View Full Version : "Make Your own Kind of Music"
Does anyone else think this is refering to Man of Science, Man of Faith, Science would be Jack's type of music and Faith would be Locke's?
I just found the lyrics on the Web, and a line is
The lonliest kind of lonely
So that would be saying that Desmond was actually alone, and didn't have a roomate as it has been suggested
yeah....i think he was pretty alone judging by what he had going on there...his set up and stuff...i also think that the music was chosen for that reason...and to make a point, as it was played twice wasnt it?

Okay, you kids need an old person to help you out here. As far as I know, "Make Your Own Kind of Music" was not a TV theme. It might have been used in a TV commercial (as are many old 60s-type songs to appeal to Baby Boomers so they'll go buy the product.) At the time it was recorded, it wasn't a *big* Mamas and Papas hit. Their biggest one was probably "California Dreamin'." "Make Your Own..." was typical of a 60s idealism song--the term at the time was "Do your own thing." It was all part of the Baby Boomer rebellion thing, turning against traditional (read 50s) society and its rules. ("Don't trust anyone over 30.") Bra burning, draft card burning, long hair, the whole hippy thing was part of this "rebellion." Environmentalism also sprang from this culture--fixing what the evil traditional culture had wrecked. I know. I was there.
The song suggest to me that Desmond is an idealist. He thinks he's down there doing something beneficial to society. Desmond is a has-been hippy type. For that matter, Locke is starting to look like one, too.
I was ctually thinking of checking out the complete lyrics to the song to made some significance to the song. I found the last couple lines inetersting:
"Even if nobody else sings along
If nobody else sings along"
Jack wanted everyone to stay together. However, Locke did his own thing and went back to the hatch. Then after that, Kate did her own thing and went after Locke. Although the song isn't really relevant to these characters, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.

I cropped the clip and extracted the sound. Here it is MusicAndKateYelling.wma (http://www.friendlyshare.de/files/1MusicAndKateYelling.wma)
Hope this isn't already done. If it is, then sorry. Couldn't find it in this thread, and the other one was locked.

You make a very good point there, and most likely unlike charlie's song (You all everybody) which was just a spur of the moment, I have a feeling this song has a much deeper meaning into the character of desmond and maybe will even be his theme song throughout the season? (if he lives that long...)

In the Oct. 17-23 TV Guide it mentioned that it was Mama Cass Elliott's song from the 'Mamas and the Papas'. On the Carpenter's website it has the link to the people who wrote the song (Barry Mann and Cynthia Wall) and on that link it tributes the song to Cass Elliott.
Other hits which they were associated through 1970 include Max Frost and The Troopers "The Shape of Things to Come," Cass Elliot's "It's Getting Better" and "Make Your Own Kind of Music," and B.J. Thomas' "I Just Can't Help Believing."

Ep 2.1 aired here in Oz last night. I believe that the version used was the original by Mama Cass, but it was the theme to the Carpenter's 1971 TV series of the same name. Powerful & effective in the Lost context...

Yes we here in Aus have just seen the first episode a week ago and i loved the song to pieces!!! I downloaded it and i can't get enough. Every time someone walks past my room they groan becuase that song in playing. Hehe:p
I love the part where Jack is looking around and all of a sudden the music starts. And the opening scene with it was smart too. I really like the idea of the song and i, too, feel it will have someonething to do with one of our characters (Desmond is the mot probable option).
