who's a jordan fan around here?

That man can't die now! How many years have we been reading these books? We're on the LAST ONE for gods sake (since I'm assuming he's not going to try and pull of our last book into two 'volumes' anymore). Has he at least written an outline and stuffed it away so that Harriet could publish it if he doesn't finish?

Well, he shouldn't die just because. :p

But I hear ya, it will suck hardcore if we went through the millions of books (well ok, 11  ) just to be left...hanging. :D

And I haven't even read the newest one yet. *sigh* Must get me to a bookstore, and soon!

I'm actually gonna go and pick it up tomorrow! :w00t: It's been out for a little while so I'm hoping I can grab it at a decent price. If I dont watch myself I can waste a lot of money on hardcovers. :D

Wow, you're only on 5? Where do you live?

I bought the new one today!! So don't expect to hear from me for the next couple of days, hee! :D

Yeah--he's got amyloidosis, a blood disease. It's very sad--

Important note from Robert Jordan: March 25, 2006,
I have been diagnosed with amyloidosis. That is a rare blood disease which affects only 8 people out of a million each year, and those 8 per million are divided among 22 distinct forms of amyloidosis. They are distinct enough that while some have no treatment at all, for the others, the treatment that works on one will have no effect whatsoever on any of the rest. An amyloid is a misshapen or misfolded protein that can be produced by various parts of the body and which may deposit in other parts of the body (nerves or organs) with varying effects. (As a small oddity, amyloids are associated with a wide list of diseases ranging from carpal tunnel syndrome to Alzheimer's. There's no current evidence of cause and effect, and none of these is considered any form of amyloidosis, but the amyloids are always there. So it is entirely possible that research on amyloids may one day lead to cures for Alzheimer's and the Lord knows what else. I've offered to be a literary poster boy for the Mayo Amyloidosis Program, and the May PR Department, at least, seems very interested. Plus, I've discovered a number of fans in various positions at the clinic, so maybe they'll help out.)

Now in my case, what I have is primary amyloidosis with cardiomyapathy. That means that some (only about 5% at present) of my bone marrow is producing amyloids which are depositing in the wall of my heart, causing it to thicken and stiffen. Untreated, it would eventually make my heart unable to function any longer and I would have a median life expectancy of one year from diagnosis. Fortunately, I am set up for treatment, which expands my median life expectancy to four years. This does NOT mean I have four years to live. For those who've forgotten their freshman or pre-freshman (high school or junior high) math, a median means half the numbers fall above that value and half fall below. It is NOT an average.

In any case, I intend to live considerably longer than that. Everybody knows or has heard of someone who was told they had five years to live, only that was twenty years ago and here they guy is, still around and kicking. I mean to beat him. I sat down and figured out how long it would take me to write all of the books I currently have in mind, without adding anything new and without trying rush anything. The figure I came up with was thirty years. Now, I'm fifty-seven, so anyone my age hoping for another thirty years is asking for a fair bit, but I don't care. That is my minimum goal. I am going to finish those books, all of them, and that is that.

My treatment starts in about 2 weeks at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where they have seen and treated more cases like mine than anywhere else in the US. Basically, it boils down to this. They will harvest a good quantity of my bone marrow stem cells from my blood. These aren't the stem cells that have Bush and Cheney in a swivet; they can only grow into bone marrow, and only into my bone marrow at that. Then will follow two days of intense chemotherapy to kill off all of my bone marrow, since there is no way at present to target just the misbehaving 5%. Once this is done, they will re-implant my bmsc to begin rebuilding my bone marrow and immune system, which will of course go south with the bone marrow. Depending on how long it takes me to recuperate sufficiently, 6 to 8 weeks after checking in, I can come home. I will have a fifty-fifty chance of some good result (25% chance of remission; 25% chance of some reduction in amyloid production), a 35-40% chance of no result, and a 10-15% chance of fatality. Believe me, that's a Hell of a lot better than staring down the barrel of a one-year median. If I get less than full remission, my doctor already, she says, has several therapies in mind, though I suspect we will heading into experimental territory. If that is where this takes me, however, so be it. I have thirty more years worth of books to write even if I can keep from thinking of any more, and I don't intend to let this thing get in my way.

Wow, you're only on 5? Where do you live?

Hey Lost Mirage, thanks for the Jordan's text. I live in Belgrade, Serbia - country with many ex names, Yugoslavia as most known. I have a great discount with local publisher that works with Robert Jordan and George RR Martin books, and I was really surprised to find out how late they are with Jordan's books. But then I don't like to mix english and serbian books in series, and original books are usually 3 times more expensive, so I decided to wait.
I really like his positive attitude and hope it will work well for him

yah hopefully he'll make it.

