I've never been to the Broadway but I've seen Musicals here in Germany: "Starlight Express", "Aida" and "Beauty and the Beast". They were all great. I really want to see "The Lion King" but it is showing in Hamburg in the north of Germany and as I live in the west of Germany I would have to go on a short trip then. But I'm definitely going to go in the future.

Thanks. :) I have no art programs at all on my computer, but my Secret Santa (clem_ross) made this one for me. And I absolutely love What Is This Feeling, Popular, Dancing Through Life, I'm Not That Girl, Defying Gravity, Thank Goodness, As Long As You're Mine, No Good Deed, For Good, and the Finale.

(I have trouble narrowing things down.)

HeartsAndMinds, I'm about to buy tickets to see Rent in March. :boogie:

The musicals I've seen on Broadway are:
Phantom of the Opera (LOVE IT!)
Avenue Q (hilarious)

This past year my arts department went to see Wicked at the Providence theatre (not broadway) but I didn't go because they saw it on a wednesday or thursday night and we still had school the next day, plus I was a little short on cash then. But my friends and some employees I work with saw it and they all say it is very very very good. I'm jealous I haven't seen it.
What I really want to see is Jesus Christ Superstar (the musical I'm obsessed with at the moment) but thats not going to happen until they revive it.

I am in love with Broadway. I'm such a theater geek. :dance2:

I saw The Phantom of the Opera twice. Once with my mom and once on a school trip.

I saw Wicked this February and I think it's my favourite show so far.

I saw Cats when I was much younger and one of the Cats came off the stage and scratched me! :giggle:

I saw Rent in Philadelphia. It's the Broadway production and cast, they just travel sometimes.

And this past April I saw Beauty and the Beast. I thought it was good, but kind of corny.

I am in love with Wicked, it's quite scary how much it has taken over my life, and I've only seen it once. I had plans to see it in June but my Mother spoiled that three days before I left. *is still bitter* :P

Mystical I saw Wicked in London and Kerry Ellis (Elphaba) is amazing! I hope you get to see it with her in.

Lets see favourite musicals. Wicked, Rent, Chicago, Avenue Q, tick..tick...BOOM!, We Will Rock You, Spring Awakening, Hairspray. Only seen Wicked unfortunatly as I don't live close to London.

I have the original soundtrack with Kristin Chenowith and Idina Menzel - wish I'd been able to see it when they were in it or even when Idina was in the London production.

Just as long as i see it soon - I play the score way too much on the piano as it is :giggle:

0HeartsAndMinds0

I'd have loved to have seen Idina, but no one would go with me.

For years I've wanted to see Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, but now Wicked's top of my list.

It'll have to go a long way to beat Chicago (seen twice, in NI and on Broadway) and Miss Saigon (it made me cry).

I wish I could say I've seen more musicals, but no good ones ever come near me. We need a UK touring production of Wicked :p

I can't wait - just over a week now - and I've been looking forward to it even more since i saw her sing The Wizard and I on Loose Women at Halloween :giggle: She was really good, just as good if not better than the recording I have, which is Idina Menzel.

Mystical
11-25-2007, 03:30 PM
I'll wait and see after I've seen the whole thing - I still can't imagine anyone but Idina and Kristin singing Defying Gravity, so I'm gonna judge Kerry on the whole performance, not just the one song :giggle:

Do you know who's playing Glinda?

0HeartsAndMinds0
11-26-2007, 02:01 PM
I see. Well I thought exactly the same, but believe me she owns that role!

It'll be Dianne Pilkington or Sarah Earnshaw whose the understudy, but Dianne doesn't usually miss shows so you'll most likely get her.

Mystical
12-05-2007, 03:58 PM
Well, I saw it last night, and it was amazing!! :D

First off, Dianne wasn't there, we got Sarah - and her voice really grated on me by the end. She wasn't bad though, but Kristin Chenowith certainly ang Glinda better.

Kerry Ellis, on the other hand, was aboslutely fantastic, every single song - she made Defying Gravity as good as Idina on the recording, and I loved As Long As You're Mine. Some of the girls I was with even cried at For Good.

