John Malkovich, Evangeline Lilly and Romain Duris shooting Afterwards in Canada this summer - A Canada / France Co-production
MONTREAL, April 13 /CNW Telbec/ - French filmmaker Gilles Bourdos (Inquiétudes, Disparus, Relâche) will direct the supernatural thriller Afterwards this summer in Montreal. Afterwards, which is co-produced by France's Fidélité Films and Canada's Christal Film Productions, will be entirely shot in English. It will star John Malkovich (The Libertine, Being John Malkovich), Romain Duris (Molière, L'Auberge espagnole) and Canadian Evangeline Lilly (Lost), who passed over several other enticing Hollywood offers to makes her feature film debut in Afterwards.
The screenplay, written by Gilles Bourdos and Michel Spinosa, is an adaptation of the French novel Et après... by Guillaume Musso. The shooting will last 45 days, will begin in New York City on June 4th, and will continue in Montreal as of July 7th. The Montreal portion of the shoot is expected to last about 25 days. Key crew members include Taiwanese cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bin (In the Mood for Love) and Montreal-based production designer Anne Pritchard.
Afterwards tells the story of Nathan (Romain Duris), a lawyer who is absorbed by his work and finds himself drifting away from his ex-wife (Evangeline Lilly) and daughter. He meets Joseph Kay (John Malkovich), a mysterious doctor who claims to be able to predict people's deaths.
Afterwards is produced by Marc Missonnier and Olivier Delbosc for Fidélité Films, and by Christian Larouche and Christian Gagné for Christal Films Productions. The film will be distributed in Canada by Christal Films, and will be released theatrically in 2008.

I wish her the best of luck
But I wonder if we'll be seeing less of her on Lost next season, since the movie will probably come out some time when they're filming season 4. She'll have to do the whole press tour thing. I hope they can work around her schedule.
Jenna
04-14-2007, 02:34 PM
^ No it won't. The filming only takes place in June and July which are when Lost is on hiatus.
I'm sure they can work around her schedule so she can promote it. She does press circuits and talkshows to promote Lost all the time and they just work it around her schedule.
Alevermor
04-14-2007, 08:51 PM
But promoting Lost, she's usually on the mainland for a few days. That covers LA and NY, and usually she does either-or. I do believe that press junkets for movies take a bit longer than that...a few weeks. I think, depending on how big the movie it. If it's a big movie, then they have to do an international press tour...but I don't think she'd do that...I hope.

It's great news for Evi!
^^I doubt that promoting would be a problem since Foxy was able to do We Are Marshall and that worked out fine. Like Jenna said most of the actual filming will be done during the hiatus anyway.
So no worries ;)

Forrest Whittaker too!Yay!Evi's part is meant to be pretty central to the plot so yay for Evi!

Malkovich, Lilly set for Afterwards
by: Patricia Bailey May 3, 2007 Print Share email this article
MONTREAL -- John Malkovich, Evangeline Lilly and Romain Duris are set to star in the fantasy thriller Afterwards, a Canada-France coproduction set to start June 4 in Montreal.
Helmed by French director/screenwriter Gilles Bourdos (Inquiétudes, Relâche), the $10-million international coproduction between Canada's Christal Films Productions and France's Fidelite Films recounts the tale of a lawyer (Duris) whose obsession with his work distances him from his wife (Lilly) and daughter. Malkovich plays a doctor who claims to have supernatural powers.
The project marks the feature film debut for Alberta-born Lilly, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role on Lost. Producer Christian Larouche believes both Lilly and Malkovich took on the project because of the script, cowritten by Bourdos and Michel Spinosa (the pair also collaborated on Inquiètudes). "The characters are simply wonderful. It's Lilly's film debut, so she wouldn't have taken it on unless she absolutely loved it. It's the kind of film which will get people in the theaters," says Larouche, who is also the president of Christal Films.
Though based on French writer Guillaume Musso's novel Et après..., the screenplay was written in English. "Gilles divides his time between Paris and New York. They were very comfortable writing it in English," explains Larouche.
Christal, which will distribute the film outside the U.S., provided 30% of the film's financing, but raised the cash without help from Telefilm Canada or SODEC. "We didn't need to go to the funding agencies. We used the tax credit. Foreign sales will complete the balance," says Larouche, adding that shooting in Montreal made economic sense for their French partner. "It's cheaper for them because of the tax credit. And we can make Montreal look like anywhere in the world."
Larouche is confident Afterwards will do well domestically: "English Canada is important for us. We think this film has excellent potential for market penetration." The producers hope a U.S. distributor will also come on board.
Taiwanese cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bin (In the Mood for Love) and Montreal-based production designer Anne Pritchard will also work on the film.
Christal plans a 2008 Canadian theatrical release for Afterwards. Half of the six-week shoot takes place in Montreal, following a stay in New York. Scenes will also be shot in New Mexico.

