i wouldn't mess with that. on some servers; too many failed attempts can trigger servers to blacklist your ip then you wont be able to get anything after that.

Hmm...with the apple pop-up at the end and the sometimes the immediate redirection to the apple page...makes me think this is some scheme for Apple, especially with their announcement of providing LOST episodes on the new video ipod. Since apple would be a commercial sponsor, they would be able to hop on the official ABC Hanso site and have a link to theirs.

Here's something else I found, not sure if it means anything or not, but here goes.

We've all seen that Matthew Bardram owns the site, at least according to WHOIS. So I did a quick google search for that name and found a person of that same name at www.atomicmedia.net (http://www.atomicmedia.net). I was trying to find something about a location for that company to relate that to the zip code given on WHOIS. I clicked all around but didn't find anything with a location. While on the the news page, I clicked a link for this "Newsfeed via typographi.com (http://typographi.com)." On the main page of typographi.com is a link to iPodNews. I found it strange that a site about fonts would have a link to iPodNews front and center on their main page. I know the other day that bigspaceship1 was redirecting traffic to that same site. The title on iPodNews says "iPodNews.com | iPod News updated every 108 minutes."

I'm beginning to think this is may be similar to the ilovebees with Halo 2.

there seems to be as viral marketing aspect creeping into it lately. it could be that the site started generating so much traffic that they decided to capitalize on it. (one of the morse codes was "TAKINGMOREHITSTHANSAWYEREVERWILL" heehee.

if it's just a hoax then the person doing it has to keep updating or we'll all get bored. and i think the collective curiosity of all of us checking the site will outlast him if it is just a hoax. -would you want to keep creating new content every day for over a week now?

Creosote is a chemical found in beachwood. It is carciginic and can cause skin cancer.

Without proper treatment, I wonder if an extreme case of skin cancer would look much like leprosy...or "zombie" i.e. "Life Challenged" from the script.

If I were a betting man I would bet quite a bit of money that this site is not related to ABC and it is indeed a prank.

I know it's been said before but let's not forget that there is no terms of use link. Why would the other ABC sites have it and this one not? Legal departments are pretty crazy about this sort of thing and I would be very suprised if they would make an exception for this site.

Also it's being updated too much. Way too much! If it were a legit site for the show they would be paying out the arse for all of these updates - do you think they would waste that kind of money for a site that doesn't even make sense? Also they would want to give people a chance to see these things if they were real clues. Changing it several times in a 15 minute span would only realitically be done to screw with us - that's a fact even if it is the head producer of Lost doing it himself! But I don't buy it - this has to be a fake.

But it's connected to an actual abc site you say. Well yes - apparently it is. All I know is:

A) Sites can be hacked - and perhaps the abc owned site was hacked - and www.bigspaceship1.com on the security page is the only thing they changed.

B) Bigspaceship1.com apparently has ties to a web developer or a group of web developers. If ABC used outside sources to create content the people they hired could have hidden this little clue and used it as a joke - and it has nothing to do with the actual writers of the show.

I'm not saying any of this isn't fun. I'm going to keep refreshing the page and checking back here for new theories. But I think we should assume it is fake until proven otherwise.

And proof I hope to find - I'm going to e-mail abc and see if they are aware of the site. Perhaps the link will be taken off of the abc owned site once I write them.

Great way to argue the site being legit!! Very great points. And u should email them because they would not lie and they for sure would be pissed if it wasnt a real site which in that case they would take it off...

Did they send us there... um not really but they did show us the way... I believe that video link on the Hanso site is not working for a reason!!! its true that noone has proven a link to abc/lost but noone has disproved it with the same authority. i'm still at a toss up but obviously i'm still pressing the button -the reload button that is.

here are two points to concider:

1) if it was an official abc site they would not be able to change the content so frequently. they'd need to go threough channels. (you know how they say it takes IBM 6 months to ship a an empty box.) so having it be unofficial lets them bypass those restrictions. and having the content change radomly has a psychological effect on conditioned stimulus-response learning curves (wow psych 101 pays off for once!)
- more people refreshing opens up viral marketing strategies. note the pop up link to itunes in the entry:

if the site isn't linked to abc/lost i'd be suprised if they didn't try to take it over for that alone.

2) i've noticed a few times that a lost.swf file will go up with a more popular song (eq van morrison's want a danish) but it was changed to the black screen heartbeat very soon after. this could reflect some project manager saying "hey we don't have the rights to that!" the older stuff from obscure 60s groups tends to have less restrictions on use. also the fact that the music is sped up can bee seen as work around for DMCA regulations. they aren't posting the real song but a messed up version of it.

