Who do you like in NASCAR? Even if you're not a fan.

I love Dale Jarrett, Elliott Sadler, Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Casey Mears, Kevin Harvick, and many others

The pole is which drivers can you not stand.

:p I have been watching nascar for a long time. I have been watching it for 8 years. There are 2 drivers that I root for the most are Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. They are who I root for week in and week out. I have other drivers that I follow such as Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, Casey Mears, and some other ones.

I love, love Jeff Gordon and sometimes Earhardt Jr. (my brother and sister adore him, lol).

The one I can't stand is Tony Stewart because he's whiney and has a bad temper.

I've been a Michael Waltrip fan since 1990.

The driver I love to hate is Jeff Gordon. He's always got to blame everything that happens on everyone else. He's got a major attitude problem. Back when he was a rookie, we just figured, hey, he's just a kid, that immature wah-wah attitude will change. Well, that didnt happen. :p

He's not the only one, though. Racing isnt what it used to be. A lot of those young guys out there have big ego problems. Tony Stewart's another big one for that.

Junior started out good, but he's run into some problems himself.

I want to see Mark Martin win, he has been going for 20 years straight, and a great driver the whole time, and he has not yet one the Cup, this is his last year, too.

You can be inconstant and still come off with a win, one or two wins, and some bad luck by the leaders, and anything can happen...

When I started watching NASCAR, Davey Allison was my favorite driver. (Son of Bobby Allison). This was back when ESPN/ABC, TNN, and CBS showed the majority of the races. Back when Rusty Wallace and Dale Earndhardt Sr traded rubber and sheet metal. Back when Winston sponsered the Cup Series and we were still racing at Rockingham aka "The Rock".

Now I like....:w00t: Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Ricky Rudd, Jeff Burton, Kyle Petty, Bobby Labonte, Bill Elliot, Mark Martin, Kevin Harvick, Dale Earndhardt Jr, Juan Pablo Montoya, Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth.

The drivers I love to hate are...:p Kurt Busch, Robby Gordon, Dale Jarrett, Tony Stewart (I have his autograph by the way), Ryan Newman.

Yeah, unfortunatley NASCAR is looking way into making all the cars perform the same these days.:(

What's next, altering a driver's personality?:blank:

No, that would be wrong, but let the crews modify the cars how THEY want to, not by the governing body.

I know! I thought the whole deal was "who could build a better engine" or "who could make their car perform better" rather than make everyone use the same stuff (except crew and car manufacturer.) I mean, you have to have rules and all, but cookie-cutter-cars?

It just doesnt have anything to do with who has the better car anymore (although Toyota's had a rough start), it's who's the better driver. :sigh: Not very exciting anymore.

I know what you're talking about. The Car of Tomorrow is a mixed product. (Not to mention ugly as well.):p Really should smooth out the front bumpers and a smaller wing on the rear. Now, the only differences the cars have are the engine and the manufacturer's sticker on the front and rear. (However, I do like the safety of it.)

Hopefully, NASCAR will be able to turn it around (the cars).

also, I really want the Labor Day weekend race to return to Darlington and bring back Rockingham too.

I don't mind NASCAR going international and building on it's fanbase but the past should be remembered too. Without the likes of Bill France Sr, Bill France Jr, Winston, 76 fuel, and the amazing drivers (Petty, Yarbough, Waltrip, Pearson, Allison, Elliot, Earndhardt, Jarrett, and Roberts, the sport would still be small time.)

I look at each track on the circuit now and I'm suprised to see the increase in grandstands, new surfaces, and the like. (However, Atlanta is still a great track to watch and race at.)

to people wanting to build a motor speedway for NASCAR Busch/Winston racing: Please make a small track with deep banking. Most of the drivers come from small tracks and many people love short track racing.

Exie
09-07-2007, 09:53 AM
 That's something else I'm missing are the short tracks. Wasnt there one or two they've phased out? I cant remember which ones. Even though they really didnt go mostly over, what, 90mph sometimes?, :p they were the most exciting to watch. Especially when passing.

I love the superspeedways, too, but sometimes they're the most boring. :giggle: Round and round and round and round, and no cautions. Oh, wait! Someone threw a soda can on the track.

Races I hate? Road tracks. Boooo-ring! :p

I agree with you on the safety standpoint--also the invention of, whatzitcalled, the HANS device? Nothing like that is foolproof, though. I mean, come on. You're in one of the more dangerous sports, and there are going to be injuries. I dont want it to sound like I dont want the drivers to be safe, but...:sigh:

Well, Richmond is tonight at 7:00PM on ABC. (The rest of the season is on ABC)

Commentators are Rusty Wallace, Andy Petree, and Dr. Jerry Punch. (I miss Benny Parsons:(R.I.P.)

