I thought it was very interesting that Desmond was surprised that there was still a Sydney and a Los Angeles. He said "there's still a world?" or something, right? So he's in the hatch because somebody thought the world was going to end? And if Locke isn't the "him" he was looking for, who was he looking for? Someone maybe to tell him that everything's okay and he can come out now?

Desmond: So you were traveling from Sydney to Los Angeles?
Locke: Yeah.
Desmond: So the world's still out there?

It definitely happened. It was when Locke was sitting at the table next to the blinds and was explaining to Desmond about the plane crash. Desmond definately seemed surprised there was still a "world" outside the hatch, and about that time Locke asks Desmond if that is why the quarantine is on the inside of the hatch.

I know I was wondering about that too. So he has this stash of food and such down there, so he has actually BEEN down there that long. And then ask if there was really a world still out there or whatever was acutally said. Makes me feel a bit sorry for the guy having to stay down there all that time.

desmonds bunker does have a whole "doomsday bunker" vibe around it. maybe he's been down there cus he thought the world was coming to an end. wait...that makes too much sense for round here.

I had the caption on. I believe it even said "they're" and not "the world". Could be wrong though.

My son heard, "world", but I told him that he said, "So, they're all still out there?". Locke had just told Desmond of the crash, so he's asking about the other survivor's still being 'out there' (alive on the island). Then, doesn't he ask about any of them being 'sick'?

I really didn't think he said 'world'...*shrugs*

That's what I was thinking, which might explain that countdown that resets itself to 108 when you enter the numbers.

Okay, here come the soundfiles.

Desmond is DEFINITELY saying "So the world's still out there?" But hear for yourself:

The whole world conversation between Locke and Desmond (http://www.thepwnage.de/locke_desmond.mp3)

Only Desmonds "So the world's still out there? (http://www.thepwnage.de/world.mp3)

Guess CC was wrong there... :)

Keep in mind that there were differerences between what the audience heard and what the caption said when there were questions about what Boone heard on the drug plane radio. one of the producers said something to the effect: `only trust what's on the show itself,' so if people heard `world,' i'd tend to go with that
