I'm starting to think there should be a computer help thread...
Anyway, hopefully someone will have an answer to this. I'm getting a new computer tomorrow, and I';m really psyched about it (just becuase I love new stuff) but there are a program I have on my current computer that I don't have the disc for anymore, but I want to put it on my new computer.
Is there a way to copy the file or whatever so that I can put it on my new computer with everything working fine? (Just to let you know, the program is Photoshop Elements 3.0, incase that helps)
Oh and just to let you know... please don't use confusing computer language, lol, I'm not exactly... well the look on my face may be :eh: so dumb things down for me :D

Do you have a DVD/CD burner? if you do then just burn the Photoshop Elements 3.0 folder onto a DVD/CD (the folder would probably be: My Computer>Local Disk( C: )>Program Files>Photoshop Elements 3.0)
Also a program will generaly run better if it has registry keys, you're not going to have registry keys with this method. There is a way to fix that but it is long, tedious, and dangerous. I would try to borrow the disk from someone or try to get a good deal on it buy buying it used, this way your would have the registry keys.

Thanks, i'll try that :D if not, I'll try and get my hands on the disc again... it might be a little difficult though (we borrowed it off a friend).

i'm not sure about Elements, but sometimes alot of programs have this "repair" button you can use to basicly re-install, maybe you can copy that......this is a really fat chance though, considering the installer needs to be there

If you can't copy it, then the only thing I can suggest is to download a trial version and find a crack so that you don't have to pay for it....I know its wrong but...we all do it.

problem solved yet?
I'm too getting a new computer any day now. And moving some files from this computer to that new one. I was thinking that I'll upload them to rapidshare or filefront and just download them to the new computer. Easy and simple.

You cannot actually burn the files into a CD/DVD and poy them into your new PC. If it is just an *.exe file you can copy it and execute it. The best thing is too get the CD back...

And whatever you do don't forget your antivirus and antispyware software.
I know alot of people disagree, but I have found the combination of Norton Antivirus or Internet Security (I can't afford both at the mo!), Spybot Search and Destroy (the original), Spyware Blaster (upfront protection), and Adware SE covers all areas perfectly.
As my laptop is online anything up to 12 hours in a day I run a full scan by each of those systems once a week. All but Norton are free and though it can slow down your machine a bit I have found it to be the most reliable, suported anti-virus software on the market. Best £30 I ever spent.
Assuming you have a Mac, all of these have versions for it.

Yeah but you can copy the files to a disk, and then copy them to the hard drive of the new computer and run the *.exe from your HD.
About anti-virus software: I have found AVG (www.grisoft.com/) to be one of the best anti-virus programs and Zone Alarm (www.zonelabs.com) to be one of the best firewalls, they're updated frequently and blocked/detected more intrusions/viruses than any other security software, and the best part is that they have free versions. I have had very bad expierences with Norton AV, it ate up all my resourses and never detected as many viruses as AVG.

there is an *.exe file for executing the program once installed and aa setp *.exe program. You need the setup one to run the programon another compuer.
and bashveankI agree with you, AVG is also one of the best anti-trojan viruses

I'm sorry, i'm pretty annoying with my "help threads" today, but i've been trying all afternoon to convert .vob files (DVD files) to .avi to be able to import the movie into windows movie maker so i can make clips out of it.
I tried so many different programs like DVDshrink, Dr. DivX and many others i can't remember the names of, but either none of them worked or they were too hard to use. :(
Does anyone know a program i could use kind of easily to convert .vob files format to .avi? I will be forever thankful!

It depends on how you want to get your TV, you can get your TV via the internet, witch is a terrible method because you will get very low quality video and it = will suck up your bandwidth. The other method is using a TV tuner card (http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=TV%20tuner%20card&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&percentage_served=100&sa=N&tab=wf), that's the method I would reccomend.

Hello,
I so totally hate compters right now and im in a mega strop over them, basically i want to transfer my lost episodes onto a dvd disc so i can watch them on my dvd player. Oh it seems so simple written out like that but wait a minute it isnt oh noo because computers like to have errors !
Ive downloaded nero burning software but once ive made the dvd menu etc, it just doesnt move when it comes to to downloading/burning process. I acknowledge the fact that if you are reading this i have probably confused the hell out of you, but if anyone knows anything/or can help me/or can help me from getting stresed over this i would be ever so grateful. :D

I would not recommend discussing this on the board as you're talking piracy issues here (MPAA = Piracy Police). Might get you (or the board) in some trouble.
Do a google search for DVD burning and look for the forums/FAQs related to that - there's tons of stuff out there.

you may want to try the episode downloads forum. here there is a thread on how to make LOST DVDs from downloaded episodes. Ask anything and I'll guarantee you'll get a response soon. the thread is here:

The episodes you downloaded are more than likely not the right format to be put onto a DVD that you watch on a TV set.
Unless it's an MPEG2 it ain't gonna work. Nero probably can't make it the right format.
Either download the right format, download the right software to make the right format or buy the DVDs.

ok, well i do a virus scan on my comp, and the main ones all are in the registry. even if i delete every single one, these ones will re appear when i do another search. it says they are located in
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{872DC836-DD9F-
etc etc
and another is
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft etc
anyone know how i can find these and shut them down? where is this HKEY thing?

