I think with the launching of www.bigspaceship.com and you find out that it is merely a web designer site that was involved in the ABC sites...the illusion that was BBS1 is gone. Though an interesting site...it was a fun ride while it lasted. I'll never forget first logging on and seeing the gas mask and the music...it was creepy.
bigspaceship.com is not a new site. it pre-dates LOST. we haven't linked bigspaceship1.com to bigspaceship.com they are registered to different entities and use different DNS servers.
bss1 has been inactive before (from the 16th to the 21st) so it might start up again. i've been monitoring it and will post back here and a few other boards i'm on if/when it changes. i'll keep watching these threads as well, but there isn't much to post right now.
teh _README.txt file in my archive lists the threads i've been posting in about bss1.

I think that having the names bigspaceship is more than a coincidence...especially with the Lost creative design team.

Since it seems that bigspaceship did the official lost sites (if they didn't do them, i'm sure abc/LOST would complain) then maybe the "constelation" hidden image in the last http://bigspaceship1.com/ posting might be the path to take in the "explore" sections of http://oceanicflight815.com/
Might be hard to verify, but if they are the path you need to take to get extra easter eggs that would be cool. I'll play around with that later.

yup, it's been like that since anything that's not http://bigspaceship1.com/ or http://www.bigspaceship1.com/ (ie http://blahblahblah.bigspaceship1.com/ ) started redirecting to ipodnews.
they are on the same server so it's probably a default setting for the webserver unless otherwise configured.

yes, we did see the 42 in white mouse, red cheese flash file from 2005-10-11. the "42" is a shape set in flash, so no image file is used. nothing to post.
** white mice + 42 = "deep thought" in my book... and that book is the hitchiker's guide to the galaxy. or it's just "42" from the Numbers and a mouse to continue the animal theme.

it could be, it's a stock optical illusion.
last week when we had no activity from the 16th to the 21st, the site started changing again on friday night (11:30 pm EST) then we got more on sunday. i can see that they might not wan't a randomly updating website changing during the week since that might cause some problems for people who work or go to school. if we're lucky, we might get a site that changes on weekends only. -at least we'd know not to expect stuff during the week.

have you guys checked out though bigspaceship.com? if you type in the other version for the directory (v2.5) you can get more. There flash sites are so awesome. I've taken flash classes at school and I see what they have done and it blows me away. I like the Elektra one. Did someone say they did Donnie Darko? I don't see the link to that one, but i always loved that site. I'd love to work on a flash site like that. Just cant think of what to make, but a good amount of what they did I could do.

If you look in the Source code for the site you can view WWW access statistics (presumably for the site in question) at this link here: http://www.interchange.ubc.ca/web-stats/2004/Mar/Mar10.html#Archive
I've been unable to unearth anything that seems to make this more than a gimmick. Though there are bazillions of directories and strange file-names listed.

i assume you're looking at an archive? the current http://bigspaceship1.com/ page is just the crappy 216 nuts gif....
as for the gas mask; i only have polarlized 3-d glasses so i wasn't able to see how it looked in 3-d (maybe i'll rent shark boy and lava girl again and use those glasses) the gas mask was the only obviously 3-d image that i saw on bss1.
i think many of the images used were not created exclusivly for bss1 (both optical illusions had been seen elsewhere before bss1's 'lost' incarnations) i wonder where the others came from?

Whats up with the nuts animation that's up right now? Has it been up there for long?
yeah it's been there since 2005-10-24 17:03:56 EST. kind of a bummer. the html source code for the nuts is also pretty basic. it doesn't look like the html source code from the other versions. my guess is that someone pulled the plug and just put up that gif because it's smaller than a flash file, and the lack of morse code in the title might be to reduce interest and make people stop checking the site. i'm still keeping an eye on it though ;)
there was a downtime for bss1 between the 16th and 23rd (with only 1 change on the 21st) so maybe we'll be lucky and get new stuff on the 4th, and 8th. who knows?