God, if you have any first edition or autographed Jordan books; hold onto them! They guy's still alive and the prices on ebay are skyrocketing each day. Still can't believe I don't have an autographed one...it's a shame! I even lived in Charleston for a while....

The only autographed book I have is Anne Rice's Servant of the Bones. :)

It would be very sad if he died now indeed. Not only because we wont get to read his last book, but because I feel he as an author deserves to complete this story that has taken him so long to tell. From what I understand though, he is currently in the process of getting as much of the skeleton of the last book done as possible, so even if the unfortunate happens we will at least get to read the end of his series in some form.

Really awesome the positive way he is handling this though, I truly hope he manages to pull through it and write lots more.

well yes it would be a shame for him; i mean this is they guy's life's work. I know he's done other stuff, but these are THE Robert Jordan books....
Unfortunately though WithTheDawn, even if he finished this one I seriously doubt he'll get much more done....Things keep happening to my favorite authors lol i'm cursed.

i need an autographed Rice book...i have lots of first editions but no signed....still can't believe she wrote that new book *shivers* i find it funny though that at bookstores, it's always next to her porn books.

I read "The Eye of the World" in two days and I'm hooked. :D went to the book store yesterday to pick up the 2nd and the 3rd. Sometimes I find his descriptions weird and some pieces of it aren't that interesting .. but overall I really liked the first one. I'm on page 70 of the 2nd, and it looks promising.
Only, didn't he rip off a lot? Lan reminds me of Aragorn, the Two Rivers of LOTR's in the beginning, the Fades of Nazgul, etc ... not that it really bothers me or anything. Lan's one of my favorite characters (although there's a romance build-up with him and Nynaeve in tEotW and I don't like her very much), and so is Rand. I liked Elayne as well, even if she was only present for a short time.

Well all fantasy begins as a bit of a rip off from Tolkien - but don't worry, Jordan really turns it all into a world of his own making.

^thats true...The more you read the more you realise it's not a LOTR clone...
Jordan's series has such depth as it progresses that it's hard not to love. The latest book in the series for instance was amazing:faint::p
And you liked Elayne....:eh:..sure she seems nice at first but she's EVIL!!..well not really i just don't like her:shifty::giggle:

lol well I guess she's not exactly one of my favorite.

The one that I hate is Perrin. Especially in this last book; god he got on my nerves.

I'm a Matt fan myself. And Moiraine and Aveinndha (sp? sorry I'm half awake lol)

Ahh Matt is the coolest no doubt.Personally I dont like Cadsuane..the :censored::p.Ah Perrin is ok...if a bit obsessive:eh:. I also like Thom. Moiraine I like too...And Nynaeve is fairly bearable when she isn't yanking on her braid...lol.

Oh yah Thom! I like Thom.

BAD NEWS!

The guys who runs dragonmount just recently had lunch with Jordan and Harriet. Over the several hour lunch - Jordan told them the whole story. I think we can all guess what this means.

He's also not letting anyone take pictures of him anymore - he says anyone who's had family who's died of a prolonged cancer, knows how they look in the last few months.

Also, his last counts were skyrocketing.

Read the 2nd book as well now. and started on the third... page 100. All Perrin's POV.:blank: I'm not that interested in him. I hope he doesn't get all the POV's of the book.
Rand's still my favorite character, but he IS frustrating and annoying at times. I really really hope he doesn't go mad an die! I like Nynaeve a lot more now, but not Min. For some weird reason I really like Selene/Lanfear :D even though she is completely evil.
Well, I don't hate Elayne yet, but I'm guessing that I'll have to read all the books first... it's possible that I'll say when I finish the 3rd book that I can't stand Rand and Lan etc anymore. :p
And Ingtar was a Darkfriend! :shifty: I loved him.
I don't think he really ripped off Tolkien anymore. And I have to say, I like WoT a lot better than I ever liked LOTR. Movies = I loved, but I never got into the books, except for the third one.
George RR Martin and his Song of Ice and Fire are still my fave's though... but WoT's becoming a close second.

Yep..Rand is cool:cool:..You'll always love LAn..anything else isn't possible:p
You dont like perrins POV....I think there ok in book 3...have you had your Mat POV in book 3 yet?Thats one of the best:)
Ingtar..possibly the nicest darkfriend ever!!!
I prefer WOT compared to LOTR too.

Sadly, Robert Jordan passed away Sunday afternoon at 2:45 PM.

I've been a fan of WoT since I was a freshman in high school. I began lagging behind a lot after Book 8, not because of a disinterest in the series rather my reading habits as a whole unfortunately just became more sparse. Eerily, just last week I made a commitment to get caught up with the series in anticipation of the final novel, and have been reading every since. I've been so out of the loop I didn't even realize he was ill, so I was quite shocked at this news.

RIP Robert Jordan. Yours is the first fantasy series I ever got into, and still my favorite.

