:o I searched a little and couldn´t find a thread like this, so, if there is one, mods -sorry!
I was just wondering are there any fictional characters that you remember the most for something, that in some way touched your heart, influenced on you...that you learnt something from them? If there are, which ones and why? I would like this to become a sort of a tribute to them and the authors that gave them life, a place where you can share your feelings and thoughts...

I know this might sound a bit sad but Hagrid in the harry potter books really touched my heart. I cried everytime somebody mistreated him because he is such a nice guy! He's such a big softy and people in the books are so cruel to him! It's not fair! Everytime Hagrid got justice for his mistreatment or something good happened to him I would whoop out loud! I love to herald the misunderstood!

Roland from Stephen King's Dark Tower series - dude, I'd be his Susan any day!
Most of SK's characters really grab me though, because I think thats the main strength of his storytelling - he writes people so well - other characters of his I've loved have been: all of the DT ka-tet / Wolf, Jack and Henry from Talisman and Black House / Ralph and Lois from Insomnia...actually, I'll stop there :D
Different authors-wise I also really felt an affinity with Shadow, the main character from Neil Gaiman's American Gods.

Uhhhhhhhhhhh.
Scarlett O'Hara. I loved everything about her, even the horrible-ness. xD
Everyone in My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. That is an utterly heart breaking book.
Henry and Claire in The Time Traveler's Wife. The journey they go through is incredible.
Aragorn. Aragorn rules all. 'Nuff said.
That's all I can think of off-hand.

All of Jodi Picoult's and Nicholas Sparks' characters...I think I have cried in every single one of their books, because the characters are so strong and poignant, and I feel like I know them.
And, of course, all the LotR characters...especially Aragorn...

The time traveler from H.G. Well's "The Time Machine" was pretty ambitious. He was pretty heroic, rescuing the Eloi (spelling?) from the river and saving all of them from the Morlocks.
From S.M. Stirling's "Dies The Fire", Mike Havel is pretty heroic, taking the lives of his passengers in his planes into his own hands and taking them to safety and saving the prisoners from the bad guys. I love when he sees the bad guys ride away with an unknown prisoner, and he goes after them with only a makeshift spear and a knife, AND he's outnumbered.

Ron Weasley from Harry Potter really touched my heart.
I think I said I started loving him when I was eleven, but I think I read the first book at nine/ten. That is when I started loving him. I love him because he is very uncertain and not aware of his own abilities. I really see myself in that. And I love the way he grows throughout the books. He is a great friend and he is very brave and funny. The books would not be the same without him. For me, anyway.
And Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck from the Lord of the Rings trilogy also touched my heart. They are typical Hobbits, at the start of the story. I just love Hobbits. They are very funny. And they, too, grow a lot throughout the trilogy. They become warriors, in the end. And still, they don't lose all of their hobbit-ness. I really love them

Sirius and Dumbledore from Harry Potter. I cried soo much when they died. I don't know why they touched me... I guess Sirius was always so nice to harry. And dumbledore... He's just so wonderful. A great powerful wizard, but still so kind at heart.
Also Pippin from Lord of the Rings. He's such a cute little hobbit. Always messing things up without meaning to :giggle: And in the end he becomes a warrior. :p
Sirius Black from the Harry Potter series. I cried my eyes out when he died. I still can't believe it! :(

Wow, that's hard. In every book/movie/tv show I watch, I always find a favorite character that I just cling to. For me, a character I LOVe is someone I can feel sorry for, but in a good way. One which has a lot of angst, so I can give them a hug. For me, it's got to be:
Aragorn (Lord of the Rings)
Athos (Three Musketeers)
Arnold Rimmer (Red Dwarf)
Frank Burns (M*A*S*H)
Dale Gribble (King of the Hill)
Seamus Harper (Andromeda)
Remus Lupin (Harry Potter)
Bartleby (Dogma)
Telemain ("Enchanted Forest" books)
Sawyer (Lost-duh!)
Not really in any order, and I'm sorry there's so many of them. Basically my favorite characters. Everyone of my favorite characters have touched me, somehow.;) :o :shifty: :w00t:

Esther Greenwood from Sylvia Plaths 'The Bell Jar' touched me so much [mainly cause she reminded myself of me *cough*], Brandy Alexander in Palahiniuk's 'Invisible Monsters' - some of the things she comes out with is just so ... she is so thought-provoking.
Also, Cassandra in 'I capture the Castle', and Lirael in The Abhorsen Trilogy i just love - Cassandra because she is such a good narator, and everything is through her eyes. Lirael because, well ... she's Lirael. ;)

Allie and Noah - The Notebook
Jamie and Landon - A Walk to Remember
Sirius - Harry Potter :bawl:
Allie and Noah definately, everytime I watch that movie it affects me for weeks.
Muriel and Nicholas from Elizabeth Chadwick's book, "The Marsh King's Daughter".
Fulk Fitzwarin (a real historical figure!) from Elizabeth Chadwick's book, "Lords of the White Castle."
Scarlett O'Hara definately from GWTW and Scarlett.
Barbara Erskine's, Isobel of Buchan in "Kingdom of Shadows" and Matilda Lady of Hay in "Lady of Hay".
All the characters in Steven Pressfield's book, "Gates of Fire". It's about the Spartans and the battle of the 300 in Thermopylae. Except for the historical notes it's much more thought-provoking and realistic than the movie adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel!
William Wallace and Hamish from Braveheart! I always cry in that movie.
And lastly but definately not least, Selene from Barbara Wood's, "Soul Flame."
I get all choked up just thinking about these characters.

Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird. I first read the book aged 13 and I learned a lot from his thinking. Also Bartleby The Scrivener from the story of that name by Herman Melville. Someone mentioned Bartleby in Dogma; that character is named for the Melville story. :)

Fictional characters as in everything that's fiction? Or just books?
Well, if it's books we're talking about, the ones that popped in my head are:
- Paul and Jaelle of The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy by Guy Gavriel Kay. Maybe Kim too.
- Bastian of Neverending Story by Michael Ende. And Xayide. She's cool like that.
- Grenouille of Perfume by Patrick Suskind
- Gil of a series of portuguese books called Triangle J. Kids' stuff, but it affected me a lot back then.
- Elphaba of Wicked by Gregory Maguire
- Sansa of The Song of Ice and Fire saga, by G.R.R. Martin
- Mrs Coulter of the His Dark Materials trilogy. I like the evil ones. :p
Television characters:
- Sawyer, Sayid, Ana Lucia of Lost (we're talking about touching the heart, not favorite characters - although I do love these 3 :giggle: )
- Cristina, Burke, Izzie, Denny Duquette of Grey's Anatomy
- House, Cuddy (guess where? :p)
- Bree of Desperate Housewives
- Fry, Bender, Leela of Futurama
- Nelle Porter, John 'Biscuit' Cage, Ling, Richard Fish of Ally McBeal
- Niles, Martin, Daphne, Roz and the dog of Frasier
- Lorelai, Emily of Gilmore Girls
- Megan O'Hara (just appeared for a bunch of episodes... :( ), Chris, Liz of Nip/Tuck
Cinema characters:
- Jack Sparrow of Pirates of the Caribbean
- Jack Skellington, Sally of Nightmare Before Christmas
- Queen Isabel/Izzi Creo of The Fountain
- Sara, Marion of Requiem for a Dream
- Edward, Peg of Edward Scissorhands
- Aileen Wuornos of Monster
- Laura of The Hours
- Chigusa of Battle Royale
- Grace of Dogville
And now for Disney time! :w00t:
- Meg of Hercules (I totally love this anti-typical Disney lady! especially in the portuguese version :D )
- Mulan, Mushu of Mulan
- Tarzan, Jane, Terk of Tarzan
- Belle, Beast, Lumiere of Beauty and the Beast
- Aladdin, Iago, Abu, Jasmine, Genie of Aladdin
- Scar, Zazu of The Lion King
- Clopin of The Hunchback of Notre Dame
- Sebastian, Ursula of The Little Mermaid
And that's more than enough, I guess. Sorry to bother ya! :o

I'm not even going to begin listing the Lost & Disney characters, because I'd probably name every Lost character and way too many Disney characters.
So:
Merry, Pippin, Frodo & Sam - Lord of the Rings
Piggy - Lord of the Flies (I always felt sorry for him, and he symbolises so much)
Spike -Buffy the vampire slayer
Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean
Claire, Zach & Hiro - Heroes
Edward Scissorhands
Jin-Woo & Su-jeong
Ha-suk
Su-eun
Ju-young &Hui-chan (Especially Hui-chan)
- All from 'Sad Movie'. (It's a Korean movie that really lives up to it's name. I'd recommend it to everyone, but make sure you have a truckload of tissues at the ready.)