The set design was brilliant too, the only thing i can complain about is the price of the food I bought  My own fault for not going to Tescos beside the first Tube station I was in. :giggle:

I had a great night though, although i think i still prefer the Broadway cast recording - Kerry on her own is great, the chorus not so good.

LovelyLight
12-05-2007, 05:01 PM

Mystical
12-06-2007, 12:17 PM
You might've had the stand-in. Kerry's been in the West End production ever since Idina Menzel stepped down, as far as I know, and she finished her run at New Year.

Idina is better, imo, but Kerry's pretty damn good too - if you could combine traits of them both, Elphaba would be pretty much perfect.

Her and Kerry Ellis would be great together, I could watch Kerry or Idina (seen some on Youtube) as Elphaba.

I love musicals in general, and my high school is doing the play Oklahoma! for our fundraiser this year. I'm playing Kate.

Got a trip to Broadway with my college Drama society in January. Going to see Wicked, Hairspray, The Phantom of the Opera, and me and 3 friends are seeing Rent also. I've seen Wicked in London before, and on Broadway when I was there in 2004. Can't wait!

*is jealous* :p I'm going back to London in the summer, so I'll get to see another show. Don't know which one though - anyone know if Rent's on in London still?

Looks like everyone has trips planned! Me and a few friends want to go back to see Wicked again in February some time, and I'd love to see We Will Rock You when I'm down, but tickets for two shows would be pretty pricey so I'll have to wait and see.

anyone know if Rent's on in London still?

Be warned it's Rent "Remixed" - a love or hate thing, there really is no in between. Mind you I haven't seen it so I can't pass judgement, a friend of mine has and she absolutely loved it, but I know many people cannot stand it.

Maybe not then..........I'll stick to Les Mis or Phantom instead, or maybe just go and see Wicked again :p

I'd love to see Phantom as well. There is far too many good shows on now, and I cannot afford any of them! :p

Cats is doing a tour of the UK now, I have no idea where it's been or where it is going but I know there is a tour on at the moment, you might be able to catch it without going to London.

I've only ever saw one musical on stage and it was in London, in May 2007 I took my mum and her best friend to London to see Mama Mia for their 50th birthdays. It was absolutely amazing, and we're going to see the show again when the International Tour comes to Scotland in April this year.

I've always said I want to see at least 1 show in both the West End (London) and Broadway, and hey now I'm half way there, lol.

Awh no :( If I ended up back in NY next year that's the show I would've seen.

And I just found out Evita closed in London in May, so that's my dream of seeing it out the window as well :sigh:

Oh well, it'll just have to be Wicked again :D

I love the Avenue Q soundtrack too :giggle:

Hopefully seeing Blood Brothers in Belfast, Evita in Dublin and Les Mis in London this summer :w00t: I would've gone back to Wicked, but Kerry Ellis is leaving before I go to London, so I might as well just see something different, and I've always wanted to see Les Mis.

Enjoy your shows Mystical! :)

I was all ready to go see Wicked again this summer, but I'm waiting until Kerry Ellis comes back to go again. However I might go see Avenue Q or maybe Hairspray, I guess it depends on who I go with. I'm definately going this summer though because I didn't last year.

yeah, I can't go to Avenue Q purely because of the people I'm going to London with, they all want to see Wicked, so I didn't object :p I've got my Evita and Blood Brothers tickets now too.

Kerry Ellis is on Broadway until the end of November, back in London Dec 1st.

Reposted to add: Did anyone see the original and current (last :( ) Broadway casts of RENT on the Tony awards - tribute to the show? The current cast sang a bit of La Vie Bohème and then they all sang a bit of Seasons of Love, plus the original cast talked about the history of RENT and how it changed Broadway, a whole generation of musical fans and the cast themselves (Idina Menzel was especially funny - although it'll only make sense if you know who else was in the original cast and how they're related to her :p). It's on Youtube if you haven't seen it.

