Desmond, The Phoenix and the location of the island

I found some pretty thing about the possible location of the Island... five months ago, a guy called "1 Lucky Texan" wrote this post on that forum :*

The use of the numbers for earth coordinates has been discussed and is an interest of mine as well. Though I place the island at lat 4 S by long 162 E (from 'the numbers')well within the reach of Danielle's science vessel out of Tahiti and the '1000 miles off course 6 hours in' statement from the airline pilot before his - um - demise. That position figures well with Sayid's warning to sunbathing Shannon that theyy are "very near the equator" as well as one of bottle messages at the oceanic flight 815 website that reports they are SW of hawaii and NE of Australia. And though other folks here are tired of me mentioning this, they would also be near enough to Howland Island that Amelia earhart and Fred Noonan may figure into the story somehow. posters Blamo and razor and others have created detaled maps plotting likely courses, etc. Try doing a search.
Anyway, I say there's a very good chance the island is near Kiribati, Phoenix and Line islands

I also think that Kiribati islands may be the right location. These are my clues in Episode 2X1 :

* Desmond had a "Phoenix" bird on his shirt when he met Jack in the stadium.
* There's a sun and a wave on the Hatch's wall

A bird of fire (Phoenix) + Sun + Wave + Red Color. And a group of islands in the Kiribatis is called "Phoenix". There's only one volcanic island in the Kiribati islands called Banaba. It was occupied by the Japanese Army during WWII. And it's known for its phosphate-mining. Its inhabitants were forced to flee elsewhere because of phosphate-mining, because the ground was breaking down...

The Phoenix bird is also a symbol of rebirth in different cultures and religions.

For the Alchemists, Phoenix is a part of the PHILOSOPHERS STONE (read Harry Potter ;) ).

The PHILOSOPHERS STONE is the symbol for the Alchemist quest for transformation and spiritual illumination. This is called the "Great Work" or someting like the "Phoenix Work" (L'Oeuvre du Phoenix in french).

The "Great Work" is divided in two stages :

* the "Black stage"(Nigredo) : putrefaction
* the "White stage" (Albedo) : purification

Then it leads to the "red stage" (Rubedo) and "golden stage"... this the path towards purification and "rebirth".

I was always thinking that the island was fictional, but I guess there is a possibility that it could take place on what is suppose to be a real island.

If you go to Google maps, and enter the numbers as coordinates, it located a ocean positon a ways NE of Austrailia.

That picture can't be right, either the scale is wrong or its just a wrong picture, because there is no island that large in the middle of the pacific

This isn't a single island but an archipelago.

I don't think you can really take that as a location of the island though. MOst of the passengers did not know about the problem with the radar, or that the pilot was forced to turn around and head for Figi. Natually, considering their destination, they would assume they were somewhere between Hawaii and Austrialia. They are actually probably further east then they realize because of their lack of information.

Did Jack, Kate or Charlie ever tell anyone what the pilot said about being off course and having turned back towards Figi? I can't remember, but if he didn't, I would say the person who wrote that note doesn't have the information needed to be accurate about their position in the Pacific.

"L'Oeuvre du Phoenix" translates to "the egg of the phoenix". Since a phoenix is supposedly immortal (reborn from the ashes each time it dies and bursts into flame) a phoenix egg would, presumably, be incredibly valuable.

Would tie in with all the rebirth analogies going on in Lost.

No, it doesn't. It's a wrong translation. In french, "Oeuvre" = "Work". For example, "l'Oeuvre de Dieu" is "God's Work".

It's "oeuf" which means "egg" ;)