Leah Lewis-Hall and the whole Amish family(especially Ethan) from The Angels Trilogy by Lurlene McDaniel. These books are so depressing. I cried for 30 minutes after I reread it last night. :giggle:
I can't believe someone else has actually read that series! I really thought I was the only one. I admit that I have somewhat of an Amish fetish, living in very heavily populated Amish country.
Anyway, on the topic of this thread...
Alex, from Everything is Illuminated hands down is the premium (:giggle: ) character for me. He is so endearing.
Otherwise, it would be...
Charlie from The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter
Everyone from Lord of the Rings

I mentioned this in the other thread but Mean Season by Heather Cochran really blew me away. I was thinking it was going to be a light and easy read, and in many ways it was but the main character, Leanne Gitlin really tore at my heart strings.
She seems to be completely normal, only coming from the smallest of small towns and then as you read on you learn all the tragedy that had hit her family and I swear I almost cried twice. Usually a little pain doesn't throw me that way, but I think it was maybe how strong she was throughout the entire novel. Just amazing.
Read it. :)

I'm going to say Elphaba from Wicked... by Gregory Maguire. She's such an intelligent and strong character, which just makes the ending seem so much worse than it is in The Wizard of Oz.

Fitz from Robin Hobb's Farseer and Tawny Man series. He has the worst luck, suffers through countless horrors, but he keeps on going. But I love him the most because he's not the bravest or the cleverst, and he whines about all the things that happen to him, and that makes him the most human character that I've seen (well, read anyway).

I loved Jem and Scout in To Kill A Mockingbird.Seeing racism through the eyes of children really brings it home. And Boo Radley and Atticus and Mayella....actually the whole gang!I also really loved Red from The Shawshank Redemption because he was just so honest. And of course John Coffey from The Green Mile.I don't think I've ever cried so much over a fictional character! And Sirius and Dumbledore...cried for days when they died.Just about everybody from The Sisterhood of The Travelling Pants, but especially Lena,Bridget and Bailey.Stargirl from em,Stargirl,Dinnie from Bloomability and all those adorable bunnies from Watership Down. And Rose and Ruby from The Girls. And everyone from Jodi Picoult's novels. There, that enough?

Hmm... this is a tricky one. Sticking to books, I'd say:
Callum, Sephy and Jude from the Noughts and Crosses trilogy. They're great books, read them! They make me cry whenever I read them.
Sirius Black, just like everybody else. And, at risk of sounding like an idiot, Draco Malfoy. That last scene with him in Half Blood Prince... I carried it around in my head word for word for weeks after I read it. I fell asleep crying that night, but it had little to do with Dumbledore. Draco's character just captivates me.
If I'm allowed to go into TV/Movie characters, then here goes nothing:
Donnie from Donnie Darko. He's so... not right. But you feel kind of sorry for him, the way Franks stalks him at every turn...
Simba from The Lion King. I went through a huge obsession and I'd watch this every day. Even though I've seriously grown out of it, I get the movie out every once in a while and have a cry while I watch it.
Boone. Boone's story just makes me too emotional to describe.
Sam and Dean from Supernatural. Their lives have been too messed around with form me not to care. I've cried during Supernatural. Yes, I admit it.
And I think that's it for now. But seriously, go and read Noughts and Crosses.

