News of another installment to Universal's The Mummy franchise has been floating around for some time.
IMDB lists the project as an Untitled Rick O'Connell Adventure (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0859163/)
Obviously Brendon Fraser is attached to the project, and at one point it was rumoured that Freddie Boath would return as Alex O'Connell. Steven Sommers was then reported saying that only Brendon Fraser's and Rachel Weisz's characters would return for the sequel.
Joe Johnston (Jurasic Park IV, Jurasic Park III, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids) was slated as the director, but new news indiactes that Universal is trying to attract Rob Cohen (XXX, Stealth, Daylight) to the project (http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=0&id=39463).
Not much in terms of story has been released, but, in December 2005, a review of a script written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar was about a Chinese mummy who wanted to take over the world with his army of accursed warriors se many years after The Mummy Returns, in 1940.
The film had a tentative release for July 2008.
The blockbuster global Mummy franchise takes a spellbinding turn as the action shifts to Asia for the next chapter in the adventure series, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O’Connell to combat the resurrected Han Emperor (Jet Li) in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick is joined in this all-new adventure by son Alex (newcomer Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and her brother, Jonathan (John Hannah). And this time, the O’Connells must stop a mummy awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse who threatens to plunge the world into his merciless, unending service.
Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have laid forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing adventurer Alex O’Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents.
As the monarch roars back to life, our heroes find his quest for world domination has only intensified over the millennia. Striding the Far East with unimaginable supernatural powers, the Emperor Mummy will rouse his legion as an unstoppable, otherworldly force...unless the O’Connells can stop him first. Now, in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the trademark thrills and visually spectacular action of the Mummy series will be redefined for a new generation.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is helmed by director Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, xXx) and written by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (Spider-Man 2, television’s Smallville). Reprising their roles as producers in the series are Bob Ducsay, Sean Daniel, Stephen Sommers and James Jacks.

Hey, here's the (hypothetical) mummy sequel with the Brenden Fraser character we were talking about in the Hannibal thread! Didn't know they were actually making one.
This could be cool. I like the Mummy Movies. Hopefully they skip a few years like they did between 1&2 so this isn't a movie about their child prodigy doing things that kids just can't do - again. Or from the sounds of it, the kid just won't be in it at all.
I was just watching The Mummy Returns recently and just figured out that Adawale is in it. I hadn't watched it since he appeared on LOST.

You know, I did the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago too and realised Adawale was in it! I love those movies, looking forward to this one too! (so long as Jonathan is in it! He's my fav character!)

Jonathan is one of my favourite comic relief characters in any film. He was a great part of The Mummy (I did find Brendan Fraser quite funny in the first), and was even better in The Mummy Returns.

It was hypothetical in my mind when I mentioned it. I had NO clue that this was happening until I saw the thread.

SCI FI Wire talked to Al Gough, who is co-writing the third "Mummy" film with partner Miles Millar for director Rob Cohen and Universal Pictures. Gough revealed that the story will involve the grown son of Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evie (Rachel Weisz). You'll be seeing a new mummy as well.
"We figured out a really good family story with Rick and Evie, and [their son] Alex is now grown up. So it's really interesting." Alex was played as a young boy in 2001's The Mummy Returns by Freddie Boath.
He added that Fraser and Weisz are in talks to return. They are expected to start shooting this summer for a summer 2008 release. Visit the link above for more of the interview.
There hasn't been any news about the guy who played the original Mummy returning mhmm would that work.

I could see it working -- but it would depend on a very well written script.

Variety reports that Brendan Fraser has closed a rich deal to return in The Mummy 3, but Rachel Weisz is not coming back.
Rob Cohen will direct the film, which is expected to begin production late in the summer. It will be set in China and will introduce Jet Li as a villain.
Universal is planning a July 18, 2008 release. The franchise has earned more than $830 million worldwide. The Mummy was released in 1999 and The Mummy Returns in 2001.
Weisz has has dropped out of talks to reprise her role. She has several other projects coming up, including The Brothers Bloom and Phillip Noyce's Outback drama Dirt Music, set to begin shooting in August.
The script is by "Smallville" creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who will do another pass that will factor in the absence of Weisz. Universal is holding up a greenlight pending a final rewrite, but a late summer start date is still expected.
:( I loved Rachel in second her death really surprised me and I was looking forward to seeing her in action in the third film. :bawl:
As for this new Mummy I'm not so sure IMO it would best to bring back the orginal not sure about this crazy Chinese Mummy. (Jet Li) :blank:

^^^Thanks.
I can officially say that Maria Bello is sexy (in OTHER movies), but she does not hold a candle to Ms. Rachel Weiz.
Also, Jet Li as a martial arts mummy?!:eh: I'll pass.