I don't agree - if Disney/ABC owns the site they are responsible for anything on there. We didn't hack our way there - somebody typed in an address into their web browser and a page with the site was there. That's hardly hacking.

Three reasons I think bigspaceship1 MUST be fake:

1. The whois doesn't point to ABC - correct me if I'm wrong but all of the other ABC owned sites do

2. They are using copywritten music on this site - you need rights to that music - are we to believe that they are paying for the right play all of these songs - or that they are transmitting them without having them cleared first?

3. No terms of use - I would be SHOCKED if ABC knowingly had a site out there without a terms of use link. It is a big company - they risk lawsuits every day. There is a reason they have it on all of their sites and no good reason why they would just happen to not have it on this site.

What I am curious about - and maybe some of you who have been around longer than I have can help - is who found the site in the first place? Just think that if this is a prank the person who did it probably went on all of the forums and told them to check out the site. Who was the first person to post on this forum about it - how many posts did they have in the past (if it is their only post that is a dead give away)??? Did they all show up at the same time on various forums with similar wording. Another clue that this is a scam.

I'm keeping an open mind here guys but it doesn't add up for me.

i wasn't the first (i don't think) but i found it on my own once someone pointed me to thehansofoundation.org site. this was on oct 7th. i found the https link AND the two sites were at 66.132.217.121 until bigspaceship1.com moved to 64.207.186.80

i re-did the visual route report the next day and it overwrote the first report, but i haven't printed any other reports since then so the table.txt file in my visual route directory stayed current.

* i edited out the LAN ips you don't need to know them.

this is from my post about about this very topic on the oceanic forum:

on oct 8th, i used visual route on thehansofoundation.org and it came back as as bigspaceship1.com

at that time they were both at the same ip, since then bigspaceship1.com has moved to a new ip. if bigspaceship1.com were contracted to created the hansonfoundation.org website, that could explain how the bigspaceship1.com text got left in the https document root.

This is not entirely true - the terms of use in most cases protects their right to sue YOU. If the hold the copyrights to the images and do not care about their use elsewhere, then its not a problem to forgo the TOC.

As to the licensing of music for broadcast etc. by the major networks and their affiliates,

"The ABC, CBS and NBC networks have negotiated blanket license agreements with ASCAP for their network programming. ASCAP and PBS have a blanket license that covers both the network and all PBS affiliates' programming."

This covers royalties for broadcast. Since the music is not in a downloadable form, they are covered and the royalties to ASCAP are already paid.

they are putting out mono sped up version of music, that might be a work around. and there was a van morrison song up for about 15 minutes the other day and it came down quick and was replaced by the black-screen heartbeat file. that could have been because someone complained.

When I went to the BigSpaceShip1 for the 1st time it was the only SWF playing at the time and for the next 2 hours! before I gave up on it and went to sleep. I just did a Print Screen to copy the SWF PIC and Pasted into PAINT Program. After that I just kept fiddling with the colors.

The Note and Map do not give a Specific Date to meet. Maybe we should all meet there for the season finale! LOL

i forget what the term is, but this picture is one of the ones that if you stare at it correctly, it goes 3-D. When you do this the 5 heads on the right and left float behind and lower than the 10 heads in the middle. Did anyone else notice this? My best guess is that whatever is behind the heads is a map of the island, but i'm not too sure of this. let me know what you see.

creative font design is hard. my hat goes off to people who can "icon"-ise an image or a thought into so few pixels. i've never liked the idea of stealing fonts. but i don't want to spend $49 to find out if 2FENO6 means anything in that font as one of those pictogram-thingys. if anyone already has that font (or better yet, a font similar to that, designed by Matthew Bardram and can check? you could let us know if it WAS something by posting a jpg with 2FENO6 in that font.)

I was thinking of trying to find the right shade of red plastic to view it thru. I was thinking maybe it would work like those old cereal box decoders where the message was much easier to see when the red in the message is countered by the filter. Might be worth a shot if anyone has some red lens filters lying around. Or maybe Photoshop could simulate the effect with a layer. I tried using a piece of red glass but it wasn't the right shade of red.