Regarding the fate of the 12th book, I have this quote from Wotmania:
Beyond expressions of sadness at Jordan's passing, I have no doubt the most frequent question/concern will be, "What happens to WoT?"

I talked with Jason about this. He said that Jordan has been dictating outlines and plot lines and everything else related to the final book. He used the phrase "army of writers" to talk about the people that were converting those tapes into written form.

It would appear that the final book will still be published, I'm sure details regarding that will work themselves out. So please be patient (as challenging as that might be), and for now let's focus on Jordan's life, writing, and the joy he brought to us.
I find it quite admirable that even when battling such a terrible illness, he didn't let it completely take over his life's work and still managed progress in his craft in the best ways he could to ensure that his story would be completed.

Yea the man was amazing..WOt was his life's work and it's a shame he couldn't have competed it himself..however his legacy will live on:(.
Many people disliked the slow pace of books9-10...but Jordan showed with book 11(arguably the best in the series) that the WOt was still spinning..a true legend..he will be missed

I was just getting ready to come post that.

I can't believe he's dead. It's so sad!
He's being burried wednesday in charleston. That's only an hour and half away from me but I don't think I'd make it with class...
That's another reason I've always liked him - Charleston always been kind of my second home; actually I used to live there.... and you always have to like a hometown boy :)

Bet it'll be a beautiful service.

Its gonna be pretty emotional when the final novel comes out (I have no doubt, no matter how much time it takes, that his memory will be honored and the story will indeed be completed as close to his vision as humanly possible), as I'm sure there will be quite the dedication to him within its pages.

Can't believe he died! :( It's a bit weird, reading his books now...

I'm on the last 150 pages of book 3, and I loove Mat now :D way more than in the first two books. Perrin's POV's are okay now. I guess I just had to get used to them. Same for Egwene's... but Perrin's and Mat's are just a tad more interesting.
Min, Elayne, Egwene, Selene/Lanfear... Rand sure has a fanbase. :blank: I feel so sorry for him. He's changed so much already starting from the first book, makes me wonder how he'll end up. Imagine wondering if you're going mad already every single day. :eh:
I looove the Aiel too. Still not hating Elayne. :p
What's everyone's top 5 characters? Most liked and most hated?

I just came at the part where Rand and Elayne kiss for the first time (in book 4). I was still recovering from the fact that he said he liked Egwene as a sister and the other way around. :blank: Ah, well.
Is it me, or is the 4th book funnier than the first three? Well the first 100+ pages anyway. Not the battle and all... but Mat's even more hilarious than before and the part where Min is told that she has to wear make-up and put curls in her hair ... :rotflol: "Oh, NO!" I could totally picture her. Moiraine's dry humor is more used now too. I like her more and more. The part where - I forgot her name - a girl I think named Bearlain or something went to Rand's room cracked me up too. Bowing, only to undress even more. :rotflol: Poor Rand. :D

Perrin got himself a girlfriend. I don't like her. :shifty:

I like that Rand and Lan seem closer now. I'm just glad that Rand's more in the book now. But I read a couple of "which character do you hate the most?" topics on WoT forums and he rates pretty high. I don't want to start disliking him.

I looove Lanfear. :giggle: She's the best villain so far as I've read. :)

hmmm/.....my post from last night apparenlty didn't make it to the board.

Okay well...lol I guess I won't give away some things relationshipwise with all sorts of people to you.

My favorite:
Matt
Avienha
Moiraine
Logain ( i know he's sorta bad but...)
Lanfear's kind of interesting to and we all know she's coming back.... still feels kinda weird talking about what will happen and how we think it'll end with him being gone...
and Thom!!!

BTW: 8:15 sharp eastern standard - the world gives a toast to Jordan/James Olivery Rigney, so join in!

As for the best villain..lanfear's good ..but I prefer ..well since you havent got that far i wont spoil..but he's complete psycho..:w00t:

Is book 10 really as bad as they say it is? It's ranked 1,5 stars on Amazon. :eh:

I almost bought book 5 in Dutch today, cause it's my first language, but just reading the first page made me shudder... It's like when I start reading books in English, I can't read them translated. I had the same with HP.

I really, really can't stand Perrin's "falcon". When they go into the Ways she acts like such a bitch, it drives me insane. And Elaida! Eeeevil.

Ooh, and the 'False Dragon' escaped. Msomething Thain. Or well, got broken out by Black Ajah, probably. Liandrin and co. It's a good thing my 3-month-vacation still isn't over. Lots of free time to read on. :D which I'm going to do now.

