Natalie, open a file (image) with the software and play with it. Try to select parts of the image, apply effects to it, etc. :)

-cut that selection (or crop), then go to File - Save - Save as new image, or Edit - Paste-Paste as new Image, then apply some effects on the new image

I don't know how to do it in the "regular" way, but I can suggest a workaround:

Take the two images, open a third image (all with the same program), "Select all" in the two images, then Paste them in the third empty image. (an idea will be to apply effects to the backgrounds of the two images if they are different coloring before you paste them into the third).
Then modify and play with the third and final image until you are satisfied with the result.
If the third image has a lot of white space, you can remove it by selecting the new two-image banner and "Crop" it into another "final" file.