Perhaps go to Add/Remove programs, and look around closely in there, make sure no foreign programs are there don't belong on your computer, sometimes you'll see things from weird websites actually in there on your harddrive. I had a similar problem with my old laptop, I wish I could tell you how I fixed it, but me and my mother (who taught computer classes) messed around with it and got rid of it.
tabjai
03-31-2006, 08:20 PM
Actually it can't. Lost episodes are in *.avi format compressed with a high quality in Xvid codec. You need a DVD that reads the Xvid codec on data CDs/DVDs. I'd recommend paying a visit to ED and ask for help in the thread I've provided above.

An HKey is an entry in your computers registry, basicaly the registry is where all of your important information is stored, kind of like an information kiosk at an amusement park. To edit your registry press "Start" and then click "Run" in the window that opens type "regedit" (without the quotes) after that it should be fairly strait forward.
I would not reccomend editing your registry if you don't know what you're doing, it can mess up your computer very badly if you screw up, and it's very easy to screw up. If you must edit the registy I would reccomend backing it up using the "Import" feature on the file menu and keeping your backup on a CD or USB key.

I have a question. My laptop is dead. When I turn it on, it turns off. I think it needs the motherboard replaced. Anyhoot, would it be legal for me to install Photoshop Elements even though it's registered to my laptop? My laptop is dead so it shouldn't make a difference, right? And if/when my laptop is fixed, I'll remove it off this computer, cuz my parents are crazy about saving memory. Does anyone know if that would be okay?

I really don't thinnk you'll be able to replace the motherboard in your laptop. it will probably be as expensive as buying a cheap one now. :blank: Perhaps it is in hibernation mode, and you have hibernated it many times. Another option would be to uninstall Windows and reinstall it to see what happens. You have your windows CD right? :blank:

Sometime next month I'm going to be putting together a new computer, I've never done that before so I'm probably going to make some fatal mistake and make the word explode. Here are my current specs:
CPU
---------
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ 2.4GHz
Motherboard
---------
ABit KN8 NVIDIA nForce4
Memory
---------
Corsair XMS 2GB
GPU
---------
eVGA e-GeForce 7900 GT 256MB
Hard Drive
---------
2x DiamondMax Plus 200GB
Does anybody see any terrible mistake I've made? the only thing that I'm concerned about is that my Motherboard is a bad one. If I'm ok so far then I'd like to know how powerfull of a power supply I'm going to need, as well as cooling. I also don't have a clue as to who makes good RAID0 controllers.

I really don't get you there. The specs you posted are your current ones? :blank: Or are they the ones you want. Your mobo is great. :D RAM Memory is also cool but what is their clock speed? (It it is under 333 MHz don't bother) And I'd search for Kingston but Corsair is good. ;)The graphics card is also cool but your processor ain't. :blank: With 2.4 GHz you will hardly be able to maintain the GPU, the RAM and whatever games you play with that cool card. :(
Speaking about the PSU, what do you have now? Your "current" GPU needs about 400 W. I'd recommend buying 500W. If you're planning running you cards in SLI, then you'd neeed about 700 W (unlike the 980 needed for the 7900 GTX).
Overall, you current PC doesn't nees an upgrade anytime soon (except the processor). And BTW, what is your L2 caché memory? If it is under 1 MB I can't understand how the hell you're running a 7900 GT.

Sorry I wasn't realy clear, those are the parts that I'm planning on buying.
The RAM speed is 400Mhz.
Isn't an AMD 2.4GHz way faster then an Intell 2.4GHz?
I belive the L2 cache is 1MB.
My current choice for power is an Okia 450W ATX w/80mm Fan and my case is a Thermaltake SHARK. Are those good choices or are they going to cause the island to expolde?