I'm not so certain about "just as good", but I am certain that the new installment will remain as entertaining. Rick O'Connel is a great character, whom Brendan Fraser has perfected in performance.
It would have also been more appealing had Stephen Sommers returned to helm the film. Im not sure how much creative input he'll have as solely a producer on the project.
It's good to see Aussie, Luke Ford in a major Universal picture. Especially after his major role in Kokoda.

Then you should be interested in the prequel's sequel too.
The Scorpion King is getting another installment.
The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian (2008)
I'm sceptical of that film though, Dwayne Johnson's part has been recast since he wasn't interested.
amberdawn, John Hannah is a great actor. I'm also pleased he's reprising the role of Jonathon. Fraser is always good. Especially in this, one of his niche roles, as Rick O'Connell. I'm looking forward to seeing Luke Ford pull off an older Alex.

Interesting.
Good to see they have gone with the same graphics for the logo. I would like to see more of an image for the visuals in the poster. Although the emblem here is nice.
Edit: The Mummy 4?
Maria Bello who is starring in the new Mummy Sequel, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor recently had an interview with MTV News where she confirmed that during the opening scene of the movie she fights an invisible mummy and she also says that she will return for Mummy 4.
http://spoilertv-movies.blogspot.com/2008/03/bello-fights-invisible-mummy-and.html
All sounds plausible. Although I disgree with Bello's "Amazon" remark for a 4th setting.

I stand corrected.
This film is a disappointment to The Mummy and The Mummy Returns.
Rob Cohen is no Steven Sommers.
Ill admit that the film does manage to reignite the flair of The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns(2001), but it takes its time to do so.
Unfortunately the set up (of the new Chinese 'Mummy') and re-introduction of existing characters takes far too long and is the weakest part of the script. As a result the film is slow to start and struggled to keep my interest. Brandon Fraser's older, Rick O'Connell just does not seem to match the role he perfected in the earlier films, whilst Maria Bello never quite reaches the same level as Rachel Weisz playing Evie.
The one star performer for the first part of the film is series newcomer Luke Ford, who does well portraying an older, more reckless, even more "Rick" like Alex, who has himself abandoned college to pursue a career in archaeology -- as if that wasn't implied in The Mummy Returns as he keenly tagged along with his parents to the Egyptian ruins.
Only once the cast travels to China and is reunited at Jonathan's (John Hannah) nightclub does the script feel more natural, the acting less two dimensional and forced, and the film really starts to embrace the same comedic spark of the originals.
The first major action sequence, a chase through downtown Shanghai in the midst of 1947 Chinese New Year celebrations almost plays homage to the action that has come before it and is the first instance where the film becomes fun and entertaining.
From that point on the film picks up and continues to draw parallels to scenes from Sommer's films, but this is not quite enough to allow the film to fully recover from the bland opening and poor script.
The CGI is no where near on par with the first films, which were considered ground breaking in the field. This time around its under developed, in your face and overused. Simply put, its a distraction.
Overall, I consider the film a let down. Definitely a wait for DVD release, dont rush to see it on the big screen.

No you most certainly did not miss that point. This film is set further along the timeline, post WWII. It is 1947. Time has progressed since The Mummy Returns. The characters have aged, although Rick and Evie do not appear to have physically, Alex is most definitely another 10-12 years older.

After seeing Rob Cohen's first attempt at directing a film for the successful Universal's The Mummy franchise, I have little hopes for anymore additions to the series. Yet Cohen is already musing over more sequels:
Mummy 4: On the potential room for more, Cohen says, "What I'm really happy about is that, by taking 'The Mummy' out of Egypt and putting it in China, by exploring a different approach to the quest for immortality, we now have it clear that the 'Mummy' franchise can travel. Now we know that if we want to go to Mexico or we want to go to Peru, we can because there's a cultural truth there of the mummies and these beautiful cultures. They have a lot of mummies. The Aztec culture had a lot of mummies and some of their mummy designs for the Foundation Army were taken from Mexican mummies that they have found. So I think that somehow that might make the basis of a good story."