Book five is almost done now. :D still 200 pages or something. I like that Rand and Moiraine are starting to respect each other more, if you can call it that. Moiraine is becoming one of my fave's.
The fight with Aiel fighting the Shaido, Mat being a leader and killing Couladin, Rand using the power,... pure awesomness:p Right up until where he almost died. :blank:

I loove the Forsaken. Sometimes villains are just pathetic, but not them. Lanfear and Moghedien scare me the most, and Rahvin! although Morgase finally figured it out and managed to run. and the other one who does all those creepy things to his victims... forgot the name, but not Sammael, maybe something with an S. Ah, they're all insanely evil.

I don't like Elayne all that much anymore. Her crush on Thom? Ick. And she's too controlled all the time. Not that she really bothers me... I just like the POV's from Rand, Mat, Egwene (although irritating sometimes) and Min a lot more.

Rand had sex with Aviendha! I was like :eh: but I sure like her a lot more than Elayne. Then again, he's Rand, he'll probably end up with Min, Elayne and Aviendha as his wives. :p

I  the Maiden of the Spear.

So far I like book 1 and 4 the best, but this one is great too. I'll probably know when I finish it. :)

chelseafan
09-30-2007, 07:20 PM

Hmm. The Forsaken are not that scary anymore. Now Moghedien's just a pet who can't do anything, and now that I'm reading their POV's it takes away some of the 'mystery' around them.

Moiraine died!! :eh: Damn. It was kind of foreshadowed a lot, but still... :shifty:

Faile really is an acquired taste. It helps to understand her when you understand the way Saldaeaen culture is. I mean, it doesn't make her any less wacky from my point of view, but I at least learned to understand she wasn't going out of her way to be a witch, the women there are just raised that way, very strong and more stubborn than most in Jordan's world. In fact why Faile tests Perrin so particularly bad is actually explained eventually, but I'll let you read. :)

The females are part of what I love about the series; women have VERY prominent roles. Its not just the cliched maiden in distress characters either, plenty of very strong willed, and VERY opinionated female characters. Whenever I think a any certain female is being particularly bitchy, I try to look at it from another view and say to myself, "Now if this were a typical male character doing this, would I instead be seeing this behavior as badass?" A lot of times I find the answer is yes, and its made me respect the female characters more, even the really overbearing ones like Faile and Nynaeve. Funny thing is that when I first started the series this aspect annoyed me. A lot. Not that women had big roles but that they acted the way they did. It took me some time before I realized it was because I wasn't used to reading women portrayed in this way as opposed a whole slew of stories where the females, even the important ones, often subservient to the males in one form or another. When I put that together I realized how much of a double-standard that was and came to appreciate the female characters not to mention respect Jordan more for making a woman more than just some prop for the male characters to save.

I finished Winter's Heart, but I'm broke till tomorrow so I'll have to wait to buy 10 and 11.
I'm really starting to love Mat. He's gotten a lot more mature since the first two-three books. I especially love him in what was it, book 7 I think, when he's sneaking about Ebou Dar's palace to avoid Tylin. Hilarious! :D Especially when he blows up at Elayne and tells her about how Tylin cut off his clothes to have sex with him. :rotflol:

Rand has gotten scaaaary. It truly showed how hard he's become when Min tells him that she didn't feel any anger or fear when he was killing an Asha'man betrayer and that he casually responds that he wasn't angry, 'the man just needed killing'.
Well, Cadsuane'll take care of that. :) If she teaches him how to laugh and cry again.

I hate Sevannah. Just when I think she's gone for a while she goes and kidnaps Faile and Morgase.

Egwene is the Amirlyn! :w00t: I love how she tricks the other Aes Sedai. Who would've thought this when they began reading the books? :p

Dashiva was a Forsaken. :blank: I used to love Lanfear, but her new body and everything new just isn't all that anymore... She's weaker now.

No one's posted in here in a while, but I'm bringing this thread back to life! :)

I got The Eye of the World a few years ago for my birthday but I stuck it on a bookshelf and forgot about it until about a week ago when I discovered I've been missing out on a great story! I'm really enjoying it..it's sort of like LOTR, but then it's not. I have about a hundred pages left to go and I already have the second book waiting for me as soon as I finish. :D I wish I wasn't so busy so I could just sit down and read for a few hours straight. It's one of those books that you don't want to put down.

When I went to the bookstore the other day to pick up the second book there were 10 books plus a prequel, but from what I read on here there are 11? And did the 12th one ever come out?

DarkRockGirl990
03-31-2008, 09:01 AM
The 11th is the last one to come out - and the last book Robert Jordan ever wrote.

The 12 was meant to be the final Wheel of Time book, but since Robert Jordan died in September, it is going to be finished by Brian Sanderson, and is scheduled to come out in the fall of next year. Jordan (or James Oliver Ridgney, as the case may be) told Harriet his plan for the story, had extensive notes, and reportedly wrote a fairly detailed account of the ending - so the story will end as he planned it, but will just be described in Sanderson's way. The final one is called A Memory of Light.

:( I still can't believe he died.....
