Cube

Yes Cube. I really liked that movie. With Lost now on, it reminds me of the theory about "hand picking" the people on the island. Like with Cube, you had the mathematician girl, and the doctor etc.

My favourites have been mentioned already, thanks Marvster..(Usual Suspects, the Others, Fight Club)

Other movies with good twists ..( I emphasise the good because there's some movies out there that don't have good twists)
-Matchstick Men
-Memento
I will post again when I can think of some more

It is an underrated movie! You're about the 7th person in my life I have met to have seen it. I don't even remember it being in the cinemas:p . Did you hear about the second one they made? "Cube 2: Hypercube" I have yet to see it anywhere here in Australia so I may look around online. However, I don't think it'd be any good, just a feeling.

Yeah, Cube 2 is crap mate, don't bother.

Go for Cube Zero instead, which is a prequel to the original - Awesome movie :D

Are you serious?? There's a prequel? I will check that one out;) . I heard a good story about the Cube director. He made a scene on film about what was outside of the Cube, what physically was outside of it. But! He later destroyed it and said nobody will EVER know the real intentions of the Cube. I love stories like that.:)

A lot of good ones mentioned already .... Two others which I feel are worthy of top spots would be: Hitchcock's Charade; and Body Heat. I think Planet of the Apes would qualify as well.

The characters (especially the bad guys) in Cube Zero are so much better, and OMG! The death at the beginning is just FOUL! LOL :D

I just love movies with twists in them, keeps me busy and engrossed. Some great ones mentioned already. Number one for me is The Usual Suspects, I remember being blown away when I saw the ending to that. To list a few others:

- Arlington Road
- Shawshank Redemption
- Identity
- Unbreakable
- Devils Advocate (sorta has a twist)

1. Nueve Reinas (Nine Queens) - amazing criminal twist!
2. The Village - I had no idea Shyamalan would do that!
3. Fight Club - I miss David Fincher's movies...
4. In the Mood for Love - Kar-Wai is so amazing! We could never be sure 'till the last scene...

All four belong to my list of favourite movies!

Just felt that I should point out that, even though there are similarities, Charade is not a Hitchcock film.

If it's by Hitchcock or Shyamalan, it's probably good, but it might not be a twist.

Well, I recently saw Taking Lives with Angelina Jolie and Ethan Hawke. Has anyone seen it? Well, it´s a great movie, has many surprise effects and definitely good twist. I advise you to watch it.

Another one I remember is Hide and seek (I think it´s called like that in english) with Robert de Niro and Dakota Fanning. Excellent movie and definitely the end I wasn´t expecting!

Yes, he's producing Zodiac, but Fincher had to change the title of the movie 'cause another one about the same serial killer was released recently (The Zodiac with Rory Culkin)... so, the new title is Chronicles. But, there's no doubt, it's gonna be really good! He's such a great director and has an amazing sense of dynamic and art.

When I posted here today, I thought the same thing about your avatar! I love Amelie! I downloaded the soundtrack last month and can't stop listening to it!

Oh, you're talking about Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (one of the longest titles of all times!) in a previous post, right? I love this movie so much... in fact I'm on the computer and watching it right now with my brother! What amazes me the most is how Jim Carrey is capable of playing dramatic roles! We're so used to watch him on comedies... and yet when he does a drama I don't even think twice: I just watch it... the funny thing is that doesn't happen when he does a comedy.... ;)

 Thank you for the update! I went to IMDB and they don't seem to be up to date with it at all!! I didn't know it's under a new name now. It does look good-BUT scary though:( !! I also read he is working with Brad Pitt again for some other movie.

I love the piano pieces (La Valse d'Amélie and Comptine D'un Autre Été: L'après Midi) the best. I really love this movie:love: . It's like nothing else I have seen, the colours, the sets. It's so sweet and so beautiful, I'm glad you like it! It's a BIG change from my normal taste in movies! BUT your avator is SO cool! It has been so long since I have seen that poster:) . Thank you!