Ok, it is just that is said current specs so I wasn't sure. I'd recommend buying a 3.4 or larger processor. 3.2 as minimum these days (there are up to 3.8, at least in Intel). The thing is that you could use all what you have with the 2.4 processor and if you want to game (since you have a pretty good Graphics card :rolleyes), it won't be enough to support everything at once :( . And if you want to economize to buy a larger processor, get rid of one of the hard drives. 200GB usually is more than enough mor most people, even gamers. I have an Intel P4 2.66 GHz processor on my other PC and an Seagate 80 GB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive and I'm doing just fine, ;)

Yeah, I've read multiple places that an AMD Athlon 64 at 2.4GHz is equivalent to an Intel Pentium 4 3.4Ghz or so. The fastest chip that AMD makes is a 2.8Ghz so I'd imagine that what I read is about right, I can't imagine that AMD is a whole GHz behind Intel.
Also I checked the L2 Cache and saw that it is 512KB+512KB (it's a dual core) should I be worried? a 1MB+1MB L2 Cache would boost the price up about $100...
I've fine tuned my specs and this is what I'll probably buy unless there's something terrible problem that you spot.

bashveank, that would be better but still, since you killed a hard drive, a larger caché would be cool. i didn't worry about my caché when i built my compuer in oct 03 and I now regret it. I have my 2.66 GHz P$ with 512 KB L2 caché. Anyway, games might not run properly since it is 2.4 GHz. for me, there is not toomuch difference between Athlon and Intel but I'm sticking with intel. And the fact that it is double core is not too good nowadays (perhaps in about 6 months) since it is not a fully tested and publibly approved technology. it is said that it does things much better but for now I'd stick with P4 or a single-core.

Thanks for your help, I think I'll stick with what I have though, I'll probably get a larger L2 Cache though. Are you sure that an AMD 2.4 is too slow though? cause on a few reviews AMD 2.4 gave out the same preformace as an Intel 3.4

I wouldn't base myself on reviews :blank:. You can't actually compare two processors without usgin them simoultaneously. At least perfectly. it is said that AMD is better for gaming but I'm not so sure. 2.4 GHz processors are pretty outdated, and I believe i have seen people in the FileFront forums with AMD processors which are over 3 GHz.

Based on the AMD website (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_9485_9488%5E10756,00.html) I'm prety sure that the fastest AMD has is 2.8.

Exact thing I need help with!
Are you trying to convert it into .mov, .m4a, or a .wma?(or wva...or mva...)
All the clips I can find are .wmm or .zip and I "don't have an application that can run this file" when I "unzip" the file.

A lot of times I have a hard time seeing things on my monitor. The images are too dark. (Like some sigs/bans, or pictures from Lost-Media (dark scenes from the show).
Mostly the colors look fine. Just certain dark media files.
When I try to show people my monitor, they don't understand, they think the color is great. But they don't come on this MB, and see the probs I have here sometimes.
Could it be something to do with the settings on my computer? If I go into the 'Display Property' , then the 'Settings', it's set on:
[High Color] 16 Bit
But there's also the options of: 16 Colors, 256 Colors, True Color (32 Bits).
If I changed that to something else, would I be able to see dark images (especially night/jungle scenes from Lost? Or would I just mess up the comp.?)
Hope this makes sense, I'm really confused though. :giggle:

Also, I'm having problems with my red color. Any time I write someone in red, like in an art program, and load it up somewhere, the color comes in all blury. Red's the only color that does this:confused:
OK, in total:
1. Restarts randomly
2. No sound
3. Freezes, and then I have to disconnect the plug and reconnect it in a different socket
4. Spyware upon spyware, but I just go onto different accounts

What is the format of the files you're wanting to use? .wmv?
If so, you will need a video converter software like FX video converter. (http://www.brothersoft.com/dvd_video/video_conversion/fx_video_converter_20561.html) This is only a demo though. I don't really know any fair programs that will allow you to convert .wmv to .avi or mpeg files for free.
Kind
restarts randomly
You might have a problem with the power-supply. don't wait until the power-supply burns your motherboard. Turn it off, unplug it and: off to the shop to get it fixed. This might also be why you have some sound issue.
You may also have over heating issues. Does your computer get really hot? Is your fan working properly?
Also, XP by default is set to automatically restart on crashes so many times a BSOD will be missed due to this. If it keeps happening i would suggest turning off the auto restart feature so that you can see what the BSOD says and hopefully that will shed some light on your problem.

I did that but it doesn't look any different. Is it just that I have an old crappy monitor? lol
(I think I bought this computer in 1999 at Circuit City. Other than the random 'darkness' of images, which is only noticed by me on this comp, it's been pretty good.)
The original monitor fizzed out after a day or two, they replaced it with this one (a different model than the original). They said it was the same quality as the other one (maybe that's the problem... )

Hey guys,
Have been a lurker here for a long time, but now I really need some help...
My computer (I have Windows XP) worked perfectly fine yesterday, but when I tried to start it this morning, I got a message "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER." Like, WTF??? I have no idea what that means or what I am supposed to do.
My exams are about to start and literally everything I need is on my computer - I can't afford to lose it all :( . I am totally freaking out.
Anyone know what to do? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Spoon
PS: My apologies if this was posted in the wrong Forum!