Pip in Dicken's "Great Expectations"
The way Estella treats him is just beyond cruel! He's like a lost puppy following her home. And all the stuff that happens to him - and his transaction from poor to rich to poor again - and him growing up.
Luna Lovegood in "Harry Potter"
The way nobody liked her much! I felt so much empathy with her because I know exactly how she feels.
Quazimodo(sp?) in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"
Well first off his looks! And then the girl he likes goes with the other guy - what a blow to the heart.
Will and Lyra in Phillip Pullmans "His Dark Materials" trilogy.
The ending of the series explains all ... I wont spoil it.
Sam in "Lord of the Rings"
I'm going from the movies in this but when Frodo shouts at him in the last movie and takes Gollums side - and Sam still comes back and saves his life! Sam was just such a great character and perfectly acted!
There are others but I can't think of them on the spot!

Almost all of the characters from the Lord of the Rings books I admired because of the friendships and noble traits and just seeing how they grow throughout.
I loved Mr. Bennet and Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. I feel like I would get along very well with Mr. Bennet and I just love Mr. Darcy as a whole.
Mrs. deWinter of Rebecca touched my heart, only because I would read something, and then I would automatically think of what I'd do or say in that situation, and then I'd read ahead and find that Mrs. deWinter did in fact do what I would have done!
I felt really bad for Othello in Othello, I don't remember what it was about him that touched my heart though.
John from The Crucible touched my heart because of his constant refusal to give in to something he knew was wrong. Giles Corey and Rebecca Nurse also touched my heart for the same reason.
Aaaaaaand I must add....
Jack from Lost. For some reason, I can just totally understand why he does and says things and why he makes the decisions he makes. Also Hurley-- he's just a genuine guy who isn't out for himself.

There have been quite a few fictional characters that I have really felt something for, and usually they are the bad guys. For some reason I just feel for them, unless of course their totally diabolical. ;)
Kreia / Darth Traya - Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: Kreia is someone who at first I found utterly annoying. However, as the game progressed she came to be one of my favorite characters of any game or book. She had been betrayed countless times, so she had a reason for not being the nicest of people. She was wise and didn't commit horrible deeds either. She was just hurt and wanted to get back at the galaxy for what it did to her.
V - V for Vendetta: V is someone, who like my other favorite fictional characters, had been though a lot. He had been used like a lab rat for who knows how long. What the government had done to him was monstrous, cruel, and disgusting, so he decided to get back at them. His words, his way of speech, his purpose really moved me.
Yoda - Star Wars: Yoda was pretty much one of my favorite characters from the moment I saw the Empire Strikes Back. He is someone so tiny, so old, so fragile [at first glance anyway] yet he kicks some serious ass.
Olympias - Alexander: Alright so maybe she's not the nicest of people, but she's just looking out for herself and for her child. She manipulates to get what she wants, but for the most part, never does to much harm. She's pretty much a really cool character with a killer accent. :D
Gandalf - Lord of the Rings: Has to be one of the best characters of all time, IMO. He's a good person who is constantly helping out and doing all in his power to make sure everything goes smoothly.
Miranda Priestly - The Devil Wears Prada: She was great in the book and even more great in the movie. She is probably the biggest biotch you will ever meet, but deep down inside she's seems to be a good person. The good person in her is just covered in layers and layers of arrogance. But one you get deep down, you see she really does care for those around her, just chooses not to show it.
Whew, ok I'm done now. :w00t:
Sam and Patrick -the perks of being a wallflower-love them. they're so caring and nice. they're hilarious. and the fact that patrick was gay and that the guy he's in love with denies it is just....it makes me feel sooo bad for him... <3<3<3

