View Full Version : Kate in the food pantry...

I noticed two things that stood out (after many pauses).
First, the boxes she's stacking to get into the ventilation shaft say "legumes" on them. In french, the word "legumes" means "vegetables".
Second, the candy bar she eats says "Apollo Candy". A google search reveals that this is a real candy bar, but was discontinued. This Wiki entry has the bearest of details about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candy_bar But we see that it was created by a Japanese company.
Third, we couldn't see her breath, so it's not a refridgerator(?)
So anyway, maybe this is nothing, but she has some boxes written in French, along with boxes of discontinued Japanese-manufactured candy, which appear to taste good, even though it's old and not in a refridgerator.

well candy, chocolate in particular doesn't tend to spoil easialy.
As someone who's worked with a walk in refridgerator before, you can't see your breath. A freezer, yes. Fridge, no.

Grain legumes include beans, lentils, lupins, peas, peanuts and soybeans. And I think I saw Apollo candy bars for sale at the World Market the other day. They had a bunch of weird Japanese candy there.
I didn't get the vibe that it was a refridgerated room because of the air duct Kate went through. Those were all dry goods in that room. Des probably had a fridge, and he can reconstitute things with water (powdered milk, powdered eggs, powdered smoothie)

all the food at the far end of the room has the following numbers on them.
DI 9FFTR731. its not a upc or datestamp because different foods have the same number. All I can think is that DI stands for Dharma Industries/Incorporated...any other ideas?

Does the candy bar that Kate ate look like the same one that Boone was trying to give Shannon way in the beginning when he was telling her that they were gonna be there for a while. She was like 'As if i'm gonna start eating chocolate'.....

Interesting catch. Dharma -- your one-stop shopping place? Maybe they either they specialize in foods with long shelf lives or they specially treat foods for some reason? For instance, I've heard that the military Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) have additives to keep soldiers from getting diarrhea or an excessive case of horniness while in the field

Legumes, as someone else already indicated, is a word in english as well.

Some continuity errors with the Legume boxes as well. In the first shot of the storage room, the three boxes to the left have no labels on their right side (minute 26:59), in the second shot, we see the room in reverse angle, (minute 27:04) facing Kate. The boxes now have the "Legumes" labels on their right side.
Later, when Kate stacks the boxes to reach the ventilation system (minute 28:03), the labels are on the left side again.

No, that was a Snickers or something - can't remember exactly but I remember it being familiar.

Looks to me there's a "CT" before the 23, which would mean OCT 23 04.

Anyone else think of the pantry that Kate kept her money in at the farmers house. (Episode 3) Didn't all that stuff have 2004 exp. dates too?

When they showed all the food in I had this random thought -
Wonder if there's any Peanut Butter she can bring back to Claire & Charlie?
( couldn't help it  )

I think something to think about is the types of food we found in the pantry. Checking screenshots from other threads showed olives, apple sauce, and a bunch of other supplies that seemed a little unnecessary for survival. It almost seemed like the things you would find in a restaurant kitchen, not a bunker used for long-term survival. Just a thought.

Does the amount of food that was in the pantry lead anyone to reconsider whether Desmond was being supplied from the outside?
I was definitely in the camp who believed that he was getting regular supplies, but when he was quizzing Locke, Desmond certainly acted like he hadn't seen or heard from anyone in a long time.

i dont think those items are unnecessary. just general items u would find in a common pantry that doest perish very easily.
and yes there were indeed peanuts in the pantry, and kate could of brought some back for claire and make their own peanut butter.

Going back and watching the episode, there was a jar of olive oil, a big container of ketchup, a jar of olives, a jar of vegetable oil, etc. There was a lot of shelf space dedicated to ingredients in cooking. Which leads me to think that this bunker was not designed for just survival. Yes, I realize that the washer/dryer, exercise bike, etc. also do that, but the items in the pantry suggest that this is either not a long-term experiment (which it clearly is some sort of), or it is an ongoing one with outside contact.
If it was designed for the long-term, you wouldn't waste valuable storage space with such things as olives. I understand that these foods don't perish easily, but if you are needing to stock a pantry for the long haul, you'd do it with foods that are absolutely necessary.
The thing that gets me is that Desmond seemed to have been there for awhile - with no human contact.

They could've stocked the pantry with dried food if it was a survival thing but that stuff is almost unrecognisable to the viewing public. Big jars of pickled things are so much more aesthetic.
One more note, "legumes" are extremely perishable, any longer than a week or two and you've got a pantry full of compost.

As far as the food goes...Well if they are supplying artificial sunlight, ping pong, a lava lamp and a record player it shouldnt come as a surprise to anyone that they would provide food other than that which is absolutely neccessary fro survival. It seems as if the apartment is meant to mimic some of the comforts of home so it makes sense that there are food items that YOU dont deem necessary.

Seeing how weird this company seems to be, wouldn't it be interesting if the food wasn't just NORMAL food. Like, what if the food was specifically created for whatever project is going on inside the hatch. Perhaps Kate will have some weird/interesting side effects after eating the Appolo candy bar. And she has more of them for later.
Simple bit of comic relief? Most likely.
Something more? Wouldn't surprise me.

Yes I addressed that in my post. It seems as though this place is not merely for survival - it's for living. There's a distinct difference.
My point was that there were numerous items. Therefore, not only are you taking up shelf space, you are limiting the quantity of each item you can have in there. So it seems to me that this place was designed to be a "come and go" type place.
Fallout shelters, on the other hand, wouldn't take such liberties. You'd have the supplies that were absolutely neccessary. Desomd acts as though the outside world has been eradicated, like from a nuclear bomb or something.

In the interest of trying to tie one thing to another and confuse the hell out of everyone, the swan in the center of the Dharma logo can be conected to the Apollo candy bar.
"In ancient Greece the swan was linked to Apollo, the god of the Sun."

Presumably because the show is set in 2004, so any scenes set shortly before the flight are likely to contain produce that is not out of date yet?
(They were only there 44 days after all)

Dude, get your double posting sorted out. I agree with the show being set in 2004
I am not a dude, and I was responding to two different people, quoting from different posts that were on different pages.
I don't always post a response straight away (I went and checked for a definition of legumes to link to, for example), or take some time over writing the response, so how am I supposed to know whether someone else responded to a thread between the time it took to write the post and the time I post my reply?
(Without having to open additional windows, trying to find my last post - which is not always easy, as I am in the UK and often end up reading through many pages and responding to posts a few pages before the end - and potentially risk losing my response because I end up closing the wrong window etc.)
I edit my posts about 5 times on average, so I am not too lazy to edit instead of post a new post, and I do add to my posts if I have something to add, even when not related, as long as what I am responding to is on the same page, so I can copy & paste without losing my post or forgetting who I was trying to quote from.
But when I'm responding to several different people, and in particular to different aspects of a topic (so they have nothing to do with each other), on different pages within the same thread, I am unable to do so without completely losing my train of thought.
As I said elsewhere, what is the point of having 'Repoly' buttons with a quote functionality, if we're supposed to manually copy and paste stuff into one single post, potentially creating confusion because unrelated aspects of a topic are discussed, and different people are quoted in the same post?
I will try to concatenate posts in future, but I can't give any guarantees on whether or not I will be able to continue making any sense [that is, if I am making sense to start with, which is doubtlessly questionale :p] if I have to continually go back and forth between different pages of the same thread.

Many types of candy(and packaged foods) don't actually have an expiration date on them, but rather a code that you have to know how to read.
