Let's see if I can explain this rightfully.

You're right. Technically, they are Native American. Columbus dubbed the native settlers "Indians" 'cause he believed he'd stumbled upon a part of Asia when he discovered America. But an "Indian" is really someone from India. And "Native Americans" need to be called "American Indians" if you want to be geographically correct.