1 : simple solution. Be careful not to bang your head too hard against the wall when you read. There is a diskette in your drive
2 : more difficult : Your BIOS settings have been altered, you should reboot, press "Del" several time until the BIOS menu appears, and check boot order "A, CD-Rom, then C"
3 : we need more explications if it is not 1 or 2. But be quiet, there is a way to keep your data.

Thanks for your reply - I really appreciate it!!
I'm afraid there's no floppy disk inserted, so that can't be it.
And my BIOS settings haven't been altered as far as I can tell.
Something else must be going on. I've called in a computer expert to have a look - hopefull he'll be able to find out more... I'm only too glad I printed my biggest paper yesterday...

It is not the wrong forum, although there's a whole thread dedicated to computer problems. ;)
Anyway, for your problem:
Do you have BCoD? (Blue Screen of Death) Do you also get a beeping noise?
If so, your boot might be corrupted. Do you have your Windows CD? Do you know how to use the Recovery Console? A boot disk will only get you to a certain point, unless it is created automatically for your system. The system disk they're talking about should be in your windows disc.
But if you don't know much about computers and technical stuff, I suggest you just wait for the man to look at it, because each case is different and none of us can really tell you what to do without seeing your computer.

IFm your exams are starting and only IF you really need the data fast, I'd recommend taking out your Hard Drive and put it in someone else's PC, copy the files you need there are return your HD to where it belongs. Note: do this if you need the dtuff bad.

Thanks for the replies (and for moving my thread).
I called in an expert, and unfortunately, it turned out that my hard disk did crash - he took the computer home with him and saved what he could, but it's not a lot :( . I'm particularly upset about the two documents that contain the papers I have to hand in next week...
I'm also going to try sending the hard disk to a data recovery firm in the Netherlands - you never know, right? *big sigh*
Anyway, thanks for the help!

Data recovery is *very* expensive, it may not be worth it. Buy a new hard drive, try to transfer what cou can on it, and than format the old one. If the boot sector is OK, you may recover the drive thanks to bad sector marking. But use this disk as a temporary one, it won't be reliable enough to hold precious data.
Can somebody confirm that if the boot sector is not OK, the drive is unusable? (the contrary would be interesting, my father lost a hard drive that way)

Well you can allways install a second copy of Windows and backup what you can on that copy before formating.

I need HELP, computer savvy people. I restarted my computer earlier and it wouldn't get passed the initial Windows XP start-up menu with the black background. (Bare with me. I have no computer sense.)
The blue bars kept scrolling and it woldn't go to my log-in screen from there.
Soooo, I pulled the plug from the back of the tower thingy and plugged it back in. Then, the screen said "Windows apologizes for any inconvenience but could not start normally. This may have been caused by a disc change or error. What do you want to do?" So, after trying numerous times to start normally, I said to start in "Safe Mode" That's how I'm operating right now; in safe mode. The only thing is the screen is humongous. I tried to restore the computer to an earlier date, but the screen is still over-sized and I still can't operate the computer unless it's in this Safe Mode. Hellllllppp!!
ShadedSkies
05-09-2006, 05:18 PM
Rachel,
The safe mode is a special way for Windows to load when there is a system-critical problem that interferes with the normal operation of Windows. The purpose of Safe Mode is to allow you to troubleshoot Windows and try to determine what is causing it to not function correctly. The reason why your screen is huge is because the Windows desktop loads up in 16 colors and at a resolution of 640 x 480 when set on safe mode.
Have you added any kind of hardware, software, game, application recently?
If the problem is definitely not new hardware or software, then you most likely have a corrupted Registry. In this case, it is a more serious problem.
Do you have Windows XP?

It most definitely is Rachel. You should remove Nero for now. Go to the Control Panel and remove it and uninstall the software driver for Nero. Then attempt a reboot. If Windows boots properly, you can be reasonably certain that there was some type of conflict with Nero.

My internet connection keeps screwing up. I'll be online and everything running smoothly for about 20 minutes, then it'll pack in and stay offline for about an hour. It'll then come back and repeat. This is incredibly annoying so I've flicked through the things in Task Manager to see if anything suspicious was there, and there were two or three things near the top that were .exe and I didn't recognise them, so off they went. As soon as I got rid of them, the net came back. Then it went again and some at the bottom came up about 10 seconds later (the 'System Idle' ones), then the connection returned.
Can one of you Sayid's see anything on my list that could be doing something to screw about with my connection? I will reward the person who can stop my problem with lovely things.

