I can't remember from season one if Locke ever knew of Kate's criminal past. The look on Kate's face was priceless. :o Can someone shed some light on this?

Probably spread when Sawyer told Michael and the people around at the time

Kate's a convict. I think she was just surprised and pissed that Locke would use that to get Desmond to have her be tied up instead of himself. She was shocked also because she prolly expected Locke to readily be the one to get tied up.
The bigger question is why not tie both of them up?

Yeah, but I think he was counting on her being able to escape, and gauranteed it by sticking a knife in her pocket.

I think that was kind of a lame sequence. First Locke says "yeah, I'm him", and Desmond figures out he's full of crap two seconds later. Then when Locke says Kate's a fugitive, Desmond just completely goes along with it.

I thought the same thing, but then gave in to the thought that Desmond has been there a while and may not be as intuitive as he would otherwise.

Locke knew Kate was a convict because Hurley told him in the last season - I believe it was in one of the "Exodus" episodes - right before they go into the jungle with Danielle.

I agree that it was one of the less believable moments in the ep. The writers normally do a superb job of keeping things "real" in such an unreal place. Know what I mean? I mean, utimately as mysterious as LOST is, this story is about the characters, so lame sequences are very detracting. If the characters were not believable and it was all just about sci-fi-mystery-psycho-thriller stuff, it would be call Star Trek: Space Island.
So, the scene was weak. I had to convince myself to buy into it by believing that the look of disbelief on Kate's part, combined with her lack of rebuttal, lead a shaky Desmond to believe every word of it. It also helps that (once again) Locke was doing nothing more than telling the truth, and perhaps Desmond WAS intuitive enough to pick that up. Still, weakest part in this show in several episodes (since probably "Moth" where Kate comes and asks everyone why they weren't digging and they all give her a blank stare and then join her in digging out an admittedly unstable cave...didn't buy that one either. Hmm...they both involve Kate.).

Yes Locke knew Kate was a convict from the Born to Run episode where Michael was poisoned and Hurley and Locke were standing there talking about it, Jack was up and they debate who could have done it...Hurley speaks up and says "you don't think it was Kate do you because of the fugitive thing?" and then he realizes that Locke doesn't know and get mad because he can't keep up with all the secrets!

I kind of gave Desmond the benefit of the doubt that he was going to question them separately to see if their stories matched up. It wouldn't be a garuntee of the truth but it would be somewhat more convincing than letting them hear each others stories. But Jack showing up interupted that.

That is an excellent point. I mean, he really wasn't doing anything with Locke other than questioning him prior to Jack's arrival, and our pre-knowledge of Jack's arrival perhaps fed a sense of the need for Locke as a prisoner, when in fact that need was not yet present. I think you are on to something.

I think he was just in a hurry. He needed one of them tied up and he didn't care which. He had to hold the gun on one of them, and he knew the beep-beep-type-the-numbers thing was about to happen. (I don't think hot chicks are at the top of Desmond's priority list anyway.)

Omg you guys, HILARIOUS! I couldn't stop laughing from that! I never questioned that before but now, if I watch that episode again, I won't be able to stop laughing!

Oh, I also believe that Locke didn't want her to try and escape because he wants to get some answers so when Locke said that Kate was a convict, I think she had some idea that he didn't want to leave just yet. The reason that Desmond didn't interrogate both of them at the same time is because he didn't want them to abuse they situation and try escaping or empowering him.
