It's a new movie coming out sometime in 2007. It stars Eric Bana, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman.
I just finished the book by Philippa Gregory and its amazingly good. I can't wait for the movie to come out. My favorite character is the brother George and I can't wait to see the character brought to life on the big screen.
To sum it up quickly, it's basically about Anne Boleyn's little known sister, Mary, and how she was Henry VIII's mistress before Anne caught his attention. It also goes on ( in her perspective) about everything that happens after Anne captures the king's attention.

I saw the miniseries by the BBC of that book. It wasn't great but this one looks to be much better! What a cast! The only problem is that none of them are English...but then again Cate Blanchett did a fabulous job as Queen Elizabeth...so hopefully these guys will do just as well! It really is one of my favourite books of all time. It is such a powerful and sad story! I can't wait to see how this film version turns out! :w00t:

I'm looking forward to this movie...But I guess I don't really need to say why. Well, I will most probably read the book, but after I've seen the movie. There's always a bit of disapointment when you've read the book before because things aren't always like you imagined them.
I've seen promoting pictures, and it looks like a really good movie.

I hope so too:D I think I was in one of the first scenes. King Henry comes to visit the Boleyns and Anne(Natalie Portman) shows him around. I play one of the family friends who has come to see the king. It didn't really look like a very important scene so it might get cut....hope not:(
The set and the costumes looked fantastic btw, I think the movie is going to be great.

Yeah, as I mentioned earlier I've only seen some promo shots from the BBC version (and only a few promo shots for the movie version too) and I have to say costume wise- the movie is much better.
As my avatar I'm quite obsessed with Eric Bana, who's playing Henry so that fact that you were close to him and Natalie is exciting. Hopefully the scene isn't cut, but if it is, it might reappear as part of the deleted scenes on the dvd.
I'm so excited for this movie to come out. I keep hoping that they'll release more photos or a teaser trailer or something.

haha cool, I love the whole story of Henry VIII and how he chopped Anne's head off...
Btw, Eric Bana as King Henry VII? Talk about miscast. King Henry VII was supposed to be a very fat and unattractive man...

He was fat and unattractive when he was older, but he was supposedly very fit and dashing in his youth.

This is BS though. They never kissed on the lips. I've seen the red carpet footage live, and I can tell you this did not happen. Scarlett went to kiss Natalie on the cheek, and since Scarlett's smiling and because of the angle of the photo, it looks like they are about to lock lips but no. That's a nice photo nonetheless. :)

Oh, YAY!
I was so excited to see this thread here!!!
I am a HUGE Tudor history freak, thanks to my mother, and I just got into the Phillipa Gregory books about six months ago. "The Other Boleyn Girl" is really good, but some of her others are great, too. If you enjoyed TOBG, try "The Boleyn Inheritance", also by PG. This story begins after Jane Seymour (who was after Anne Boleyn), and chronicles Henry's marriages to Anne of Cleves and Catherine Howard. What is interesting about these two marriages is that he married AofC sight unseen (except for a Hans Holbein portrait), and their marriage was brief. Katherine Howard was very young and vivacious. Anyway, you guys might like it. I also thought "The Constant Princess" was interesting, which is about Henry's first wife, Katherine of Aragon.
Also, if you enjoy the movie of TOBG, check out Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, starring Cate Blanchett as Elizabeth I (who was Henry's daughter with Anne Boleyn).
Can't wait to see TOBG movie!

I just read a review that totally turned me off.
I'm not one to usually go only by the critics' opinion (see my list of favourite movies ), and I will still see it. What really made me think is the fact that the critic was one of my favourites, so I usually agree with him. :p
It's in portuguese, and on a publication, so I don't have a link. What it said, though, was that the acting was terrible, especially from Scarlet's part, and that it was a pretty tongue-in-cheek interpretation of a cheesy medieval tale.
I really hope the actual movie can prove him wrong. :p I don't like Scarlet at all, but I am very fond of Natalie Portmand and especially Eric Bana. :D

^It's Scarlett. ;)
Btw, the latest variety review says the opposite. That Natalie has the flashier role and the sharpest lines, but that at the end of the day, Scarlett's quieter Mary comes through as the pic's emotional center.
So yeah, movie critics are subjective by definition. Different strokes for different folks. But judging from the clips, the acting on both Scarlett and Natalie's parts looks solid to me.
I have quite high expectations for this movie, although I know they probably won't be fulfilled, I am sure the movie is way decent. Scarlett and Natalie are definitely two of the best actresses of their generation out there.