Found something interesting on another board (television without pity) that I have yet to see mentioned here that I know of. Do you think this has something to do with the name of the site?
Posted by Manchot
I thought that I'd share another interesting tidbit that I just discovered. According to the website, the president of Oceanic Airlines is Michael Orteig. A quick search on the name revealed that the $25,000 prize which Charles Lindbergh won for crossing the Atlantic was called the Orteig Prize, named after its financial backer, Raymond Orteig. (In case you didn't know, the more recent Ansari X-Prize, which was won by SpaceShipOne, was modeled after the Orteig Prize.) Thus, it seems to be an appropriate name for a airline president.
SpaceShipOne? Like bigspaceship1???

Thats pretty cool! i didn't know the X-Prize was modeled after an other competition... i did a quick google and found this from an msnbc page:
"The Ansari X Prize, established in 1996, is modeled after the $25,000 Orteig Prize that was won by trans-Atlantic aviator Charles Lindbergh in 1927. Erik Lindbergh, a member of the X Prize Foundation's board, said his grandfather would have been "really excited" about the achievement."
Still, i think it might be a bit of a strech to go from "Oceanic Airlines" -> "Michael Orteig" -> "Orteig Prize" -> "X-Prize" -> "SpaceShipOne" -> "bigspaceship1.com"
-you know how they say about six degrees of separation is all you need to connect anything to anything... (well anyONE to anyONE, but same diff)

you're right! and that is interesting. does anyone have extra info on what the race's name was? in the "orientation" episode desmond says his boat crashed, so it's most likely a sailing race. i can't remember many details about what desmond said he was training for when he met jack doing the "Tour de stad".

Ok if you can find the the guy who first discovered Bigspaceship1 I think thats they guy that made the site. Well I mean you dont just casually go and reverse the IP of the hanso website and discover something like this, its a 1 in a million chance. So maybe the guy that made bigspaceship1 was frustrated that noone was finding his site and did this to try and get people to discover it. Its a far fetched idea and I know it doesnt explain how he got the exact IP but its just a thought.

Eh, it's far-fetched, but I like it...wasn't the addy that someone got when they did a Whosis the same town that some person (or company, whatever) did an ARGish thing for some movie or t.v show? I remember reading it somewhere, LOL....I dunno, I guess I'm remaining positive still....

http://lxicon.perception.net/lost/visual.route.2005-10-08.report.for.thehansofoundation.org.txt
-as a web programmer i DO just casually do visual routes on odd websites. i like to see where they are coming from and visual route can usually tie IPs to cities and plot the hops on a global map. (pretty cool actually)
anyway, i did the visual route on the 8th the day after i saw the "bigspaceship1.com" text at https://thehansofoundation.org/ (another thing i normally do when poking around a website) -they removed the text by Oct 17th.
i had got the "optical illusion / WBNY" version and the rodent revolution code got my interest. i looked around on the ABC forums and found that others had already found it, so i wasn't me (heehee)
it's a good idea to check for most recent postings though. the forums should all be dated, so we could probably look for the earliest post from any of the main forums that are talking about bss1. maybe i'll look at that later, but i don't have time just now.
i've listed the other forums i was posting in in my _README.txt file, and there's also the television without pity forum and an orkut forum but i don't have an orkut account to read it. there's also the /refer/ page at bss1. that should point back to other forums that are still linking people to bss1.
i'm still monitoring btw.

i did have a similar thought about the ! but it could also have been a test to see if we had stoped checking, or what the reaction would be. (lack-luster it seems)
i already looked at the gif for palette entries, but it seems to have nothing hidden. i tried a few stegenographic programs that can hide extra data in .gif files. -it seems gifshuffle comes up the most in google searches about the subject so i tried passwords like 2FENO6, 2feno6, lost... in both compressed and non-compressed modes but it all seems like gibberish. I'll come back after 2.06 since that seems to be the crucial event. If something new comes out of all of it, you could start a new, different thread. Seriously, this thread gives me a headache.:)
You know, that's a good idea. I mean, 1/2 of this thread is "man this sucks" threads and "it's real/not real" threads. And the other half is either the same info over and over again OR *gasp* new stuff.
Maybe until our spaceship makes another move we can take this time to put together all the information that has been found so far. So that way a newbie can read a page or two of stuff before posting that he was "just at the site and saw the nuts and OMG what does that mean", you know? :D
And you're not the only one with a headache. :D