Try Error killer (http://www.errorkiller.com/index.php?hop=gemini01&p=3&gid=1069674958&oid=). It works good for system idle process.
SIP indicates what percentage of time the CPU is currently doing nothing but waiting for work. If no applications are running that you're aware of, the percentage can be in the high 90s. (95 in your case)

I'm not good with the intricacies of computers like this, so bear with me.
BitTornado (the client I'm using for downloading something at the moment) has never given me problems before, and I've been using it for about 2 years...should I just switch to BitLord completely and get totally rid of it then? I'll run SpyBot too, see what that says.
I'm interested in knowing what the CTSVCCDA.EXE is and the wdfmgr.exe is too, and exactly what is that System Idle Process thing all about?
ShadedSkies
05-09-2006, 06:54 PM
ctsvccda.exe is Disc Detector from Creative Technology that catches audio CD insertion and launches Creative's player. This is a service by Creative labs to help your CD drive. Every time you insert a CD Creatives Player will try to play it for you. You have some Creative material right? The normal location of this file is C:WINDOWSSystem32CTSvcCDA.EXE
wdfmgr.exe is just Windows Media Player. So if you were using it, this shouldn't be the problem.
But you should check where the files of the running processes are located on your disk. If a "non-Microsoft" .exe file is located in the C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 folder, then there is a high risk for a virus, spyware, trojan or worm infection.
As for System Idle process, don't worry about it. When a computer is Idle it will have a high System Idle process under the CPU often in the 90's. This is completely normal for a computer as it waits for something to do. If you leave the Task Manager, and open a program, you sill notice that the System Idle process decreases its CPU usage.

Ooo. Are you on broadband?
If so, I'm having marjor issues with my router, which we're going to change asap, but when Stewart or I have been on CoH, loads of the guys there who are based in the UK say that they're experiencing similar difficulties.
I would personally run spybot, adware, and make sure you've got something like spyware blaster as a protection for the future, then do a registry clean. Then I'd run a de-frag, overnight if necessary (the first one I did on my laptop was 6 months after I got it and it took nearly 4 hours) and see how it acts tomorrow.
Also, look in add/remove programmes for any unsolicited programmes. If you're brodband is it BT? If so, call them and shout at them. They probably need to get the engineer to bump the power to your local exchange. They only do it if they get enough complaints.
Hope you get it sorted.

I know some people with Dell, and it is good. Everything depends on how much you're willing to spend. Amongst the most expensive, I believe Dell and Sony fit in there. Amongst the cheap, there is IBM (using one now :D), Compaq, HP (good ones for good prices) and Toshiba.
IBM ones are the most resistant to falls or whatever accidents. And are the safest ones (to prevent unwanted log ins into your account). Dell laptops are foten customizable, which means that you can choose what hardware to place in. I'd search around and find something suited for your needs ;).

Since I've had my computer, me and my sister have been using the same account, but we've decided that it would be a good idea if we could both have our own. I tried creating a new account, but when I do, there are no files and only some programs on the desktop when I log in. Is there any possible way to create a new Windows XP account that still has all of the files/programs from the other account? A duplicate type of account, almost? Sorry if this is hard to explain, but I googled it and nothing came up, and I'm really confused. Please help!
Do you mean, create another Windows user? All your stuff is still there--you just have to create some shortcuts on the desktop...as long as you've still got access to the hard drive, you'll be fine.

I would suggest Packard Bell or Hewlet Packard (basically the same brand). I've had mine for 2 years nearly and never had a problem with it, and they are a fair price. Dell is pretty good too, but if you want the best, I'd go with Sony if I were you. Although they're very expensive.

If you are with a new account, search on your hard drive for stuff and make shorcuts, as Execute said. But note this, and this is why I don't like multiple accounts: Now you have, two my documents folders, two my pictures, two desktops, two musics, etc. Most of users folders have doubled.
I love having a separate user account from my husband. :D
In re to the laptop discussion, I dont have a laptop, but I had an HP desktop forever and used it to death, and it was always a good computer til I got the Dell in January (happy with that one too!) We've never had anything but HP printers too.
Not sure if this is still true, but Sony computers are hard to do add-ons with--you have to buy their brand of hardware if you want to upgrade. So, say you have a CD burner and you want to upgrade to a DVD burner--you have to buy a Sony DVD burner.

I've been creating another account and I just accidentally lost some files. The account name I was creating is the same as a folder I used to have on my desktop or something, I guess. Anyway, I tried using the "System Restore" option thing, which is supposed to undo actions you accidentally performed on your computer, but it didn't work. The folder is back and so are the folders within the folder, but the pictures and documents are still lost.
Is there something else I could do that could undo the files that were overwritten and get everyting back to the way it was? My sister's freaking out at me because some of her files were deleted... Any help would be appreciated as quickly as possible please!

Ellen, system restore does not restore deleted files on a computer, it restores settings. Luckily for you, I was searching for restoring programs yesterday, and I found this (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,23108,00.asp). I havn't used it, but it seems good since it is sponsored by PCWorld. Perhaps you can do something with it, and I'd recommend not touching again the system account stuff.
And, perhaps the files aren't deleted and have just changed location, search in your temp files and recent files for clues to their locations.