This goes along with the fact that the bigspaceship and hanso pages are linked to the smartdust page, and linking this to the nanotechnology stuff in Michael Crichton's Prey.

not quite sure what you mean. if you don't have a screen cap progran then download this http://lxicon.perception.net/lview.zip extract the files to any directory and run the Lviewpro.exe to start the program. (this is an old image viewer from 1996 basically a notepad for most image formats)
use the menus : [Edit]->[Capture]->[Desktop] and when the image is captured. save it somehwere on the web and post the url. we might be able to help you better.

* if you are going to keep the program in whatever directory you extracted it into use the [File] menu -> [Properties] -> [Install](Tab) and click the [create] button under "Task bar group" that will put shortcuts into your start menu to launch lview and (if you also checked off the "overwrite extensions set by other apps" check box before clicking the [create] button) register most image file types to LView.
if done correctly you can then double click most any image file and it will open very quickly in lview (MUCH faster than IE or phototshop or mspaint)

** i've used LView for screen caps and batch jpeg compression for almost 10 years now and it's never let me down.

Some other stuff they did to keep the game hard to solve was using ficticious names in domain registrations, etc. In this case, if ABC went and registered all the domains for this online game, it would be easy to find them and 'solve' the game with less effort.

On that very note, they have a link to other online games (http://www.cloudmakers.org/othergames/) that are similar. Hmmm....very peculiar...there seems to be ANOTHER online game for ANOTHER J.J. Abrams show....verrrrrrry interesting....

Just been looking at it for a while, but the best I've come up with are:

- map of Western Europe, but slightly altered. I can see what resembles Spain in the bottom left and Italy poking out towards the bottom, and also a lot of lines across the middle that could be borders to different countries? No? Meh.

- Are they rabbits or otters or something? If they're rabbits, it could be a reference to Watership Down, especially with the red colour seemingly 'drowing' a picture behind them, the red being blood.

Gives me a headache after a while though, hmm.

Last week we all got to see not only more of the hatch (which an internet nerd has analyzed and created an entire map to), but the "orientation tape" from the Dharma Initiative. We learn that the hatch is a part of the Dharma Initiative, which was created by Gerald and Karen De Groot with funding by the Hanso group back in the 80's. Well, the Hanso group actually has its own website over at http://www.thehansofoundation.org/ (I have confirmed myself that this is in fact an ABC-created site, not a fan site). Interesting reading to say the least. Especially when you go look at their list of active projects. If you pay attention, at the bottom there is a hidden link for the Dharma Initiative and when you click on it, you get to see the entire orientation tape. Oh but there’s more. Cybersleuths have found if you try and access the secured version of the site (meaning you add an S to the http in the web address), you get a page that simply says http://www.bigspaceship1.com/. Go there and you will be even more freaked out. Weird audio and morse code in the title bar. What does it all mean? That is, other than telling me I should stop being such a dork and get out more and enjoy the fall air. Maybe get some cider. Well, that’s enough geek chatter for one week. On to the recap.

I am looking for ways to prove the site is a fake/fansite. I did contact via e-mail somebody from Disney/ABC about the site - I hope to hear back from them soon with some sort of official word.
Question for ya:
1.) Do you believe the http://www.thehansofoundation.org/ is authentic?

2.) Does the SWF movie work for you/anyone under the Dharma Initiative?
It won't work for me.

3.) If #2, is NO, don't you think they would have fixed it already if it isn't working?

I think they left the SWF file blank on purpose so we would take the site apart with a fine tooth comb trying to find it; and hence found the BigSpaceShip1 site.

It may not be ABC, but they could sure hire a advertising company to do some Viral Advertising for them. Someone mentioned they did they same kind of campagne with Alias?

1) yes. it is registered to abc.

2) no. i doubt it would. there are better ways to legitimately restrict access. it's just a dead end used to dramatic effect. The show is all about suspence and mystery after all.

1. Yes I do - its whois says ABC and there is a terms of use link on it.

2. No I don't recall it ever working for me.

3. Yes - I would think somebody Disney Internet would have fixed it by now but it proves nothing to me.



I personally believe that somebody either hacked into the hanso site or has access to it and planted the bigspaceship1 onto it. I also think the same person is messing with all of you and laughing every step of the way.

Try using Firefox...it won't load with IE for some reason, but it does with Firefox. I also have a copy of it on my site if you just want to download it...

Iusedtohavealife....don't hate me, I'm not bashing your favorite site - I was just referring to the fact that they said "the hanso site is real and I can prove it" the whole thing about it being on VH1 was not my point, just that they said they could prove the site is really ABC's
