another arabic meaning that has to do with dew, I don't remember exactily the dew meaning. In countries in South America, you will see children having arabic names because of their Arabic origins. Their grandfathers or grandmothers have immigrated to Brazil and Argentia, etc. from Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, etc. As a result, Arabic names in Latin America became more popular.

I think J.J. picked Nadia in Lost because of its obvious Arabic meaning and he could have picked up Nadia because there are Nadias in Latin countries because of the reason I mentioned above.

You know, there are names that are international. They have different meanings in different languages. Nadia could be one of them.

And btw, are you sure it's an arabic name?I'm pretty sure it's with slavic origin
As i've said before, sometimes it is used as the short form of Nadejda which in Bulgarian means "Hope" ;)

well, i suppose it's possible for a name to have different meanings and origins, no? I can some how especially imagine that for a name like Nadia, indeed it has this russian feel to it, but surely is also Arabic.
And i'm with nadia911 when it comes down to the arabic explanation of it.

Well Nadia is a popular bulgarian name too.the full name is Nadejda, which means "hope".

The russian version Nadia means "hope",too.
And her real name is Nur,what is arabic for "light".
Light is a common symbol for hope.So both names - the real one and the nickname - lead in the same direction. So,if character names are really important, that could be a clue.
