My personal favorite author is Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club. If you liked the movie pick up any one of his books (except for Haunted).

My favorites are Invisible Monsters, Choke and Survivor (in that order). They're sort of black comedy fiction but they will defiitely have an impact on you and make you think a little.

If you like those then I also suggest Dermaphoria by Craig Clevenger and the Phineas Poe series by William Christopher Baer.

If you're in the mood for a good cry, I'd go for "P.S. I Love You." It's so sweet but very sad. My favorite books are by Philippa Gregory. "The Other Boleyn Girl" is my favorite, and I'm reading "The Constant Princess" now. They're excellent.

Well, i think any of the H.G. Wells books are good to read, but i don't know what you think of H.G. Wells.
If you want to take a deeper perspective into the world, and our lives, i would read Whitley Strieber's own life-story "Communion", but i don't know if any of you guys heard of him, or will even believe his story, but it does get you thinking on why we are really here.

To Kill A Mockingbird is definitely a novel that will make you think, well worth reading.

I'd also recommend Memoirs of a Geisha and the Noughts and Crosses trilogy by Malorie Blackman (basically written for teenagers, but I think they'd still be a pretty good read for adults too).

For lighter reading, PS, I Love You is great (but really sad!) (can't wait for the movie though, Hilary Swank is going to be great :D )

And I'm still attempting to read Lord of the Rings, but from what I have read, it's great literature.

My favorite books are by Philippa Gregory. "The Other Boleyn Girl" is my favorite, and I'm reading "The Constant Princess" now. They're excellent.

I love Philippa Gregory! It's rare to find someone else who really does. The Other Boleyn Girl is definitely her best novel. Have you read the Wideacre series? They are pretty good. The first one is probably the worst, which is why some people say that they have difficulty reading the whole trilogy, but I found them enjoyable. Also, have you read The Queen's Fool? I liked that one a lot as well.

As far as recommendations go, I enjoyed The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Miracle in the Andes by Nando Parrado is an amazing book. I highly recommend it, even to those who don't like non-fiction. It's about the rugby team that crashed in the Andes mountains in 1972. The different challenges they faced to survive and their will to live is simply astounding. Definitely the greatest book I've read up to date.

The Firm or The Client by John Grisham are really gripping, well-written and interesting books in my opinion.

Beloved by Toni Morrison-a really complex book but it is so good. Its about a women who has to learn to confront her past in order to face her future. It is set post-civil war and involves the horrors of slavery and its effect on people even after it is over. It deals alot with personal shadow and if we are able to conquer it or if we will let it conquer us.
Dear John by Nicholas Sparks- what can I say its a tearjerker
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens- great symbolism and you love the characters

'The Tea Rose' and 'The Winter Rose' by Jennifer Donnelly - absolutely fantastic historical fiction.

'A Room with a View' by E. M Forster - gentle modernist novel, with likeable characters and excellent symbolism.

'A Farewell to Arms' - Ernest Hemmingway. My favourite modernist novel. Subtle, moving, fantastically vivid. It's a great read.

'I Capture the Castle' - Dodie Smith. A study on family, 1930s society and the differences between Brits and Americans told by a seventeen year old girl. Cassandra and her family live in the depths of Suffolk in a half-ruined castle, when they gain a new landlord. American Simon and his brother Neil soon become the objects of Cassandra and her sister Rose's affection. I cannot recommend this book enough.

'Pride and Prejudice' - Jane Austen. Sweet, and really, really funny.

I loove Eragon and Eldest! :) Although I was reading Eldest and I lost the book when I was right in the middle... I'm going to the store tomorrow to buy it again. :) I hope the third one comes out soon...

For fantasy, I like George RR Martin and his Song of Ice and Fire books, and Robert Jordan... but he died a few weeks back so I don't know if his last book is still being published. :(

I'm also looking for other fantasy books to buy... preferably with hot/scary villains and a bit of romance in the mix. :D And dragons are always a plus.

Is Terry Goodkind any good? Or Terry Pratchett? I always mix those two up.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It's absolutely amazing. :faint:

I can't put it down. There's so many great quotes from that book:

"Sometimes, I look outside, and I think that a lot of other people have seen this snow before.
Just like I think that a lot of other people have read those books before.
And listened to those songs.
I wonder how they feel tonight."

"I walked over to the hill where we used to go and sled. There were a lot of little kids there. I watched them flying. Doing jumps and having races. And I thought that all those little kids are going to grow up someday. And all of those little kids are going to do the things that we do. And they will all kiss someone someday. But for now, sledding is enough. I think it would be great if sledding were always enough, but it isn't."

"I think it was the first time in my life I ever felt like I looked "good". Do you know what I mean? That nice feeling when you look in the mirror, and your hair's right for the first time in your life? I don't think we should base so much on weight, muscles, and a good hair day, but when it happens, it's nice. It really is."

"And in that moment, I swear we were infinite"

I've just read Masters of Doom: How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed Pop Culture by David Kushner and it amazed me. Anybody looking to get into the computer and video game industry must read this. Even people who don't play video games will enjoy this book.

The book is a retrospective of computer game programmers John Carmack and John Romero (2 of the men behind such computer games including Commander Keen,Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake.)

The book details both of there childhoods and how they met up. Later, they would go on to form Id Software which is still around in Texas. The book chronicles also follows what happens when Carmack and Remero separated over creative differences.

Basically, these two men became icons for computer gamers in the 1990s and what they developed is still a blueprint for computer gaming today.

The book also shows both of there human sides. Just two men who are passionate in creating fun but well crafted computer games.

The book is funny, intelligent, and intriguing.

Wicked, by Gregory Maguire.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n270/Lusweetums/Others/WickedBookCover.jpg

Read it during my vacation, and I have to say it's the best book I've read in years. I wasn't expecting to like it that much (not a fantasy fan, I couldn't get past the first page of The Lord of the Rings), but it's so different from anything I had ever read before! It has a set of amazing, realistic characters that I fell in love with, and it proves that goodness is not always black an white, as well as the intentions behind the actions we consider to be ill-meant. It might be a little too political at times, but the descriptions, the dialogues and the relationships between the characters make up for it.

One of the most amazing books I've read, and definitely my favorite. Should be a new classic, in my opinion. Liesel, the protagonist, is completely easy to relate to. And the narration--by Death--is unique and original. It is a must-read.

I'm currently reading the His Dark Materials trilogy written by Philip Pullman.
it consists of
Northern Lights
The Subtle Knife
and
The Amber Spyglass

If you have seen the movie The Golden Compas... well Northern Lights the the book in which the movie is based on.

I really enjoyed it... I am almost finished The Subtle Knife and I love it! :bawl: & a sniff. Lee and Hester forever! I love you guys!

Just started to read The Time Traveller's Wife which my friend recommended only on page 18 and I think I'm already hooked.
