Exactly! Jack acts like he always knows better and god forbidd that Kate should have any other ideas than his or go up agains him. He gets to decide when she's going into the jungle or carry the dynamite or whatever... I don't see that as romantic, I see that as a slap in the face for women really.

I LOVE that episode! It's the fact that Sawyer sees Kate as though if she say she's gonna take his spot in the raft he does believe her. He does respect her for being independent and strong and that she will stand up for herself just like him.
Also Kate learns that Sawyer won't be a pushover, even though he obviously cares about her.

Okay the thing about it is that Sawyer does take Kate seriously. And she WAS a prisoner. You can't just end up on an Island and all is forgotten. She can't supress her past like it never happened. All I'm saying is that in that episode we do see Sawyer taking Kate seriously and Kate learning she should take him seriously as well. I'm a sucker for the angsty Skate :D

Skate has been characterized, from the very beginning, by a sense of equality and mutuality. What is seldom remarked about the showdown in BTR is that the basis for it is that Sawyer respects Kate's intelligence and abilities. She threatened him by saying that if she wanted his spot she'd get it, and he took her seriously. It was only after Michael confirmed that he had talked to Kate before reaching the decision to kick Sawyer off that Sawyer went after her. He thought she'd made good on her threat, and he outed her, showing he wasn't going to let her step all over him without a fight.

Jack, OTOH, has often taken a paternalistic view... questioning her judgement, telling her when she can and can't come along, or carry dynamite, or whatever. Maybe there's a woman somewhere that finds that attractive but, frankly, I find it so damn patronizing that it just makes me grind my teeth. It feels like a throwback to a time when women weren't allowed to be on the front lines, when it was argued that their judgement wasn't level-headed enough to hold management jobs or be in positions of authority. It's condescending, and it does exactly the opposite of build a woman's confidence... in fact, all it does is make a woman doubtful of her abilities and apologetic for every little thing...

Jack couldn't handle it. Him and Locke were always fighting over them (Ah.. Jocke :heart:) and Jack was ready to hand out guns to un-trained people and go into the jungle again. I think in season 3 she'll be with Sawyer, It's the choice I root for ( I liked the triangle but they want to end it! ) I'm not saying S. because I like Skate. I was thinking Jate was going to happen until a couple of weeks ago, but recent spoilers and promo made me change my mind...

In BTR Sawyer showed no respect for Kate at all, because he humiliated her in front of everyone, he hurt her and he looked sorry about it in the end.
Sawyer is a selfish nature, but this is the great chance for a change in his life, now that he loves someone for the first time. I think it's time for a turning point in this man's life, so I'm inclined to think that the writers will see the potential in this storyline.
I believe Jack loves Kate too, and I think he repects her, but he doesn't understand her at all, or at least not as much as Sawyer does, with Sawyer I think it's just a matter of looking at her, and he understands..and I think this was there since day 1.

So my vote is Sawyer now...maybe Jack later in the serie

Great post Isen, I agree with what you said about Sawyer's character. And Guily, I don't think any Skater or Sawyer fan thinks that Sawyer is perfect by any means - I definately don't. He didn't really show Kate any respect in BTR when he told everyone that she was the criminal right after he said to her that her secret was safe with him. He humiliated her, but so did Jack in THP and LTDA when he screamed at her. None of the characters in this show are anywhere near perfect, but their fans are normally people who can relate to them, so that's why it always so biased.

I was wondering what people thought who she was really going to choose after all the spoilers lately and the trailer for season 3. Since we can't go onto the other ships thread and post pro and con arguments, we could discuss it here.

Wait a minute, maybe I'm not understanding, but are you saying that when Jack was yelling and humilating Kate and acting like her father by telling her, a grown women that she wasn't coming, all that was romantic?:confused: Jack wasn't all about being protective b/c he realized how much she meant to him. Its also about his jealousy. Ever since Sawyer came back, how much time was Kate spending with Jack? None. She was spending all her time with Sawyer. That scene was anything but romantic. So many things to responsed to here. First you say that Jack was wrong but at the same time it was romantic. The flashbacks are there to help you understand not only the characters life before the island, but it often serves to parallel what the character is going through, emotionally on the island. Why is it, that by watching Jack's fb you understand him, but not Sawyer's. Liking a character has nothing to do with understanding him. I don't like Jack, but watching his fb's I understand him, but still don't like him. I don't know one Skater that cheered when Sawyer conned Kate. Watching his fb's with Cassidy make perfect sense. He cons a women he is starting to love, its becoming too real for him. On the island, he does the same thing. As far as Sawyer taking the guns, well good on him. Why does Jack or Locke get to decide you gets a gun and why. He gets that power of decision because he's the leader. Big deal. At that point Jack isn't thinking rationally. He's all about revenge on the Others and was ready to hand a gun to Jin all because he wanted it. Sawyer going after the medicine, was a way to get back at Jack. Why does Jack, the doctor need the guns?

Excelent point, Luanne. Sawyer humiliated Kate in this moment, but was he to let everybody think tha HE poisoned Michael? Why?
Did she show any respect for him? Why was he to be falsely accused?
Did she show any respect for Jack in that matter too? She manipulated him as well.

