This Joke was actually told in one of the episodes in season 1. When Michael was in the hospital he wanted to send a card to Walt but didnt know what to write. So the Nurse told him to draw a picture and put in a joke "what did the snowman say to the other snowman?" The answer was Freeze.

I wonder if that was significant to the storyline. I wonder who is "him". It seems the smallest statement, such as the one made by the nurse, has a greater meaning on this show. I am impressed that you remembered that!

I have heard that before, the riddle, but thought there was some "secret" code type answer. Hmm... Does this mean he could be looking for Mike? Walt didn't get the letters until after he met his dad. Oh... so many possibilities.

I always thought that this was a kind of code question that allows Dharma people to identify who is with them and who isn't. I think that Locke knew a response to this question because he was meant to take charge of the Hatch when he first got there.

But what is confusing is why Locke refused to answer this question in the second episode yet when he was on the beach with a drunken Desmond in the last episode it took him no time to come up with an answer?

he didn't know the answe at the beach with desmond did he? i thought he asked desmond "so, what does one snowman say to the other" and desmond replies "smells like carrots". i think thats the correct quote. i haven't checked but it's very similar to that.