There is a Manta Ray on the page.
The Morse Code says "DOGSTAR". Backwards is RatsDog.
Which I believe was the name of Keanu Reeves old band.
Reference to Vincent if you ask me. Vincent gets eatten by a Manta Ray???
And there is a link in the source code...
http://www.malbertphoto.com/mobulas1.html
Mr.Clucks has changed and the source code says...
"This site is not created by ABC or Touchstone. As a former writer for the show 'LOST' I have inside knowledge that serious fans may want to have. Instead of just leaking this info, I thought I would have a little fun and present it in code. Also I have nothing to do with the podcast I am linking to. I am just a big fan of it. - Quinn"

Are TPTB over there listening to us?
Hey, does anyone know anything about astronomy? I coulda sworn "dogstar" was more than Neo's band but when I googled it I came up short.
Those "flying" mantras are so neat though!
Edit: Hah, never mind. "dogstar" is used to refer to Sirius(Alpha Canis Majoris), the brightest star in the sky. It belongs to the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog, which represents Orion's larger hunting dog, and as such is commonly referred to as the "Dog Star."

since there's no music on bss1 how 'bout this celebratory tune:

--edit--
nothing in the image palettes.
the image is actually at the path "/images/1.gif" instead of just "lost.gif" like the old 216nuts lost.gif (which is still in the document root)
* an image src with a leading slash is not as portable as just using "images/1.gif" -code like that forces the page to be at the root directory, and break when you move the code to a subdirectory. this code is different from the 216 nuts and very different from the original bss1 incarnations. but it also look hand written rather than piped out of some dreamweaver type program.
the malbertphoto.com link is not related to bss1 as far as i can tell from reverse dns and whois lookups:

well on the 5 other boards i watch, it looks like you were the first, so 2005-11-08 23:01:00 EST it is. someone on the abc/LOST forum posted at 11:30 but the others didn't have anything about it yet.
from the mobulas page : "It is not uncommon to mistake mobulas for mantas. One researcher I spoke with was careful to make the distinction; another used the names interchangeably."
that begs the question, is the pic on bss1 a manta ray or a mobula? i guess it doesn't matter much, but i've never heard of a mobula before. google image searches of "mobula" and "manta ray" don't help much. they look pretty much the same.
-you learn something new everyday, that's why you get up in the morning.

the reason we keep checking bss1 is because it's good! whoever is doing the full-blown updates (not that placeholder 216nuts page) is a good designer. the images and audio are pretty cool in a disturbing sort of way. quality work goes a long way to keeping interest (unlike some of the hack bss1 wannabes)
and NOTHING has ever been explained. there's no proof it has anything do to with LOST or how the url got onto the hanso site or what any of the miriad of odd selections that have been displayed have to do with LOST or with each other. the "clues" and puzzles and ties to one another have all been left up to the audience. -now there's someone who knows how to keep a mystery alive.
i think of it as cross between a online gallery and a puzzle site. i don't mind checking it to see whats new and interesting. ...and don't get me started on random reward schedules reinforcing stimilus/response curves....
needless to say we're all "pushing the button" (the reload button)

Shred,
First, welcome to moderator-dom-- it's a job I wouldn't want! I guess to answer your questions, we do monitor the site for updates, and while they come fast and furious at some times, at others they are maddeningly slow. It has, however, finally been updated again, giving us new fodder for discussion. The mention(s) of Mr. Cluck have to do with several things-- boredom, speculation, and more speculation. We have a couple of amazing posters (ie. Lexicon, etc.) who know more about programming and such than us average folks, and they figure out the "goods" on the new updates and are kind enough to share their knowledge and experience with us. This thread has kept us going through three weeks:crackup: of no LOST, and even though some of us have not posted in a while, we ARE still reading it! I would hate to see this thread closed down-- and in fact, due to the longevity of the discussion, would even recommend a sticky. Respectfully yours!