I really hope you're right, even though I read two other reviews today on portuguese papers, saying exactly what the first one I read said: poor acting, overly done, medieval chick-flick. Blah. I hate it when critics put it like this, it really turns me off. :p
There's a good side on this whole thing, though; it's bringing my expectations to such a low level, that I'm pretty sure it will be better than I thought, one way or another. ;)

Well, there are more negative reviews than positive ones about TOBG out there. There have only been like 5 reviews so far from valid critics and 3 of them were not so good. I'm trying not to get my hopes up anymore but really that trailer blew me away when I saw it the first time, and the clips show some solid acting. But I guess we'll have to see the whole movie.

So I saw the movie last night and I really liked it. Since I don't want to give anything away, the rest of the post will be in spoilers and since I'm in a bit of a hurry I'll keep it short. First off, the book differs from the movie in a lot of ways, but I still found the movie enjoyable. Even though I knew it was going to happen, it was still upsetting to see George's part cut drastically. But when he is on screen its enjoyable to watch ;). I will say that if they added some of his very witty dialogues, audience members who had not read the books would love him completely and care for him much more than they might have. The execution scenes make you feel for the characters, definitely. George's execution is heartbreaking and in Ann's you can see her utter terror and her ability to control it for the most part, which is also heartbreaking.
Some things that I'll nitpick about are:
1) they skip years in this movie like its seconds. (Which is confusing to people unfamiliar to the story)
2) Mary's husband, William Carey just disappears, with no explanation to the audience. So of course its confusing when William Stafford comes along and is telling Mary that he has money and they should go away with each other.
3) Mary's first born is a son which is never seen again after Ann makes Henry send them away after Mary's given birth.
4) Actually, as Mary is in labor, Ann makes Henry promise that he'll never speak to Mary again and will get away from the queen and such. So when the midwife comes out and goes "its a boy" Henry, due to his promise to Ann, just walks away.
5) Ann is given some nice qualities. Sure she's conniving in the movie but its nothing compared to the book.
Thats what I can remember currently, but no matter what I said, the movie is still very good and I encourage you all to see it! I know I will be seeing it a second time!

Just seen it. The film was better than I expected. Natalie Portman as Anne Boleyn certainly has the flashier role but objectively Scarlett Johansson comes through as the emotional centre and heart of the picture as Mary Boleyn. Her self-restraint, expressions and mannerisms and wise behaviour are right on and well-acted. Natalie Portman gets better in the second half of the film when she starts getting desperate. I don't think it was overacted at all. Although I do agree that it moved a little fast at times and with the consensus that it's more of a soap opera than a historical drama, I still quite enjoyed it. Is it a masterpiece? NO. But it is definitely entertaining. And I really loved the costumes, photography and musical score.

I saw this last month and I'm still torn about it. I read the book before and loved it! So obviously I had high expectations of the movie. I think that if you just watch the movie, and don't think of the book then it is a great movie. Natalie Portman blew me away (again!) and Scarlett Johansson was really good as well. I didn't particularly like Eric Bana as Henry though, I just didn't think he was the best actor to play him.
However if you do compare it to the book (even though I tried not to) it's not so good. They've changed so much, adding stuff in, and taking stuff out. I loved William Carey in the book so I was really disappointed with him in the movie.
The end scene was fantastic though! Beautifully done, and very heartbreaking.

I've wanted to The Other Boleyn Girl since I first saw a trailer for it, but after it came out, I kept hearing from my dad that it wasn't supposed to be that good. I wasn't able to see it also because it wasn't playing anywhere around here. But last night, I went to a poetry reading that was right next to the indie theater where TOBG was playing so one of my friends and I went and saw it. We both enjoyed it, although it did jump around a lot. But not a bad movie. I also didn't care for Eric Bana, but whatever. I did like Natalie, Scarlett, and Jim though. :)

In light of Eric Bana playing Henry- I loved it (but I'm biased as well-I love the man!). I just think they should have added more for him to do instead of having sex and being angry. It might have changed audience's opinion of him.