High Society is the best musical in the world. When they toured England a few years back i went to see the same production 5 times! The music is brilliant, the story line hilarious - recommended watch to anyone who loves musicals!:)

I had to watch it on Youtube so that's the only bit I saw - I re-fell in love with Rent the other day after watching the movie, so I thought it was great :D

Well, I've been to three shows in the past week so I thought I'd stop by and post some reviews :D

Les Misérables - saw this in London on Monday and it was awesome :D Great cast, great ensemble too and really, really emotional. Loved 'I Dreamed a Dream', 'On My Own' and 'One Day More' especially - I thought the actress who played Fantine was really good. Full standing ovation at the end, complete sell-out too, and I had a great night

Wicked - saw this in London for the second time on Wednesday. I have to admit, I wasdn't sure what this was going to be like this time now Kerry Ellis has moved to Broadway for the summer. But, I was really surprised - Alexia Khadime is a really, really good Elphaba - her comic timing is great and she put so much passion into Defying Gravity and No Good Deed. I do think she sang some of the songs too fast, but that's my personal preference - I prefer Kerry Ellis/Idina Menzel slower versions. My only complaint was that Dianne Pilkington's voice is, imo, too shrill for Glinda - she needs to tone it a bit towards the end. Shrill Glinda is fine at the start, not so good during For Good. I preferrd her standby, who I saw the first time I saw the show. And for definite no-one beats Kristin Chenowith as Glinda.

Blood Brothers - saw this in Belfast last night, and I think my judgement was maybe affected a bit by having loved Wicked and and Les Mis so much. It's a longer-running show than either of those two, but not as memorable in terms of stand-out songs, and the music definitely didn't impress me as much. But it's still a good show, and there's a huge shocker at the end. But one guy's microphone was way too loud and I ended up with a headache, so I don't think I enjoyed it as much as I would've if I'd seen it a few weeks ago.

Still a great week though :D

It's been 2 years but I got to see "Jersey Boys" - my absolute fave. Go see it!

To answer your question Starred, Broadway does include non-musical plays so I think this thread is fine where it is. :)

Are we listing plays that we've only seen on Broadway and/or on tour?

Well I've talked about Broadway, the West End, on tour and ones I've seen in Dublin, so I think pretty much anything goes :giggle: - it's just a thread for musicals and plays that keeps everything in one place.

So you could mention any you've seen in your local area, it's more discussing all the plays themselves rather than the Broadway experience. I've just been lucky enough to be there once, but I've seen many more musicals than that.

It's unreal how addicting Wicked is. I saw it for the first time on a choir trip the summer after my freshman year of high school, and there were big macho football-player boys running into Virgin to buy the cast recording. That's one of the shows I seriously never get tired of - love it.

To whoever asked: yes, Eden's staying with Rent until the end. And shockingly, as much as I hated her Elphaba, I loved her Maureen. She played it a little more conservatively - more like an actual person than the crazy-performance-artist caricature that so many Maureens do. Plus, I saw her with Merle Dandridge as Joanne (who is GORGEOUS and about seven feet tall and has the most incredible voice), and their chemistry pretty much blew off the roof.

KAYLAAAAAAAAA! :glomp:

You have no idea of how much I´ve thought of you these last few weeks! You were the first person to talk to me about Idina Menzel, and now I´m completelz addicted to her! When I started my addiction to Wicked, I kept thinking 'Now THIS is what Kayla talked about!'. Seriously, girl, you half-started my biggest fandom to this day. :) Wicked, RENT, Idina, the Cheno and *sulks* chenzel are the most addictive things I've ever seen.

And on a very sad note, RENT is over. :bawl: And I didn't get to see it. It's such a sad feeling, when one of these musicals, especially one that is so important in a social context, closes. :(

I was in the mood to get my heart broken today (I blame the flu) so I decided to do the thing I had been avoiding at all costs for the past few weeks: downloaded the OBC recording of Spring Awakening. And now I really am heartbroken, because the show was one of the reasons I'm trying to go to New York next spring (I decided on Spring because I REALLY want to see 9 to 5) and now it's closing! GAH!