First just so you know, I have edited this post like 3 times but its better than reposting I guess. I had missed reading the last page for some reason lol.
It is a mobula, if you look at the gallery on the mobula site you can tell which image they altered in order to get it, http://www.malbertphoto.com/mobula_images/mobula4b.jpg which the file says mobula
The other thing I noticed (so used to changing urls from notpron i tried things) that there is also this photo that seems to be the "noncropped version" here
http://www.malbertphoto.com/mobula_images/mobula4.jpg
Then here is the other thing, if you change 1.gif to 1.jpg you get this
http://bigspaceship1.com/images/1.jpg
btw, does anyone have the link on how to do the palette thing in ps? I can't remember where and I never read how to do it. I've just used equalize or channels.
Also I must comment on notpron again - i love this thing i'm on -71 (after 81 it goes into negatives) I love trying to figure it out, but I do use the hints on the main forum and others if I get stuck. Its fun to think, but after an hour or so I will usually search to find more out)
I was actually thinking it would be fun to do a lost one, I guess I probably would get lots of hits on it. But I have to finish fixing my site on the server I'm using - I dont have the DNS changed over yet, and it would probably use a decent amount of bandwidth but would be right off of the ip address which wouldn't be good!

http://bigspaceship1.com/images/1.jpg
NICE find! i had tried 2.gif but didn't think about .jpg (i did try .swf with no joy)
i was looking at the headers in the mobula4b.jpg and now the 1.jpg and noticed this in the headers for each:
"JFIF" and "Ducky"
JFIF is a standard header for jpg files and it stands for JPEG File Interchange Format).
"Ducky" apparently means it was created with photoshop (i didn't know that) so it's probably not a big deal.
to check for palette data in photoshop you need an indexed colour image (.gif, .bmp) and then go to [Image]->[Mode]->[color Table]. change the palette to windows standard or something where all the colours will be different from what they were originally. that should help find anything.
i usually use lview and use the [Retouch]-> function wich is really for setting one of the palette entries as transparent, but it lets you mask off everything that isn't that palette in black or white. more info by me here : http://forums.go.com/abc/oceanic/thread?start=250&threadID=599587
...and [b]Fuchtherezer nice work on finding that poster. was that the earliest post about bss1 you found? might be worth looking deeper into that.

I'll download the program and try it when I get a chance. I did find out though how to hide stuff like that. I originally was messing around and had been using the "equalize" to find it. it shows up that "other white" as gray. If you make your own image in bw and then add anything with that not quite white color you can find it through the equalize. Which I think is cool, but I have no reason to make one, lol

hmm the current version doesn't seem to have the same interface as the old version. i have the old one from 1996 here http://lxicon.perception.net/lview.zip you don't need to install it, just extract and double click lviewpro.exe and use the file/open menu to open an image. the use [Retouch]-[Backgrounf Color...] menu to mask off palette entries.

yeah you're right. i used the lasso tool in photoshop with a tolerance of 1 and selected the white border at the top left. then i painted the selection black so it shows up. they do look identical!

http://lxicon.perception.net/lost/bigspaceship1.com.liquid.trend.border.images.1.jpg
my guess is that they took the liquid trend image into photoshop, converted to index colour and pasted the mobula image onto it to get it to dither to something close to grey scale. when it was saved, the border was all that remained of the liquid trend image. i'll try something like that and see if i get the same results....

it's probably something like that. i couldn't get the exact palette results, there may have been some other layers in there to shift the colours above and below the horizon.
unless someone can determin a pattern to the border (just looks like dithering to me) i'm going to let it go at that.
--edit 2--
i put up a version with the palette switched to windows system. that gives all the colour entries a different colour and they are all different from the original palete. this messes up the look of the image but will let you see the borders between two colours that used to be very similar, and are now way different.

i was playing around with it in mspaint and it seems theres loada different colours in that border, cant u change all the pallette colours and try to determine summit?

also i noticed that the left and right edges to match up at one point, as if they're a code some how, but im not sure how, its for qwite a significant part of the image btw
edit 2***
its rele annoying i go to www.bigspaceship1.com/images, but its forbidden
know any hackers that be able to bash the shell and gain access?? i mite, but we're uk and would have to wait till tomorrow afternoon

if you do the same thing with the 1.jpg file (after conversion), you'll see that they are exactly the same pattern all around the border (but with different pseudo-colors).
whether it means anything it's another story... :)

the file size for both the orig and broken images were the same but the md5sums were different. so i just dragged them both into my text editor and [ctrl]+[tab]'d between the two. i do that often when looking for changes in code i have done. i don't normally do it with binary files, but it worked.