I didn't know about that! I love Pitt's work! It must be hard for him not to be recognized as a great actor only due to the way he looks... but you can see the guy knows what he's doing! Since 12 Monkeys! BTW, I can't wait to see Babel! Not only because of Pitt, but specially because of Cate Blanchett (my favourite actress) and Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu (the most amazing mexican director!)!!! Pitt and Blanchett will be together again in The Good German (with one of my favourite young actors, Tobey Maguire!)... this year and the next are full of good news! ;)

Yes, I love La Valse d'Amelie, but I like the orchestra version the most. I'm addicted to soundtracks! Specially instrumental ones... love Shyamalan's movies's OSTs by James Newton Howard and The Hour OST by Phillip Glass! About the I Want to Believe poster... yeah, I miss X-Files so much! It hasn't been so long since I last saw the poster 'cause I spent my college break watching the old seasons! I re-watched the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th ones... and I'm still downloading the first ones! I can't wait for the 2nd movie! Though we'll still have to wait a little while... How about you? Which others OSTs do you like?

Great choice! This movie is really enigmatic! But for me, the key to understand it is the movie theater scene. Donnie and Grechen go to the cinema and the movie is "The Last Temptation of Christ", so that's the parallel: after the accident, everything went well to Donnie, but then a tragedy happens... so, he has the chance to change the future, a second chance to do the right thing and he leans that it demands a huge sacrifice from himself... My favourite part is the Smurf analisys!

Other movies with a great twist...(apart from M. Night Shyamalan's movies and the aforementioned)...

Have you seen Amores Perros? Iñárritu first big movie? It works just as 21 grams... 3 stories that are connected. It was the first movie I saw with Gael Garcia Bernal... and again the soundtrack is by Gustavo Santaolalla... the guitars... really great!

Other movies with a great twist...(apart from M. Night Shyamalan's movies and the aforementioned)...

Primal Fear! It was Edward Norton's first work, right? He's so incredible! And it was a great twist! And we're talking about the 90's, so, it's pretty surprising! Identity is Primal Fear's baby!
I don't think I've ever heard of The Crying Game... is it new? Here in Brazil people usually give movies an entirely new title, so maybe I've seen it...

Thanks! I love this movie! I just don't know why Richard Kelly decided to have such a strange cast for his new movie... the "something" Tales... specially after working with such great actors... well, okay, he worked with Patrick Swayze... but at least the part fitted (sp?) him...

Yes Edward Norton's Primal Fear. I mentioned this in Hardercore's thread where he should have won the Oscar instead of Cuba Gooding Jr in that particular year. I have not seen Identity. I have not heard much about this movie. Is it recent? I can't seem to think if I've ever heard of it. I may have heard of it. Do you reccommend it?

I haven't seen The King yet, but I heard it's pretty strange. I saw the trailer and the mood was weird indeed. I still have my doubts about Gael's talents but he does make great choices! Oh, and his English is good because he lives in England and studied there... he did another movie in which he had to speak english called Dot the I, a british production with Natalia Verbeke and James Darcy (oh, it has a huge twist! And I recommend it! The production is kind of poor, but the end is really good! The funny thing is he plays a Brazilian guy... who was born in Rio... like me ;) ).
Hope you find Amores Perros!

I'll look for it! Thanks! Edit: Yeah, of course I saw it! About IRA! I love this movie and, no doubt, I could never expect that twist! Love Stephen Rea's acting and Miranda Richardson (She's fantastic! have you seen Spider? She impressed me a lot!) And, of course, again, love Neil Jordan's work and the value he gives to his homeland. Did you see Breakfast on Pluto? Is my Jordan's favourite!

Yes, Norton should've won that Oscar... one of the greatest injustices along with Cate Blanchett's loss for Gwyneth Paltrow and that horrible acting in Shakespeare in Love! Cate is just perfect in Elizabeth! And she would surely give us all a far better speech... without all that tears... argh! About Identity, no I do not recommend it... the cast is not bad, we have John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Ray Liotta (I just hate him!), Alfred Molina... but the script is a little boring...

The Da Vinci Code. Wasn't really a twist, but I just love the ending. It was so powerful, and because I ended up reading the book after I saw the movie, I was completely surprised.

Eternal Sunshine didn't really have a "twist" either, but I loved how different the ending was. And it is my favorite movie of all time, hence the user name, people. :D

THELMA AND LOUISE probably has the best twist ending ever invented though.