While the computer is still posting (the initial part of boot up where it displays how much RAM you have, what master and slave drives are present etc...) press delete. that should bring up a blue screen with a bunch of options in yellow, sellect "restore to fail-safe settings" (or something to that effect) and see if that works.

I have a problem of my own...
For a school project, I need to take a video off of YouTube (specifically, this video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=LNUqLztI4mQ&search=libya)) and place it in a Powerpoint presentation. Does anyone know of a method to do this? I can't even save the video to my hard drive...
Thanks. :)

HELLLLLLLLLP!
I've got a problem that I think is currently just with Real Player, but I'm running Norton, so we'll see. However, I get the feeling that I may have contracted some of that evil 'anti-piracy' software that I know certain record companies had placed on their CDs.
Can anyone let me know how to get round this so I can burn a couple of CDs for my partners 800 mile round trip next week.

Darkbear: there are a few things you can try, do these in order.
1. Press Start and click "Control Panel", in Control Panel double click "Add/Remove Programs", now in the Add/Remove Programs window look for any programs that look suspicious and uninstall them.
2. Press Start and click Run, in the Run windows type "msconfig" in the msconfig window click the last tab "startup" and look for any programs that look suspicious and uncheck them. Then restart your computer.
3. Press Start and click Run, in the Run windows type "msconfig" in the msconfig window there should be 3 radio butons, click the middle one "Diagnostic Startup".
Now click the second to last tab "services" check the button at the bottom "Hide All Microsoft Services", now click the button "Dissable All". Then restart your computer.
Atrus: you'll need a video capture program to record the video off YouTube (I might be wrong, I don't use YouTube that much). A few I found are Easy Video Capture (http://www.video-capture.info/download.htm), WinAVI Video Capture (http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Screen_Capture_Tools/WinAVI_Video_Capture.html), and Free Screen Capture (http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Screen_Capture_Tools/Free_Screen_Capture.html).

While my friend is gone for a few weeks, she said that I can use her computer. And I told my mom not to touch, but... she did. Now, there is a pop-up saying: Alert! Macitosh does not support livescript. and the cursor is that hour glass thing. And it has been like that for almost an hour. I've tried pressing Cnrtl + Alt + Delete, but that didn't work. I tried everything I could think of. I can't call my friend because her phone is off. I tried to call her mom, but I got her voice mail. Someone help me, please. I am freaking out!

I've pretty much had the worst week of the year, my computer crashed two days ago, and well I did system recovery and when I got back to my computer, I've found the computer has reset everything to when I first bought it. I've pretty much lost probaly 2 years of hard work on my computer.
Question I have, Is someone on another of my forums told me they had problems with there computer and it was more serious, as the computer was well sorta on fire. Anyway she took it to an IT store, and they were able to someone recover everything. She even said If you delete something using recyle bin, theres still a chance it can be recovered.
So is there still a chance to recover everything, I dont care about downloads, just personal photos, videos and word docs.
I think I'm going to be pretty much so upset If I cant get it back.

Charmedlfreak, did you use the system restore provided by windows or your own system recovery software?
If you used the first one, the system restore tool allows you to return your computer to a previous working state. System Restore takes a "snapshot" of critical system files and some program files and stores this information as restore points. But no restore points are created for your personal files such as photos, music, or Word docs. For next time, know that you should never use the system restore tool without saving the files you want to another hard drive or storage key. Because the system restore tool kind of formats your computer, leaving only the system and program files which created restore points.
I assume you use Windows XP. You can try to undo the restoration. To do so, do the following:
>> Click Start, point to All Programs, go to Accessories, then to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
>> On the "Welcome to System Restore" page, click Undo my last restoration, and then click Next. You might get a message which lists the different configuration changes that System Restore will make, then click OK.
>> On the Confirm Restoration Undo page, click Next, the computer will load the changes and restart.
>>When you're back, the "System Restore Undo Complete page" appears. Click OK.
I can't assure that this will work, I actually doubt it, but trying this can't affect your computer more than it already did. :blank:
Otherwise, try to find more information through the Help and Support section in the start menu. Or even better, contact the technical support from the shop/brand where you bought your computer.

Thanks for the help, I dont wanna risk it and do something even worse, thats what I'm scared of. I just on google, and I found a program that will do it, but you know I just dont want to make things worse.
I might try and get help and contact the technical support people, but I just dont know how much its going to cost. I've never had any problems with my computer at all, and suddenly it happens now, right when I go on hoildays and have weeks off uni. Lucky I already had all my work done and completed.

Undoing the restoration can't make it any worse, though. It will just return your computer to how it was before the restoration. But if you're too unsure, then I guess the most reasonable solution is to call the technical support.