Just something regarding the old morse code of "DogStar"
Sirius is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major, and is also the brightest star we can see in the northern hemisphere. In addition to these two facts, there are also some interesting tidbits about this star which are less well-known.
The ancient Egyptians called Sirius the 'dog star', after their god Osirus, whose head in pictograms resembled that of a dog. In Egypt, Sirius shines for most of the summer, and since it is such a bright star, the Egyptians actually believed that the additional light from this nearby star was responsible for the summer heat. This of course is not true. However the origin of the phrase 'the dog days of summer' comes from this ancient belief -- the 'dog star' being the root of this common saying!

i saw this neat idea on the television without pity forums:
by : sdPalladio
Today @ 10:48 AM
Just some conjecture, but people use the Dogstar as a directional star. Of course it's not always a reliable method of steering, especially when you lose sight of it. I think the obvious connection here is that Shannon was using Vincent as a compass to Walt, lost sight of him, and ran into...a bullet.

Also just to note on the guy who posted initially about bigspaceship1. Oh and its nothing really but he has 2 posts and he joined at 06 oct which could mean 2FEN06 and also "oct" as in octagon - the shape of the dharma logo.

as for the pic: it's a pretty good guess that its an Ernst Haeckel nature illustration. maybe some form of plankton or tiny sea creature. i looked through all 100 of the plates they had up at that site and did a google image search for "Haeckel" and couldn't find that exact image.

Googled Ernst Haeckel, kinda interesting stuff. Checked out this one site and this popped out at me: "Haeckel instead believed that the environment acted directly on organisms, producing new races (a version of Lamarckism). The survival of the races did depend on their interaction with the environment, a weak form of natural selection."

yeah some that were really close. but the link must be to give credit to the 101-year-dead naturalist artist. those people who did scientific illustrations were pretty damn good. i've always been impressed at the detail and beauty of most hand drawn scientific illustrations. if you haven't checked out some of the illustrations at the linked site http://caliban.mpiz-koeln.mpg.de/~stueber/haeckel/kunstformen/liste.html i suggest you have a look. (the links "Tafel 001" to "Tafel 100" are the plates, the others seem to be text of the publications)
any way chaz, if you got different morse code at 8:40 and we now have the " A DOG IS AN MAN AND A MAN IS A DOG" up now. i wonder if i should make a second entry.... i don't like logging second hand data that i'm not reasonably certain about. i think i'll change the the timestamp to 9:01 with the current morse code. if i can get a secondary confirmation of the other morse then i'll add a second log entry for the 8:40 incarnation (no offense)
oh, and i doubt the dotted border changed. it's been set with a style sheet entry that has been the same for each of these new versions:
img {
border: 1px dotted #FFF;
padding:30px;
}
(or maybe it was different and whoever did the update noticed the img border and the morse needed correcting)
I also found an interesting article outlining what is known as "Haeckel's Hoax". His most famous illustration was faked!
hmm... that IS interesting (and a bit troubling)

My only other thought is that maybe these updates will be increasingly harder to find the refrence: 1 was on the first page, 2 took a little search but still pretty obvious, 3 found by playing "the numbers" game and squinting. 4 will probably take a bloodhound and the ESP my grandma gets when she gets overzealous on the inhailer.

I think maybe the guy who is updating Bss1 is giving links to the location of the photos he is using just for credit and or legal purposes, cuz most of these links are usless in a Lost point of view, especially IMO the one thats there now.

Hello, new here. Just finished reading it all. This is all very intruiging indeed.
Don't know if you know...but the Links page on http://www.mrclucks.com : http://www.mrclucks.com/links.html contains a direct link to BSS1 under the name of 'HQ: Sector 3 of 6'.
Soz if I'm being dumb and this has been said. I didnt see it anywhere on here though and I noticed it some time ago.
Hello everyone btw! :tiphat:

The only thing about bss1 that makes me mad, is no matter what we figure out about the site, we really have no way of knowing if any of the connections we make are correct. Then again this person could just be doing this to see how long we look at the site and pay attention to it and to drive us crazy. I think it would be nice if there were hints on the site letting us know if we are in the right direction (whether or not the clues have anything to do with what is going to happen in lost is another story though).