Anyway, another thing that bothers me is the notable abscene of single car teams (Wood Brothers Racing and Robby Gordon Racing still operating today) as well as independent driver/owners.

Most single car operations are gone (Bud Moore, Stavola Brothers, Tristar Racing, Melling, Cal Wells) and now the super-teams are dominating (Hendrick, Richard Childress, Roush Fenway, Joe Gibbs, Ganassi/Sabates).

The last independent driver/owner to win the Winston/Nextel Cup was Alan Kulwicki back in 1992. He was most famous for the "Polish Victory Lap". (Going the opposite way on the track for a victory lap)

You see, the sport is becoming more corporate with each passing year basically making it hard for a single car team to keep up with the multi-car teams.

 I know what you mean. It's gonna end up being a monopoly :p or down to the 2 or 3 biggest ones. :sigh:

^^^Kulwicki. Wow, what a class act he was. Owner/Mechanic/driver. R.I.P. We still miss you Alan.

My favorite NASCAR moment has to be Darlington 2003 in the Spring when Kurt Busch and Ricky Craven were battling it out in the closing laps with Craven winning literally by inches.

The announcers (Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip, Larry McReynolds) were going wild.

Mike Joy: Have you ever?

Darrell Waltrip: No, I never!

No that is how stock car racing is supposed to be. Down to the wire, on your feet, metal to metal, and rubbing is racing.

Atlanta is a more exciting track. (Remember the 1992 Hooters 500 and the 1995-1998 Napa Auto Parts 500? Great races!)

They (ESPN) need to talk Ned Jarrett and Bob Jenkins out of retirement so they can do commentary. (I"ll always miss Benny Parsons.:()

It took them like an hour to run the last 30 laps of the race because there were so many wrecks! :faint:

One thing that sucked was everyone who had trouble or got in a wreck was real positive about the situation except when Michael Waltrip cut a tire and evidently hit Elliot Sadler. Sadler says something jerky like, "I dont know what his problem is but evidently he thinks Talladega is the only race he can win" or some junk like that. That was SO uncalled-for. What the hell are you going to do if you cut a tire, you moron? I was very impressed with the Car of Tomorrow's debut at Talladega? What a finish!

I feel bad for Michael Waltrip. He was trying to race for the win and had a great car, but the elements worked against him near the end. (I like Michael ever since he started driving a Jim Mattei owned # 7 Phillips Light Bulbs Chevrolet Monte Carlo back in 1999. I was glad that Dale Sr. hired him as a driver later for his Napa Chevrolet.) Michael is a great guy and as funny as his older brother Darrell.

I wouldn't worry about Sadler. He is just a frustrated young driver with a new team (before teaming up with Everham, he was with the Wood Brothers and Robert Yates), but talented as well. Unfortunately for him, he has bad luck and somewhat of a short temper. He (Sadler) has not had such a banner year and I believed what he said about Michael was uncalled for. (Elliot, don't hate on Michael, go after Goodyear so they can make a more durable tire.):D

That finish and that last lap pass was AMAZING! Jeff Gordon only lead 1/3 of a lap all day, but it was the one that counted the most. (I thought Dave Blaney in the Caterpillar Toyota was going to beat both of them on the final stretch.)

:giggle: Funny you should say that...Actually, you could say MW has been "the" driver I've been pulling for since around 1990...I just wanted to pull for one of the underdogs, and he started doing really well, then he won the Daytona 500, but he kinda disappeared off the radar this year. I just dont tell many people he's who I root for because he just doesnt do all that well compared to a lot of the other drivers. Heh! That one vote on the poll up there must have been me. :giggle:

LOL! I dont remember him driving a Philips car. I remember the Pennzoil car, the Citgo car, and the NAPA car, as well as his Busch cars. *shrug* I'm sure I missed something somewhere. :p

I know all these young guys are hotheaded. Sadler just had to go and ruin a good team-spirit race, you know? :sigh:

Oh, that last lap was awesome. I called my mom when I got home and told her that Jeff won and that that was the only lap he led...she was not happy. LOL! It's amazing how well he did, considering his starting position was way back, AND he got that pass-thru penalty. That caution right after that saved him. I'm glad Jimmie Johnson finished 2nd, though. :)

It's nice to see a lot of these "new" drivers get up there in the front (I say "new" because they may very well not be new...I just havent seen much racing lately. :() Montoya did VERY well yesterday. (Then again, you cant help but do well when half the field is out of the race. LOL!)

But then again maybe not. I do know the old engines used to burn feet because of the exhaust being right under the gas pedel. It's a 60's design.