I don't think Breakfast on Pluto is out in my part of the world:( . I know it has Cillian Murphy. But we get all the movies late here :( . IS it any good?

I wanted to ask you Pri_Kohler about this movie I watched earlier this year called The man who copied or Homem Que Copiava, O. I think it was done in Brazil. It was such a different and bizarre movie. It was on our world channel SBS a few months ago and it was really good. There was a twist at the end-story wise- and I loved it! It was really sweet at the end but it had a really bizarre chain of events which followed!! I hadn't heard of this movie before. I love that the actors weren't super-beautiful models. They just looked "ordinary". I found that despite the sad themes, the twist at the end was lovely. Have you seen it? Was it commercially successful? How accurate do you think it was to the lifestyles etc??

It's very good! I watched last year in Rio Cinema Festival and it was my favourite one (I watched another 15-20 movies... including Crash, but Breakfast... was the only one people applauded!) I hope you get the chance to watch it! I'm sure there're a lot of australian and other movies that don't get here in Brazil too... the last australian I saw was Little Fish (Cate and Hugo are just :thud:).

Yeah, it's a brazilian movie indeed. Jorge Furtado, the director, is really good and very creative, he writes his movies (and others') too. About the movie, I saw it 3 years ago, so I don't remember a lot... but I love the cast! Lázaro Ramos is so talented and Leandra Leal acts since she was so young... she always picks good roles! I don't recall all the details, but the movie was a little fantastic... it's not that easy to fake money (even in Brazil) and the chances a good guy like André (Ramos) get in that kind of business are quite remote... well, I wouldn't take the lifestyles in a serious way... but Brazil is a huge country... and people are really creative when they are broke... Schemes are common, but I think that a character like André wouldn't have the guts to do one! Well, I'll watch it again, so I may give a better opinion ;) If you really wanna see a good brazilian movie, I would go for Behind the Sun (from director Walter Salles - with Rodrigo Santoro, our future losty! It's just poetic!!! My second favourite brazilian movie!), To the Left of the Father (from Luiz Fernando Carvalho - my favourite brazilian movie - the cast is impossible! But it's a very slow film, very contemplative, so... you gotta have patience... there was no script, the used only the book in which is based, so the vocabulary is quite difficult too, the photography is one of the best!) and Desmundo (from Alain Fresnot, the story takes place in a time when Brazil was still Portugal's colony. The acting is great! Simone Spoladore, my favourite brazilian young actress is so good! Osmar Prado, who usually plays funny roles, is the villain... you'll hate him forever! And Caco Ciocler is great as usual! It's a very sad story... It's like, I'm not comparing, but the mood is similar to The Name on the Rose (the dark durty athmosphere... you know?). Which australian movies you'd recomend?

It is an underrated movie! You're about the 7th person in my life I have met to have seen it. I don't even remember it being in the cinemas:p . Did you hear about the second one they made? "Cube 2: Hypercube" I have yet to see it anywhere here in Australia so I may look around online. However, I don't think it'd be any good, just a feeling.

Well, considering that Vincenzo Natali, the original director, had nothing to do with it, I don't think it would be good in the sense that it didn't create what the original did and whether what was revealed to be behind the Cube, was the intention of Natali. Though, most people don't like Hypercube or Cube Zero, for that matter.

But "Cube" is always going to be an exceptional film, considering the budget that was used to create it.

The Life of David Gale - We watched this movie in my Public Speaking class because a lot of people were doing persuasive speeches on capitol punishment. And at the last five seconds of the movies, we were all starring at the screen with our jaws touching the floor. I believe I shouted, "Oh My God!"
Secret Window It's Stephan King. What else can I say?
The Saw Movies The killer all along was ... yeah ... I didn't een expect much out of the second movie. I didn't think they would be able to top it, but they did. And I can't wait to see part three.