Fidelite lines up English-language pics
Films to star Lilly, Malkovich, Duris

CANNES -- After its English language debut with Francois Ozon's "Angel," French shingle Fidelite is prepping a series of English-language pics with the likes of "Black Book" star Carice Van Houten, "Lost's" Evangeline Lilly, John Malkovich and Romain Duris.
Company behind Emir Kusturica's in competition pic "Promise Me This" is about to go into production on French helmer Gilles Bourdos' E10 million ($13.5 million) "Afterwards."
Thriller will begin shooting in early June in New York, New Mexico and Montreal. Canada's Crystal Films is co-producing.
Duris plays a man who is warned by a mysterious third party that his days are numbered, leading him to take some radical decisions about what he is going to do with what is left of his life.
Pic is produced in association with Malkovich's shingle, Mr. Mudd.

Every time I read news about this movie, I get a little excited.
Anyway, I have a positive outlook that this movie will make it to the United States.
It doesn't sound like a $65 million movie (the common price tag for a movie these days) but it sounds very actor oriented and character driven.

She talked about her movie on Regis and Kelly today. She seems very excited about it and seems to adore John Malkovich.
She also said they have an American producer now (something they didn't have earlier). So that will make it even more likely to be released in the US theaters.
Evi also said she will have a few scenes where she speaks some French.

It is, because an article last month said they were looking for an American Producer.
Janine posted some news on Afterwards at E-L.net (http://www.evangeline-lilly.net/):
Today I come bearing some great new information about Evangeline's upcoming movie project Afterwards.
Evi plays the character of Claire who is the ex-wife of Nathan played by Romain Duris. Contrary to what Evangeline herself stated on Live with Regis and Kelly the script is completely in English and according to the production department there isn't a scene in French.
All of Evangeline's scenes will be shot in New Mexico, USA and Montreal, Canada.
I want to express a huge thanks to A-Anne and Christal Films (http://www.christalfilms.com/) for being so kind and passing on those news.

Governor Bill Richardson Announces Afterwards to be filmed in New Mexico
SANTA FE—Governor Bill Richardson today announced that the feature film, Afterwards, a Fidelite Films and Christal Films production, will be partially shot in New Mexico. Romain Duris, John Malkovich and Evangeline Lilly will star in the film.
Afterwards tells the story of Nathan, a recently divorced lawyer, who is shaken up after meeting a doctor who claims that he has the ability to sense when certain people are going to die. The doctor believes he is sent to help those people put their life in order before it’s too late.
Nathan comes to understand that the doctor believes he is going to die soon, and even though he doesn’t believe him, certain disconcerting events in his life start to make him think that his days are numbered.
The production will be shot in and around Albuquerque, Alamogordo, Jemez and Tularosa from June 15 - 29 and expects to hire approximately 70 local New Mexico crew members.
The film will be produced by Marc Missonnier and Olivier Delbosc. Gilles Bourdos will direct.
"This is another exciting example of the growth of the film industry in our state and the new job opportunities being offered to New Mexicans. We welcome John Malkovich and Evangeline Lilly, along with the rest of the cast and crew to our state" said Governor Bill Richardson.
Since Richardson took office, over 65 feature films and television series have shot in the state, adding over $1.1 billion dollars to New Mexico’s economy.