lost - jack. i know there are a lot of jack haters/bashers out there, so i'm sorry if you don't agree, but jack is one of my favorite television characters of all time. his heroic attitute and the way he takes care of people is just so beautiful to see in such a horrific situation. (the plane crash) i love his flashback story too. when i watched All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues back in season one, it was THE episode that TRULY grabbed my attention and expanded my love for the show. to know that jack was put into a situation where he could lie and let his father get away with what he wanted - something that was morally wrong - or do the right thing, causing a rift in the relationship with his father, i found it so heroic that he chose to do the right thing, aware of the consequences that it would further have on their relationship.
locke. i don't even think i need to elaborate on this since so many people agree that the character of john locke on lost will go down in history. for someone who lived an absolutely horrible life, where he had nothing going for him, no motivation, no one to love him or care for him: for someone living that life to have such faith and hope in life itself is truly amazing. enough said.
kate. i think the public view on kate is a 50/50. you either love her dearly or despise her greatly. i disagree with the latter. kate is honestly the first woman i had ever watched on television that showed me that material objects hold no importance. that it's okay to be independent and strong, and to be a leader. women on television are usually portrayed as housewives who cook, clean, and live inside their homes. they hate the outdoors and animals and insects. kate showed me otherwise, and i know that sounds corny. even though i didn't really like her character so much this past season (3), i still have respect for her character that a lot of people gave up a long time ago.
the lovely bones by alice sebold - susie. if you have ever read this story, i think you would probably agree that susie salmon is a pretty incredible teenager. when susie is 14 years old, she is raped and murdered by her neighbor. he basically mutilates her body and hides it, and then escapes town, and the police never find her body. anyway, she narrates the story from heaven, and she watches her family and friends continue their lives without her. and even though susie still remains 14 years old in heaven, her soul and mind grow into that of an adult, and she becomes wise and truly beautiful on the inside.

I think the character I've felt sorry for the most is probably Piggy from "Lord Of The Flies" because everyone was just so horrible to him and he was the smartest of them all!
Next it's probably Mr Darcy from "Pride and Prejudice" I absolutely love Mr Darcy he's so amazing :D And if you ever read the books "Mr Darcys Diary" or "Me & Mr Darcy" It makes you love him all the more! I love how Lizzies perception of him is just so wrong of him at the beginning and it forming into one of the greatest loves ever!
Holly Golightly from "Breakfast at Tiffinays" I have only seen the movie but I love it! She's just such a great character and compeltely hilarious to watch :D

So many from Harry Potter - Severus Snape, the Weasley twins, Luna Lovegood, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Albus Dumbledore
Will and Lyra from His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman - their love story was so tragic I was crying at the end. Probably one of the best written romances I've ever read.
Noah and Allie from The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks - ditto.
Anna from My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult - I was crying so hard when I finished this book. Anna was so well written.

All the characters in both of Jonathan Safran Foer's books. Everyone simply must read his novels, I've never read books that are so hilarious and moving at the same time. Amazing.

i've been meaning to read his books. i saw "everything is illuminated" and it's one of my favorite movies. I don't know if it's anything like the book (im sure the book is better), but every character meant a lot to me. escpecially alex. i love how he talks. "okay, she is deranged, but so so playful."
//EDIT//
fan of garden state? "infinate abyss." ...best movie..........

You should definitely read the books then! I haven't seen the movie (I can't find it anywhere in Wisconsin, I swear it's been banned or something ) so I can't really compare, but I highly recommend that you read the book regardless. I think the movie left out a large part of one of the stories (the book is sort of two stories in one...) and although I relate to the Alex story the most, there is so much emotion in the other story. Were Brod and The Kolker and Yankel in the movie?
But I agree that the way Alex talks is hilarious (that line about Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. is, I think, a direct quote from the book). And then towards the end of the book (and maybe movie? I don't really know) we get to see so much more of Alex. He is, as this thread says, endearing. I think I replied awhile ago saying that Alex was my choice, as he is clearly premium. But I guess I just felt like saying it again :giggle:
But you should also read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. It's about a nine year old boy learning to cope with his father's death in the September 11th attack while trying to find the lock a key that his father left him belongs to. It's absolutely hilarious, despite how heavy it sounds. I'm really not sure which of JSF's books I prefer.
And yes, I am a fan of Garden State. It's basically my favorite movie.
Wow, this is quite long. :p
uhh i dont think Brod and The Kolker and Yankel were in it..it was mostly just alex, jonathan and the grandfather..
yeah garden state is an awesome movie.
andrew would be another person...to go with this thread..

