View Full Version : Simple explanation for Walt Picture on Milk Carton

Here is my explanation: Hurley is drinking milk, liquid milk. It's unclear whether it is kept cold, but in any case, milk won't last more than 2-3 weeks, even if carefully pasteurized. So, that means the milk was brought to the hatch supplies fairly recently. There is no evidence at this point that Desmond doesn't have outside contacts (out of the Island) or that the Dharma project people are not shuttling stuff to the island still. So, say the milk was brought there in the last 15 days, that means that Walt, having been on the island for 44 or so days (since plane crash), it is quite possible that someone declared him missing in Australia (stepfather, or any other people), hence Walt appears on milk cartons as missing.

Related point: most of the food is still good (fresh), even chocolate bars and potato chips. None of this could have been kept fresh over many years (since the beginning or end of the Dharma project).

Or maybe Hurley's just dreaming.

Yeah, I figured it was just because he was dreaming...... There was no refrigeration that I saw in that room, so how would it keep cold. Not to mention, how would the ice cream keep frozen. And it was kind of strange that he pulled a plate of food all prepared straight out of a cardboard box.

Why would they print a picture of boy on a milk carton, if they now that he was on a plane which crashed..?

No it was just a dream ;)

Hurley was dreaming of milk. This was not a refrigerated room.
It was full of non-perishable food items meant to last for some time.
It seems that Walt's face was on the milk carton.
But what this means in Hugo's dream is anyone's guess.

From my point of view, this dream shows that Hurley has some precognitive "power"... Through his dream, he is aware that something has happened to Jin and Walt :p

notice how he also takes a fully barbequed steak and mashed potatoes out of a box on a plate. dreams are called surreal for a reason. they are not real. they are just hurley's desire to go nuts on that food supply. the milk carton is just another subtle clue the writer's throw in to make fans like us nuts. they know by now we are going to dissect every frame and so they are just trying to make it worth our while

Plus, it was food out of a cardboard box. Highly symbolic I'm sure.

or...

What percentage of pictures on a milk carton's "missing" photo depict children between the ages of 5 and 15? Who is the only person on the island to fit this "category"? Walt. It kind of makes sense that Hugo's subconscious would put Walt's face on the milk carton in his dream.

First, Hurley was dreaming.

Second, they don't put crash victims on milk cartons. The purpose of pictures on milk cartons is that it might be a kid you'd meet in everyday life so that a kidnapping might be solved.

No one would be expecting a kid on a plane crashed in the South Pacific to show up kidnapped in a trailer park in Fresno so no one would put his picture on a carton.

.... since this is a dream.... and at this time, Walt is missing.... Hurley's dreamland just put the two together

Hurley doesn't know Walt is missing, he just thinks they left on the raft...

It could've been a carton of powdered milk (Just Add Water) .

...and it may not mean anything to Hurley at all...just a goodie put in there for us, the audience.

maybe Hurley is subconsiously psychic.
he knew the numbers of the lottery. he guessed that hatch might have food and old stuff from the 50s and his dream had a missing picture of walt, and walt is missing. he is psychic and doesnt even know it.

Probably. I am sure if Hurley saw the photo on the milk carton he would be suprised.

It didn't look like Hurley even noticed it. Also, in a lot of coutries they have pasteurized, boxed milk that keeps just fine for years. This is how it is in a lot of south america and island countries like the dominican.
And it was a dream, not any of it looked real

I have a feeling that in lack of original ideas or a grand idea to connect all puzzle pieces, the writers/creators are feeding fans with little easter eggs, then roam through the fan forums picking up all possible theories that rise in response.
That would suck though

It was a dream.

That is not to say it was not 'important.' Instead of Hurley being psychic, it may very well has been Walt, subconsciously or not. Walt get abducted, his psychic screams might very well be felt by everyone... including Hurley and Shannon.

I'm also not sure why it needs a 'reason.' it was a dream.

NoFool_2005

We dont put missing kids on milk cartoons here in Australia.

of course hurley knows walt is missing... ALL of the passengers are missing.... like someone else mentioned (i apologize for not remember who)... walt is the only child as far as hurley knows so in his dream it would make complete sense for there to be a picture of walt on the milk carton... all in all imho i just think this was one case of the producers/writers/prop personnel winking at the audience ;)