John Malkovich will predict the death of Pascale Bussières
MAXIME DEMERS
the Newspaper of Montreal
20-06-2007 | 11h46
Pascale Bussières will give the counterpart to John Malkovich and to Romain Duris in Afterwards, a psychological thriller which will be partly turned to Montreal this summer.
The Québécois actress will play in this film of the French Gilles Bourdos the part of Anna, a Russian immigrant in the United States.
Adapted of a novel of Guillaume Musso (And After..., run out with more than 300 000 specimens in France), Afterwards tells the history of a young new Yorkean lawyer (Romain Duris) disturbed by the meeting of a strange doctor (John Malkovich) who claims to be able to predict the death of the others. The character of Anna, a former friend of childhood of lawyer, will be one of these people whose doctor will predict eminent death.
"The character of Romain had lost sight of the fact Anna and by learning that the doctor had predicted his death, it will find it to try to protect it", explains Pascale Bussières, joined yesterday.
"I have ten days of turning and the majority of my scenes will be with Romain Duris. That is likely to be funny because I know Romain well. It is a friend. Moreover, when I announced to him that I had had the role, it said to me: that will be funny, I will destabilize you. But I believe that with its English (it is the first anglophone role of the French actor), it is more me which will be able to destabilize it...
"I also have during my nine days of turning, a scene or two with John Malkovich. That will be a little intimidating. It is a so intense actor, almost mystical... "
Pascale Bussières took down the role of Anna after having passed two hearings. The Québécois company Christal Films which coproduit the full-length film held so that at least a Québécois actress plays in film.
"One organized for the realizer of hearings with Québécois actresses. One saw some several and he loved Pascale much, underlines Christian Larouche, president de Christal Films.
Russian accent
For her role in film, the Québécois actress will have to tint her English of a light Russian accent.
"With my first hearing, I spoke with normal English, indicates the actress who already played until now in an English film half-dozen.
"Then they recalled me for the one second hearing by me specifying that they would like this time that I have a Russian accent. But they said that to me the day before, at 10 hours of hearing. I thus called in catastrophe a Russian coach, who gave me some councils. I made hearing, that did well.
"Then when the realizer recalled me, he said to me that I had the role but that there was a small problem of accent. The first nobody whom it had consulted had said to him that my accent sounded French, the second said to him that that sounded Italian and the third that that sounded Polish. It then asked to me whether I preferred that my character does not have an accent. I answered that not because for the composition of the character, I prefer that. That allows a greater implication in the character."
The turning of Afterwards, a production of $14 million, began in New York on last 6June and will move in Montreal at at the beginning of July, after a stopover in New Mexico. Five weeks of turning are envisaged in Montreal. The film should take the poster with the autumn 2008.

^^ Thanks for translating and posting the article, I saw it a few days ago on imdb.com but couldn’t figure out what it was saying
So its gonna have I theatrical release in Autumn 2008.....that’s a hell of a wait. Hopefully the trailer should be out a few months b4 then.
Actually come to think of it im glad that its getting released in the Autumn 2008 and not any earlier that year. I read somewhere ages ago that releasing a movie at different times of year can effect its popularity, box office success and chances of the movie or actors getting nominated for awards.
Movies released at the very beginning of the year (January, February, March) don't have good box office success (probably b/c everyone’s broke after xmas) and these months are normally resevered for movies that are not up to a high standard ( you know the ones that go straight to DVD or have limited cinema releases). So production companies release these earlier in the year so that they can concentrate more on promoting the movies that they know are going to be successful.
Releasing a movie later on in the year in particular at the end of Summer, Autumn and Winter is good move because-
1) The movie market is on fire at that time.- People are back from their vacations abroad so they are more likely to go to the cinema. They also have more money to burn at that time of year because its just b4 xmas.
2) The end of year is just before award season (which happens at the beginning of every the year) so having a movie that comes out a few months b4 that means it is more likely to get some recognition compared to a movie that was release 10 months ago, because how many people actually remember a movie that was released in February???
So that is why I am glad Afterwards is getting released when it is ( if the above article is correct) even if its a painfully looong wait for us. Obviously just because its getting released in the autumn doesn’t automatically mean its going to be a successful movie. It just means that more people ( fans, critics and award panel judges etc) may pay attention to it because its being released in a competitive period.

Hopefully that news means Kate is one of the first two flashbacks. Please let it be the opener.
i guess Jenna means that if she isn't on jail, it'll be FF to explain that... i guess she won't get the premiere.. but maybe 4x02. Besides, she'll definitely have a FB through the rest of the season