Fictional characters:
The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice:
Lestat, and also Louis. Lestat is however my fave.
LOTR:
Aragorn, he just rules, then the hobbits, Arwen, Eowyn, Gandalf, Haldir, and I had some soft spot for Gollum too.
Harry Potter:
Harry, Ron, Hermoine, Ginny, Hagrid, Buckbeak, Hedwig, Luna Lovegood, Dumbledore, Neville Longbottom.
Sagaen om Isfolket (The Saga of the People form The Ice Valley)
Tiril, Tengel den Gode (Tengel the Good), Sol, Heike, and many others...been a while since I have read this series.
And I am sure I can come up with more but those are the fictional ones from the books I can remember...as for TV series:
Sawyer (Duh lol)
Kate
Hurley
Desmond
24
Jack Bauer hehe
and from How the West Was Won about the Maahan family (huge in the 80's here in Norway)
Luke Macahan, Zeb Machahan, and Wolf foot or whatever Duane Loken's character was in the series lol. Been

Tom from Prince of Tides, he was so sarcastic, damaged and just all around awesome character. I loved that book but hated the movie.
Stu Redman from The Stand, I can just relate to his personality a lot. I'm only half-way through the book and every chapter I read I wish he was in it.
Sydney Carton from A Tale of Two Cities, he evoloved through the novel and just the idea that someone can realize their true purpose in the world and do something heroic along with it is amazing to me.
Boxer from Animal Farm, because I feel bad for him :(
Hamlet, I don't know I just really liked his character and I think Mel Gibson played him great in the movie.
Any Nicholas Sparks character :giggle:

So many characters touched my heart. But the first thing that comes to mind is George and Lennie from Of Mice and Men. My heart aches when I read that book.
Also Severus Snape. He's a true hero and in the last Harry Potter book I cried so much when he died and when we learn his story. Such a beautiful story.
From the TV world there's two characters who owns my heart: Sawyer and Spike. They haven't had a perfect life and they have grown bitter at the world. But they fall in love and remember the person they are at heart with that love. *sigh* That's beauty right there.
Last I have to mention the newest fictional character that's made his way to my heart: Jacob Black. A character I feel I can relate to and love. I truly hope he'll have his happy ending. He deserves nothing less.

I also really love Ben from Lost. I know he's all evil and everything, but I really feel for him! He's just someone you'd want to hug. Or wave to... from a distance :p
And Sylar from Heroes! I really relate to his not living up to his parent's expectations, and not fitting in. I want to hug him too :(

In a TV Serie, Jack touched my soul the most. I mean, he's so broken! And of course, Matthew Fox's delicate way of acting breaks my heart.
Like many people, I adore Sylar too, I feel so sorry for him, even though he's a killer. Two days ago in London I met a guy who thought so too, so we're definately not alone with our love for Syler :p
Hiro is amazing, I mean he'd do anything to save the world, protect his history and his childhood hero, even though he's compromising his own happiness. It takes a lot of strenght to do that.

Factory Girl - Edie Sedgwick (real person but the portretation by Sienna Miller was just so awesome). I don't know why but she really broke my heart. I think maybe because she let her true love pass by because she was so scared and manipulated by Andy Warhol, she just really broke my heart.
There are a lot of others too, but that's the most important one.

A lot of Harry Potter characters. In particular: Lily, James, Sirius, and Luna.
Lily and James because they taught me what I want out of life - a relationship like theirs; true love. Lily and Luna because they're both the type of people I want to be. Sirius because he's my favorite character, and I admire him a lot.

Basically any of the Harry Potter book characters. They literally made me who I am. They are like family. I feel like, if they were real, I could tell them anything. Anything. Which is alarming. But mostly:
Hermoine: Cause she's made me want to be like her, I want to be good and get good grades and have close friends.
Fred and George Weasly: Cause they made me see that everythings a joke if you look at it the right way
The Marauder's (not including Peter): Cause they made me see that friendship can be true and goes beyond death.
The teachers: Cause it made me realize that even when you think someone should be unfair and evil, they can suprise you, just because they love you.
Ron: Cause he showed me that it is okay to be afraid of spiders and to have embarssing moments. (And so much more, I love him:giggle:)
Bella from Twilight as well. Cause she makes me realize what I don't want to be. I know that sounds weird but she can be a down right pain sometimes.
And of course, Jack, cause he's made me realize that sometimes the people who everyone loves doesn't want to be that person.