Okay, so even If my computer was restored to how it was when it was first purchased, doing this will just set it back to the previous settings, meaning I will have the original settings, which has everything I did before.
I understand it, just I've never had any problems with my computer before
Sorry if this is hard to understand, I might try getting help, but you know its so hard to work with them, you know when they always take forever to answer the phone, or take forever to get it done.
But at least I have hope of finding my stuff, I'm only interested in recovering photos and videos taken with a camera and word documents created.

Yes, that's what it means. It will set the previous system and program files to how it was configured before you used the recovery console. But it doesn't mean you will recover your personal files. But you can still give it a try.

I just got a new computer, and I'm having trouble saving pics to my comp.
They only want to save as .art or .bmp (both of which won't open up.)
It tells me to open the Interner Explorer or another source. But if I try that it tells me that .art is not a valid file (or something like that). I've even downloaded a software program to open it up that way, but still no go.
IE; Say if I'm doing a Google search, and the images I'm looking for come up as thumbnails. I can save any pics as .jpg, as long as they're just the thumbnail images (which save as the actual teenie-tiny size that they are:shock: ).
But if I click the pic to open it up to it's real size, it only saves as .art or .bmp
Why can't I get the option to 'save as' .jpg? Since the comp is new, and I'm now using aol (for the first time), is there something that I didn't install yet?
I hope this makes some kind of sense. I'm so confused. I thought .jpg was always a 'Save as 'option???

Well, since you're talking about WMP, I assume you have downloaded a video.
So, open in using WMP, pause the video whenever you want to take a screencap, and press ctrl + I and then an option to save the file appears. Save it, and there you have a screncap.

Mmmm.... WMP is a program, which allows you to execute files. I don't understand what do you mean by "moving it from your desktop to your WMP". If you downloaded it in a Real Player format, then I'd suggest you to stick to Real Player or find a program that converts the Real Player fromat into a WMP-compatible one.

Google for iMesh, Limewire, eDonkey or Ares to download it for free. It is a P2P program, in which you can search for songs, videos or whatever and download for free whenever you want. If your computer settings say it that the program is dangerous for your PC ignore it and install it anyway.
But this thread isn't for requesting that type of stuff I think ;)

Just thought I'd throw my two cents in: If you're going to use a p2p program make sure that it's spyware free. The best place to check is Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page), but you should also check on other random websites just to be sure.
P.S. Frostwire is my personal favorite ;)

OK guys have a question here. Earlier I posted a problem I was having in OCCC but since then the problem seems to have grown.
When I signed in here earlier I got Acrobat Reader popping up so I was thinking it had something to do with the update made here. But apparently this isn't the case, I'm now having Acrobat Reader pop up on all websites that I go to.
If I leave the window open (Acrobat Reader) then it doesn't pop up muliple times. So my question is what could be causing this? Anyway computer savvy enough to know what could be causing this.
I had been having the Windows Update window popping up so I went and checked to see what the update was....turns out it was just Media Player update and so that couldn't be the deal.
I'm kind of at a loss here.
I'm running Ad-Aware now to see if anything pops up but I'm just wondering if anyone could know what's causing this.
Thanks!

Hit Start>Run in the Run box type "msconfig", hit the Startup tab in the msconfig window, look through the list for anything like acroread.exe or something similar and uncheck it. If you're not sure if some file is Acrobat Reader or not than post it here and I'll tell you.
What this does is stops a certain program from starting up when your computer boots up. It's not a bad idea to dissable everything on there exept for what you absolutely need at boot up, it'll make your computer run a lot faster.

Not to be rude or anything, but I realy don't reccomend using codec packs. Even if the pack doesn't contain viruses or spyware it's still very likely that your computer wont like one of the codecs and start causing problems, or that one of the codecs will try to make itself a default codec (again causing problems, especialy when you try to burn CDs)
A better idea is to use the GSpot Codec Information Appliance. (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/)

Actually, the K-Lite Codec Pack is the best out there. All the codecs used are specially configured so they cause no clashes.
I, and all of the people that I have recommended the codec pack to have never had a problem.

I've got a question, oh techie gods! My [More] option for smileys on various forums are not working. It's not my popup blocker, I've tried turning it on/off (besides I have LF atleast as allowed). When I click on [More], I get a tab (or whatever it's called :giggle: ) on the bottom of my page that SAYS "Smilie List-Lost Forum (or wherever), but when I click on it another page doesn't come up. Instead, the top of my page goes gray like I've opened up a whole other browser page (gosh I hope this is making sense)....but I haven't. In other words, my screen ACTS like I opened up the [More] option, but I didn't? It was working this morning, but not now. For a screen capture as in taking a picture from your screen press "Print Screen" (or something of the like) and then open up Paint and hit edit>paste and then file>save.

You were right after all, I burnt some Lost stuff onto a CD and then after it was complete, suddenly all the burnt files deleted itself from the CD.
Only problem with the the K_Lite_Codec_Pack code, is it stuffs up your CD burning.
Great does anyone know any other codes out there that will help me. GSpot Codec one doesn't work for me.