Okay, this is really starting to turn into a debate over here... :) And I want to participate!! :w00t:

I voted for Jack for various reasons... But basically I just think that Jack is the kinda man Kate has never met before and that with him Kate has a chance for an actual relationship. They don't care about each other or feel connected to each other because they have similar pasts but just because... they just do. And I think there's a reason why it was J&K who met each other on the first day they were on the island. I think their meeting represented the idea that all the characters have a chance on the island for a new life and forget their past, what they've done and just start over. :rolleyes:

Now I really want to clear up that I really, really like Sawyer. I think he's fantastic and one of the most interesting characters. :) And I like S/K friendship very much and it's great for those two to have someone who understands where the other one is coming from. But connection and deep mutual understanding shouldn't be confused with love.
In my opinion Kate and Sawyer are like two blind people. No one understands better what it's like to be blind than an other blind. However, they can't help each other cross the street or make their way in the world. :no:

And I really don't like Sawyer's thought 'tiger doesn't change its stripes'. :( I feel bad for him cause he feels that way and I don't think Kate's the one who could help him with that. I think Sawyer just constantly reminds Kate of all the negative things she's done, which is good in a way, but does nothing to help her deal with it and move on. :shifty:

I think at first Kate really thought that Jack was above her but that has changed and now in my opinion Kate's starting to find the woman inside of her who genuinely cares for people, who has dreams and a future. Basically what I believe Kate can have with Jack is, like Damon said, real adult love. :)

Well, all that was actually why I think Kate should choose Jack. But after all the spoilers and the trailers (especially the latest one) I'm very confident that she will choose Jack. That trailer including the skate kiss definitely served its purpose; it got skaters all excited and jaters a bit confused cause let's face it: the end of s2 was pretty jatey ;) It makes total sense that they want to make it look like 50-50 chance for the triangle to get solved either way. But I think the fact that they showed skate kiss in a trailer and that it's certain that K&S get to see each other is why Kate will probably choose Jack. It's very likely that K&S see each other in the first episode and Kate won't have any idea where Jack is. And what will make Kate's declaration of love within the first 4 episodes heart-wrenching is the fact that she hasn't seen the one she loves, maybe she even thinks he's dead. :shock:

Based on pure facts things couldn't possibly look any worse for us jaters :rotflol: But I trust that the writers know what they're doing and that Kate choosing Jack will create more interesting story lines, with the Juliet thing and all. :p

Well, I'll say it again: Sawyer.
I'm sure lots of this has already been said, so I'll just try to link my words to the (very articulated!) posts right in front of my nose.

Kate has already met someone like Jack before- it was Tom, her old sweetheart whom presumably she left as well as her connections with her home town after some mysterious incident. Even if their feelings for each other had survived over time, Kate's not quite ordinary lifestyle would have been enough to pull them more and more apart. This was something major in her past; on the other hand, Jack does not strike me as a warm, empathic someone that can relate to her demons. On and off the island Jack seems quite out of emotional depth when it comes to his girls. His relationship with Sarah started on the wrong premises, kind of charity/sacrifice/friendliness and failed, living him an estranged and confused HUSBAND but not a heartbroken lover and her an estranged and somewhat bitter WIFE.
There are lots more to say here, but to keep it short: one can assume one's past and draw some conclusions that influence their current conduct but never deny their past doings. And if you have someone around that can relate to your own experiences, only for the best. Sawyer and Kate share a burdened past, trust and value each other in their own ways, not always according to community cannons (and calls the other's bluff when needed:p ). What they also share is undeniable physical attraction (which I personally cannot see in Jack and Kate's scenes).To me, the two essential things in a relationship are communication and physical attraction. With these, things might just work and Kate and Sawyer had them from sec 1. I'd reaally like to see them go figure stuff together and be happy and fun, as they mostly are whenever they meet.

I voted for Sawyer. Even despite the Long Con he's been supportive of Kate's decisions this season (see THP, ML for example) and there for her when she needed it like hugging her when she cried, helping her shoot the Others (even when he thought the two had had net sex). Contrast that with Jack's jealous behaviours which result in him berating her, ignoring her, shutting her out for a good chunk of episodes.

I voted for Jack for various reasons... But basically I just think that Jack is the kinda man Kate has never met before and that with him Kate has a chance for an actual relationship. They don't care about each other or feel connected to each other because they have similar pasts but just because... they just do. And I think there's a reason why it was J&K who met each other on the first day they were on the island. I think their meeting represented the idea that all the characters have a chance on the island for a new life and forget their past, what they've done and just start over

I would have to disagree with your statement that Jack is not the kind of man Kate has ever met before. Tom is just like Jack and I think that did help with her intially attraction to Jack. I think there is an obvious parallel between the two.

Sawyer does want to change. His whole "tiger" speech wasn't a knock against Kate, but more of how he see's himself. We first hear his partner say that to him, to remind him that he will never be better than a con. Gordy told him its not what you do, its who you are. Sawyer has so much self hate that he doesn't think he is capable or deserving of change. A tiger don't change its stripes, is how he see's himself. He won't ever be better than what he is