Can't imagine I'd find anything with the first two links, but we're crazy and we'll check..

It's changed again!
The gas mask pic is back and there are several sound files playing over each other! Actually it's the same file starting up again and again, difficult to listen to when a few are running.
Back to flash again - 5.swf
Morse code still says "A DOG IS AN MAN AND A MAN IS A DOG"
lxicon
11-12-2005, 11:34 AM
nice one Fraslet, that's a few in row you found eh?
2005-11-12 12:26:32 EST (http://bigspaceship1.com/)

audio : (error loop) Magnet and Steel by Walter Egan appears on Walter Egan's Not Shy (1978)
morse : A DOG IS AN MAN AND A MAN IS A DOG

that flash file is an error that was only up for a little while on 2005-10-13 from 00:21:00 to 01:23:00 and then again from 15:15:00 to 15:25:00 (EST) it's the same song getting restarted without the other one being stopped. if you listen long enough all the versions stop one at a time like a round. pretty odd.

the html is definitly hand edited. there are a few errors in the html like a missing </body> and for some reason they've thrown in a bunch of "<br />" which i don't even think do anything?
...still having a look...
Fraslet
11-12-2005, 11:43 AM
Yup! I'm intrigued and ever so nosey u see :D
There's a name for when the song gets restarted, I think it's called "a round" or "a canon", it's the sort of thing parents get subjected to at school plays and the like.

Hello
The new vversion is The gas mask, yes, and the morse cose the kwnew "A DOG IS AN MAN AND A MAN IS A DOG", ok.
And the music we know also, it's "magnet and steel".
We can say that the audio starts in frame #1, and it's repeat ever 10 frames (10, 20, 30, ....and the last 220). In the frame 330 there is a "stop all sounds".
Other curiosity is that ever 10 frames there are a new "layer". Ever the gas mask
bye!

i was wondering how that worked. i know macromedia director but never bothered to learn flash. i figured it was something like that.
apparently the "stop all sounds" isn't working. it's not stpping them all at once, unless they were all on loop until the stop command then each one ends 10 frames apart?
--edit--
oh, and YAY audio is back!
--edit--
one other thing. if you leave it up after all the music stops, they start again after a while.

I think that flash is more easy than Director. but I'm "learning" still.
And after "stop all sounds" haven't loop. We can see the image, and the file is finnish.
In same Spanish fourm they're also a lot of people with the same questions about bss1. It's a global mystery !!!!

I don't understand "trim" it's careful? danger?
trim has a few meanings:
it can mean "fit" as opposed to "fat" (my joke about "air cats" and "sea cats" used this meaning)
in sailing you trim the sails to bring them into the wind
it can mean cutting off then end of something like trimming your hair or trimming then end of a ribbon.

very interesting if you google trim island cat
Fraslet
11-12-2005, 01:05 PM
Hmm hadn't thought of the other possible meanings of trim at all, but there are:
a) Attitude of an aircraft in flight when allowed to take its own orientation
b) Balance in flight by regulating the control surfaces
c) Be in equilibrium during a flight
lxicon

yeah there are LOTS
http://m-w.com/dictionary/trim
there are a few meanings for it as a verb, adjective, adverb and noun and even a city in east ireland.
-you learn something new everyday, that's why i get up in the morning
--edit--
those words are very common which throws off the google searches. i tried it with quotes to be sure to get all the words in that order with 0 results each
"trim island cat"
"trim is land cat"
"trimislandcat"
--edit--
you do get results for a search of +trim +island +cat but that's not too suprising and might not mean anything.

Anyone of you hear of the book "The Mysterious Island" by Jules Verne? ...
http://www.online-literature.com/verne/mysteriousisland/
"A hot-air balloon carrying five passengers and a dog escapes from Richmond, Va., during the American Civil War. It is blown off course and deposited near an obscure island."
Maybe not much connection to Lost but I found it when I was looking for Joop the orangutan (http://thehansofoundation.org/lep.html). Apparently the castaways in "The Mysterious Island" come in contact with Master Joop which is an orangutan. :)