I'm sure there're a lot of australian and other movies that don't get here in Brazil too... the last australian I saw was Little Fish (Cate and Hugo are just :thud:).
Yes you are right! That movie was so good. Intense movies get me. And yes, Cate and Hugo are fantastic. At first I didn't think they'd be able to get Australian "suburbia" right, but they did. And it was very believable. They both won the AFI (Australian Film Awards) for lead actor and actress.
Well, I'll watch it again, so I may give a better opinion ;)
Thanks. That’s the thing with foreign movies. I watch them and I really like them and then there’s nobody to talk to about them! And it’s really hard to look it up on the net because it’s either in a different language or it’s not that well-known…Thanks very much. I know movies aren’t that accurate in lifestyles, I thought I’d ask anyway. Good to know that “schemes are common” in Brazil. It was good to see the urban side of the Brazil too. The twist was the sweetest though! She actually liked him from the beginning!
If you really wanna see a good brazilian movie, I would go for Behind the Sun It's just poetic!!!
To the Left of the Father (from Luiz Fernando Carvalho - my favourite brazilian movie - the cast is impossible! But it's a very slow film, very contemplative, so... you gotta have patience... there was no script, the used only the book in which is based, so the vocabulary is quite difficult too, the photography is one of the best!) and
Desmundo (from Alain Fresnot, the story takes place in a time when Brazil was still Portugal's colony. The acting is great! Simone Spoladore, my favourite brazilian young actress is so good! Osmar Prado, who usually plays funny roles, is the villain... you'll hate him forever! And Caco Ciocler is great as usual! It's a very sad story... It's like, I'm not comparing, but the mood is similar to The Name on the Rose (the dark durty athmosphere... you know?).
Wow. That’s a list. Thanks for posting those:) . I try to broaden the types of movies I watch, geographically speaking. You have a really good taste in movies so I'll keep these in mind!
Which australian movies you'd recomend?Good question. You mentioned Little Fish already. Moulin rouge, Somersault, Ten Canoes (it’s about our Native people, very moving). Oh! And Muriel’s Wedding! I can’t think of any off the top of my head. Does The Piano count? Ooh, in keeping with our big twist thread, Lantana is another one. It's another Australian movie I reccommend. It has Anthony LaPaglia (You may know him from "Without a Trace" and Kerry Armstrong. She is such a graceful lady. Really underrated here though. My personal favourite Australian film is Cosi. It's about mental patients who decide to put on a show about Cosi Fan Tutte It's got a more serious and underlying message though. It wasn't very successful so it'll be hard to find.

So now you're the 8th person I know to have watched Cube.

Yeah, I said I had a feeling Cube Zero and Hypercube would not be any good because the original director was not behind them. Yeah, Natali - the original director - made a short film which actually explains the purpose of the Cube but he destroyed it, vowing to never ever reveal what the Cube is all about. I love it when creative people get like that:muwaha: . Like it's their little creation. It's brilliant.

I'm sorry for taking a little long to answer you... this week was crazy at university! So,... thank you for your list of australian movies! I hope I get them here or in the Internet... I watched Muriel's Wedding, but a long time ago, so, I don't remember most of the film... I remember Toni Collette (Am I right?), but that is all! Moulin Rouge , interesting choice! I remember that when I first saw it I thought it was too much, you know... a little exagerated... but, then again, it's a musical! And a Baz Luhrmann one, so... I love Jim Broadbent's acting! The Piano! What a movie! I watched when I was very young and I was quite impressed by the mood... dark and wet, you know? If you like this one, you'll love Desmundo (the Brazilian one I put on my list). Guess what? I just watched Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain! I'm in love with Mathieu Kassovitz! Yes I agree with what you said about Moulin Rouge. At first, I swear I got the biggest headache. But as the movie progressed, I actually cried. And yes, I LOVE musicals. I remember when it came out, Yahoo had a rating of 0, but a month later, I visited the site and it had a 5 rating.
You watched Amelie? Yes! Fantastic movie. It's like no other movie I've seen! The colours and sets are so amazing. It's so sweet. And yes Mathieu Kassovitz, I love Nino:love: I love this movie.