Film crew wraps up White Sands shoot
Alamogordo Daily News
Daily News Report
Article Launched: 06/29/2007 12:00:00 AM MDT
Filming in Alamogordo took place this week at White Sands National Monument. A French production company, bringing more than 70 crew members, was welcomed by officials from Otero County, the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce and the organizers of the 2008 White Sands International Film Festival according to a news release announcing the filming.
Shot over four days at White Sands National Monument, this film was supported through the efforts of the chamber of commerce and key members of the White Sands International Film Festival.
The news release noted both organizations are seeking to raise the profile of southern New Mexico as a prime location for the production of feature films.
Ed Carr, executive director of the chamber, offered assistance through the support of film liaison Jan Waffle, with extra support provided during the final days of shooting from David Gibbons, executive festival producer of the reshaped International Film Festival, and festival colleagues, the news release stated.
"The shooting of the movie 'Afterwards' this week at White Sands National Monument demonstrates again the attractiveness of Alamogordo and our area to film makers," Carr said in an official statement. "The cast and crew of around 100 provided a nice shot in the arm to many local businesses.
"With the movie 'Transformers' coming out next week, the movie 'Afterwards' hitting the screens in the near future and the upcoming White Sands International Film Festival, Alamogordo will be getting a lot more attention from the film industry."
Gibbons met Russell Smith, the film's U.S. producer, two days before final wrap. Smith said he appreciated the support provided by all the parties from Alamogordo.
"Film productions of this magnitude can have a positive affect not only upon the city of Alamogordo but also the whole of southern New Mexico," Gibbons said in the news release. "It is to the benefit of all those living in this region that these productions can have a positive affect in terms of economic as well as marketing impact."
Gibbons commended what he called the "very special relationship" built between the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce and White Sands International Film Festival, based upon the collaboration in supporting the objectives of bringing film production to southern New Mexico.
The international film festival is seeking the cooperation of production companies, such as the one behind this film, to return for screenings during the March 2008 event. It also hopes that key actors, directors and producers will also return to discuss the various processes and methodologies of today's filmmaking business during the festival's seminars for filmmakers. The film is scheduled for release in 2008.
The film is directed by Gilles Bourdos and stars Evangeline Lilly, John Malkovich and Romain Duris.

I know that IMDB is quite unreliable.
I wonder why they chose to change the name of her character for the film. I liked the name Mallory. It's pretty and a bit more unusual. Though it does remind me of the tv show Family Ties.

Playing a supporting character is a good move on her part for her first film. It will allow her to enjoy the experience without being expected to carry the movie (as leads generally do). She doesn't really need that extra worry and stress her first time out of the gate.
At least she has graduated from being an extra in films to having an actual supporting role. ;)

Hey guys, I finished reading Afterwards last night.
It was a little hard for me to read that book when I got a lot of things to do.
There had been no post in Evie's thread for a week since I wrote my post.
I'm a little disappointed that every fan of Evie is quiet... where is everyone? :(
Anyway, for the people who want to know about her role in the movie
here are the details (in case I put these in spoiler tag)
Nathan the successful lawyer meet Dr. Goodrich.
The doctor claims that he can sense some people who are going to die
and his job("messenger") is to help them finish their lives in the way they want...
At first Nathan doesn't believe the doctor's words,
but after witnessing some death that the doctor predicted,
he realizes that he had no other choice but to make no regrets in his life before he dies.
(There's a twist in the end and I think I'd better not to talk about it. :shifty:)
I think Evie's role is one of the victims... There is Candice who is a waitress at a bar.
She is described as blonde so I think she is Evie's character.
She raised a boy without the father of the baby after they had an one-night-stand.
Her dad had been in prison for 25(?) years because of the crime that he didn't commit,
and she had thought that her dad had abondoned her.
With the help of Dr. Goodrich(unknown to Candice and her dad),
they finally made up with each other and had lived together for 2 years.
Actually I can't help but thinking of Kate while I read this part of novel. ;)
Just from some daddy issues, the fact that she drive truck,
strong and stubborn character... I think Kate and Candice have a little common things.
(and I was kind of surprised when I found that the name of her baby boy was Josh :D)
Nathan wants to save her from her destined death and visits the bar.
They have some talks but before he could tell her about her death,
she gets a call that her dad was died of heart attack.
Nathan thinks that this incident proves the doctor's words wrong.
With some sympathy for her, he wants to give her some money.
She rejects the offer at first, but later accepts it when he doesn't give up.
When they goes to the bank, bank robbers come into the bank.
After some chaos, Candice gets gunshot with a bullet that a policeman shot. :(
This is the end of her story. At the very last pages of the book,
the fact that Josh will be raised by Candice's aunt.
I don't think Evie's roll is not that big but still, it was a great opportunity for her!
I really hope that I could watch this movie at theater in my country too. :lotsalove

Thanks for posting!!! :D But I think the movie has changed her character some. From what I've read about the movie, Evie's character's name was changed to Claire and she is the ex-wife of Nathan. And she's raising their son by herself. So after the doctor tells Nathan he's going to die, he tries to reconcile with Claire and their son. :D
So either way it sounds really good for Evie!!!