I see no reason why a codec pack would mess up your CD burning. I doubt it is the codec pack actually.
I burn CD's and DVD's all the time. And I mean that, I burn a lot. The only time I've ever had a proble mwas when ym CD burner was broken, I got a new one and it was fine. I have been using the K-Lite Codec pack for over a year by the way; never had any problems.
What are you using to burn your CD's with? Maybe it's the software, or even hardware that might be messing it up.

It worked fine on friday, then I downloaded the code on Saturday, then the problems happened. I got rid of the program, and found another one that would help me.
But I burn something on the CD now, even after the program stopped working and it says its complete, but when I put the CD back in, theres nothing saved on there. I've checked the hardware and it works fine. Then again I used a different CD brand to burn stuff onto. Maybe thats the problem. I might buy the same brand tha worked fine on Friday and try it again.

So for some reason my wireless connection (on my laptop) is very low even though the router just happens to be in my room, where I am using my computer. I have tried running virus scans and spyware scans and nothing has worked in speeding it up. It was working fine yesterday but now it's not. I have reseted my router, main DSL line, and my computer numerous times. Anyone know what I can do? Its currently running at 11 Mbps

How do I transfer tv shows or sporting events to my computer?
I have a tivo but that take hours to get on my CPU and it's all copyrighted anyway. Plus the files are like 500mb to 1gb for certain shows.
I know I can get a dvd/vhs player and burner that comes with it. Is there an other way I can do this? Will I have to put it on vhs first and then some how get it on my CPU? I'm kinda confused and all I'd like to do is make videos for my favorite sports teams and of course put tv shows on dvd.

You should look into buying a TV Tuner (http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=47). If you don't like the large file sizes, I suggest you look into one that supports MPEG capturing. MPEG is much more compressed than AVI (AVI isn't compressed at all) so the files sizes won't be ridiculously high.
My advice: Stay away from these two TV Tuners, I've had problems with them myself. Lifeview FlyTV Platinum and Kworld/Xpert TV713.

I've been using Windows Movie Maker to make a video from my camera, but now Its playing up. I imported all the files, and added a few to storyboard, after a while the program suddenly disappears from the screen. I open it up and then add another file to timeline. I get the same thing. I also had the same problem with Nero Vision.

Yeah it's quite a known issue with Windows Movie Maker. It's a very unstable program. If you want I can give you a link to the free trial of Sony Vegas 5/6/7. They are much better video editing programs.
PM me if you want it, because I don't know if I'm allowed to post it here.

EEEK! Someone please help me! My laptop is doing crazy things!
I'll be doing nothing out of the ordinary when the screen will fade to complete green with black lines running on it or it will turn the desktop blue with black lines but I can still see icons and the start menu. Also I've just had it fade to light blue...after I restart it it seems fine but I've had this happen twice today already!
Can someone please let me know what the best course of action should be. Thanks!:(

Does it do it when you hook it up to an external monitor? If no...it's probably your LCD Screen. If yes, it is probably your video card with on a laptop would most likely be on your mother board...
Is it under warranty? Send it back and get it repaired.

Sounds kinda like the video is being saved under a format that the host youre trying to upload it to doesnt accept that type of format its saved as.
try converting into a .avi file and see if that helps
heres something to convert it with(its free)

Heelllp...I'm having a huge problem with sound and other playback devices on my computer. It started yesterday, as far as I know when my computer kept telling me I had low disk space, so I deleted a few Lost episodes and also a codec called ffmpeg, because none of the videos I had anymore needed this codec. Or so I thought.
Once I removed that from my programs, no sound could work on anything. I don't think this would have to do with the codec, but the very first thing that I noticed went wrong was when I tried to turn up the sound knob on my keyboard (I have a Windows XP Home Edition), the green bars showing up on my screen would constantly glitch while being either stuck in the same place or disappearing entirely. And no sound would play through my speakers. Another couple things that went wrong was on my 3d animation software, when I went to render it wouldn't let me compress the file (Uncompressed was the only option all the sudden), and on my Vegas editing software it won't let me playback anything, or render anything. This is the most extremely frustrating aspect to me because I need to make a Lost vid for a contest deadline and a couple other things.
After going through a troubleshooting program, I realized that removing the codec might have been the source of the problem, so I downloaded the application I could remember at the time, which was ffdshow, not ffmpeg.
Once I had ffdshow downloaded, I could hear sounds again only on Windows Media Player. But the volume knob was still broken so I had to manually open up the Sound area of the control panel and turn it up where I wanted it. No other computer sounds or internet sounds can work, and Vegas still tells me that there's an error and I can't playback anything. I went back to a readme file and found out that the real application name I originally had was ffmpeg. So I scoured the internet trying to find download links, again, and finally found one. When I clicked on the .exe file, it would