In the trivia section of IMDb says that the crew cleaned the walls and floor leaving every location without trash or graffiti (sp?) to increase the sensation of fantasy... works for me! A friend of mine told me that the movie is a mix of various french tales, so it's kind of fantastic on purpose! I love it too! ;)
In the Mood for love I have not heard of it. Is it a drama? Action? And once again, I 'll look it up!:D
Fa yeung nin wa is the original title and it's a drama-romance... the most beautiful love story! Requires a lot of your imagination... The movie took 18 months to get complete and there was no script! The soundtrack is just amazing! The instrumental pieces and Nat King Cole singing spanish songs... just perfect! Maggie Cheung acting! Here's the plot:
Set in Hong Kong, 1962, Chow Mo-Wan is a newspaper editor who moves into a new building with his wife. At approximately the same time, Su Li-zhen, a beautiful secretary and her executive husband also move in to the crowded building. With their spouses often away, Chow and Li-zhen spend most of their time together as friends. They have everything in common from noodle shops to martial arts. Soon, they are shocked to discover that their spouses are having an affair. Hurt and angry, they find comfort in their growing friendship even as they resolve not to be like their unfaithful mates.
Kar-Wai continues the tale of his male character Chow Mo-wan (played by the amazing Tony Leung) in 2046, another must-see, but I prefer In The Mood for Love . If you have chance, also look for Eros, three stories about erotic love, each segment has a different director and staff. The first is by Steven Soderbergh (with Robert Downey Jr.!!), the 2nd by Michelangelo Antonioni and the 3rd by Kar-Wai. An american, an european and an asian! The Hand, Kar-Wai segment, it's my favourite, of course!

I think Closer is full of great quotes. I bought the screenplay publication by Patrick Marber straight after I saw the movie - I loved the dialogue THAT much! The characters are so awesome. I bought the DVD! It's one of my favourite of last year too, mostly because of Natalie Portman's character! Alice/Jane is just the perfect human to be analysed! Damien Rice song is also great! I love his work and his amazing backing vocal, Lisa Hannigan! Closer dialogues are great... at first... after watching the film 3 times, I started to think some of the quotes are quite presumptious... Can't really explain why, but the hate fish cause they piss in the see... so do children irritates me now... so does the frog/toad argument! But I still love examinig Nat's character! And Clive... this man knows what he's doing! He's so perfect for the part! His strong voice, sarcasm tone! Everything fits so perfect! He has my favourite line! I could't breath after I heard it for the first time! At the same time I remembered one of my Biology classes when my teacher said the human heart looked like a fist... and an atlete heart was a little bigger due to the trainning... I was so little... maybe 11 or 12, but this curiosity glued on my mind!

 Yes. We sang his praises early in this thread. Zodiac should be good, but scary. Thrilling scary. The odd thing is, I just watched this movie (Seven) today on DVD and you brought it up.:blank: It's a very original story and I enjoyed it. The end was intense. Kevin Spacey owned the part in the back of the car when he was explaining the previous murders towards the end. That guy is amazing.
In the trivia section of IMDb says that the crew cleaned the walls and floor leaving every location without trash or graffiti (sp?) to increase the sensation of fantasy... works for me! A friend of mine told me that the movie is a mix of various french tales, so it's kind of fantastic on purpose! I love it too! ;):D Yes! I read that one piece of trivia as well! I love the detail some movies have. Something about his movies are so detailed. Your friend is right because Jean-Pierre Jeunet said that he had the stories in his head for years. I even recall him saying decades. Fantastic movie.

That's why I don't usually watch my favourite movies too much or I risk the chance of getting sick of it! It is a little silly thing I believe in. Clive Owen is such a presence on screen. He is so amazing. I liked him in Sin City as Dwight. I think I read that Clive Owen played the character of Dan in the Closer stage version in London. That to me is VERY hard to picture. I can't see him as Dan. The character of Dan makes me sick.

Hey, I was watching "Batman Begins" today and suddenly (okay, it wasn't an accident at all! I couldn't contain myself while looking at Christian Bale... had to recall all his movies) I remembered of another great movie with a huge twist! "The Machinist"!! A really difficult film to watch... but Bale's acting is just amazing! I believe he is the most comited actor of the industry, he just give his own body away for it! Read IMDb's trivia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361862/trivia)for that movie now!!! His 63-pound weight loss is said to be a record for any actor for a movie role.