And she's raising their son by herself. So after the doctor tells Nathan he's going to die, he tries to reconcile with Claire and their son.
Wow that would be better! :hyper: When I started to read that book,
I thought Evie's character would be Nathan's wife. (in book, Mallory)
Since she lives in San Diego and Nathan lives in New York,
and she doesn't appear often until the second half of the book,
so I thought maybe her wife wouldn't be described as an important character.
(but now I realized that's impossible after reading the last part of the book :giggle:)
To write down about Mallory, or Claire ;) she is the love of Nathan's life.
They met each other when they were kids. His mom worked as a maid in her house.
Mallory is from a high-class family, and Nathan was so poor without his dad.
When they went to a picnic or something, Mallory fell into a lake and drowned.
Nathan went after her and saved her, but he didn't get out on his own.
He actually drowned to death but after some time, he came from the death.
This incident made their friendship turn into something deep and like... destiny.
(and this is something to do with the "messenger" ;))
As they grow up, their love for each other gets more sincere and deeper,
even though Mallory's parents didn't accept Nathan as their family member
they got married and had two kids, the girl Bonny and the boy Shaun.
They had had a happy marriage until their son died by accident.
After that, Nathan's obssession to make himself competent enough
to be accepted by parents-in-law is getting more intense,
and Mallory who loves to fight for the weak people in society and
who thinks love, family, peace, such values are more worthy than money or fame
couldn't take it anymore, and they broke up. But Nathan still loves her, so do Mallory.
After Nathan met Goodrich and understood what that meeting means,
he went to San Diego to take his daughter to spend his last days(well...) together.
Nathan and Mallory did had some talks but couldn't made up.
Nathan and Bonny spent some good times, and some things happen....
and because of that Nathan and Mallory meet together, and there's a twist
This story is really exciting and have such a good suspence.
And it made me think about how valuble this moment that I got now... :D
Ah, and this story would be changed for the movie of course

it's just that this lack of news let us kinda of sad...
anyway, thanks for posting what you read about Afterwards, I can't wait to see it, although, as Amanda said, I guess they've changed some stuff from the book storyline and I hope they really did, cause I wouldn't stand seeing her dying :( :( :(
Hi Carol! :waves: good to see all the Evie's fans here! :D

noup, there's no date set yet...
some say that maybe September of 2008.
aww Katharine I love the story I just wish that Evi's character didn't die... I know it's not Evi, but I wouldn't stand to watch that... btw she's already played a corpse in a movie so I guess that's enough for her LOL :giggle:

In the book it says than Nathan has a son but in the movie i think he has a daughter instead. In the offical statement it only mentioned Evi's character (ex-wife of Nathan) having a daughter. Plus i read somewhere (on another forum) that the production company for the movie were doing a casting call for young girls to play the daughter.
Also i think Evi's character is called Claire after all because on IMDB it says that a young actress called Sophi Knight has been cast to play "young Claire"....although i'm not to sure how reliable IMDB actually is.
Another bit of information about the movie from Lars Engstrom (taken from his myspace page)
"This summer I played a street evangelist who falls apart after his friend is accidentally killed in the film "Afterwards", starring John Malkovich and is currently in post-production."

Movie will be out in France October the 1st 2008.
.... Talking about downloads I was thinking torrent links.... but if there's any way to have it legally, I'll try to find it...;)
.... And Romain Duris is hot.... In case you haven't seen any of his movies, I highly recommand "L'Auberge Espagnole" et "Les Poupées Russes"... These are french movies but I'm pretty sure they can be found with english subtittles... and they're AWESOME!

According to IMDB the movie doesn't have an American distributor yet but it does have distributors for the following countries - Canada, France, Germany , Mexico and South Korea. All of these state that the movie is going to have a theatrical release.
Maybe the producers of the movie are waiting to see the response when it is released in other countries?. If it does well then it will probably get released in the U.S, if it doesn't then they may just release it on DVD or not release it at all.

Alexandre Desplat Signed For "Afterwards"
Mar 18, 2008, 1:29PM
French composer Alexandre Desplat, who was recently voted 'Composer of the Year' for the second year in a row by the International Film Music Critics Association, is doing the music for Afterwards, a drama starring John Malkovich, Evangeline Lilly and Reece Thompson. A co-production between France, Germany, Canada and the US, the film is directed by Gilles Bourdos, a French filmmaker for whom Desplat previously scored A Sight for Sore Eyes in 2003. Afterwards is based on a novel by Guillaume Musso about a lawyer who meets a doctor who claims that he can sense when certain people are about to die. The film is expected to premiere in October.