I have The Machinist on DVD but I have not seen it. I bought it a while ago and have never found the time to watch it. I do that with many DVDs I buy. I just simply have no time. But now that I know you like it, I must watch it soon. On a scale of 10, what do you give it? Yeah, I read about his weight loss for the role. That is amazing. Christian Bale is good. The first movie I saw him in was American Psycho many years ago. I had read the book before the movie and thought Christian Bale as Patrick was really good.

Back to Batman Begins, Christian Bale was amazing. When the movie was in production I didn't think he would be any good because I couldn't picture it. But I was pleased. I love what he said about Christopher Nolan "bringing dignity back to the Dark Night". I liked the whole movie. It had Michael Caine, Liam Neeson and Cillian Murphy. Great cast I thought.

You gotta see it! As much as I watch a great quantity of movies, it's impossible to guess what's gonna happen... what's going on... the whole thing is just so confusing and then bam! Again, it's not very easy to watch it, specially because of the state os Bale... the man is skin&bones... But I'd give it 8/10 for the movie and 10/10 for the totally inexpected twist! I'm sure you've seen Bale before American Psycho! Have you seen Little Women? He's the neighbor! Perhaps, Shaft (horrible movie, btw... I promissed myself I'd never watch a Samuel Jackson's movie again... that after Country of My Skull ...) ...or... Empire of The Sun! Come on, he's the little boy! This is my favourite Spielberg's movie! Bale's acting is overwhelming! The soundtrack is just... :thud: Do you recall it? And you can see so much of American "Patrick" Psycho in Bruce Wayne... his playboy side... I cannot imagine a better actor to portray this kind of dual life!

I agree, the cast is almost perfect... I would never pick Katie Holmes... she's good in Wonder Boys and Pieces of April, but lately... I hate her work in Thank You For Smoking (that line "Kids, don't do drugs! Smoke cigarettes!" makes me want to vomit... and the reason is not the line at all, but the way Holmes says it)... Cillian Murphy is really something! I'm addicted to his work lately... and Michael Caine!!! He's my favourite actor and a perfect choice for the role of Alfred!

Yeah Shaft was a really unnecessary remake. However, Samuel L Jackson is pretty amazing. I loved him in Pulp Fiction. I think everyone loves him in that. Do you really hate him that much to not see any other of his movies?

Have we mentioned Fight Club? I remember we talked about David Fincher. Other movies with a twist...Oh! My dad mentioned China town by Roman Polanski when I talked to him about movies with a twist. And Angel Heart. Seen any of them? What's your rating if you have?

Best twists ever:

Memento: I'm not going to ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen it! GO SEE IT!! It is sooo awesome! Best twist ever!

From Hell: That Ian Holm's character was the ripper. Sadly I recognised his "evil" voice because it sounded the same as in Lord of the Rings so I guessed it way in advance. Also the whole royal conspiracy was such an original take on the whole Ripper history.

Zodiac should be good, but scary. Thrilling scary.

i watched this last night. thankfully i had a lot of downtime since the movie was like 2 hours and 45 minutes, sheesh. really good movie, though! i remember seeing previews and expecting somewhat of a scary thriller or something, but it's barely even a thriller. the entire time i was hoping the bastard would be caught, so needless to say i was rather disappointed with the ending.

If you have'nt seen OldBoy then you must, it's incredible.

Min-sik Choi as Oh Dae Su and Ji-tae Yu as Woo-jin Lee provide brilliant performances, their scenes together will stick in your head.

Not to mention one of the coolest fight scenes of all, the infamous corridor one.

David Fincher made some good twists in Se7en and Fight Club.

M. Night Shyamalan movies, always. The "Saw" movies have incredible twists as well.

One of my favourite movies of all time, "American Beauty", had a nice little twist at the end as well.

I would agree with the M. Night Shyamalan thing, except a lot of his twists end up being really lame (I won't spoil the end of Signs, but that was... yeah). I thought The Village was one of his best, as far as plot intricacy is concerned.

Now, as for my three, in no particular order...

The Illusionist

Usual Suspects, The Game, and The Sixth Sense would all be on my "tops" list for twist endings. A coupe that i haven't seen mentioned here are:

The Spanish Prisoner
Session 9
