Long time reader, first time poster.
Don't think this has been mentioned anywhere, but am I the only person who thinks when Desmond told Jack 'you have to lift it up', he wasn't really relating to his ankle. There was an awfully long silence.
I don't really know what else he could have been referencing, maybe the hatch (have to lift it up), or maybe something has to be lifted up in a future episode.
Just a though

I think there is a thread on this already. But you're right, the quote must have had double meaning! We've all been trying to figure it out! Welcome!

I had a dream that night that he was talking about lifting up a whale that falls on the island. it was after watching the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie though...isn't it amazing what we dream about? lol.

yeh i think it does have a double meaning but there aint any clues as to what 'it' could be...

I am thinking it could also mean to lift the spirit of the person up. As jack never was optimistic before and later on learned to always be optimistic.Hurley thinks it still sucks though :p

Yeah, I automatically thought of something said in Church, about "lifting your hearts up to the Lord." In other words, having faith, and not carrying all the burdens alone.

DommyFan, my thought of the exact same thing when it was said.

Lol Ericcoaster... my buddies rented that movie yesterday and i ended up watching it too. I just thought it'd say that.. and i hated it lol. Also, wasn't the song at the end of that movie "Make your own Kind of Music" like the one at the beggining of this episode?.. except in different lyrics. Sorry, kind of a bit out of topic.

haha, this has gone way off topic
i really dont think he is talking about lifting spirits...i just get the feeling it is something physical, and ive been trying to figure it out ever since, im sure something will be found in future episodes that this will relate back to

Not saying that it won't be something physical, but for the sake of double meaning, here's an interesting note...
In classic Hindu dance, Moksha (liberation/release from the life/death/rebirth cycle) is represented by "lifting up" of the right leg, kinda like Desmond told Jack to do after he sprained his right ankle. Moksha can be possibly referenced in the episode by the word "OUT" on the mural as well as the number 108 which has great significance in spiritual exercise needed to achieve Moksha.
Again, this is only for reference of possible double meanings but I thought I'd list it as an interesting alternative to more general lifting up of the spirit stuff since I'm really starting to think that part of the plot is that there is some cycle they are a part of. Really it's just fun to speculate on.

5150..... *sighs*... ok then..
I've posted this elsewhere, but when Desmond says "You have to lift it up", I think he's referring to Jack's faith (hence the title of the episode) because Jack had just been telling Desmond how hopeless his patient's case was, and that there was no way he could keep his promise to fix her. Jack, however, is not a 'Man of Faith'. He's a 'Man of Science', so Desmond got a blank stare in response to the comment. Rather than explain himself, Desmond changed its meaning, focusing on Jack's injured ankle.

attention should be given to when he said "what if she did?" reffering to Sarah and what if she did make it and did get fixed. look what happened, Jack and Sarah got married. he seems to be one of those faith people like Locke.

Ive said this in another thread, but its relevent here too. When Desmond says "you have to lift it up" he watched Jacks face VERY intently. I think he was waiting for some sort of recognition from Jack. When there was none, Desmond changed it to meaning Jacks ankle. Now, why would he be looking for recognition form Jack?

Yeah, my first thought was of a spiritual lifting up. Don't know what HE meant, though.

Well, shortly after being told that, Jack "lifts up" a bedsheet to see Sarah's wiggling toes (a "miracle", since she can now walk, like Locke can now walk).

Ah, yes. That's a good observation. Jack had to lift up the sheet in order to see the miracle. I don't know, though, if Desmond meant literally "lift the sheet."

Reading this, I was thinking about the he says "you have to lift it up" and gets a blank look from Jack...then changes it to mean his ancle...it's entirely possable that...
Desmond was suppose to meet someone at the stadium that day. He didn't know who, or why they'd be there...but eventually, it turned out to be the person responsable for him being on the island. As they'd never seen eachother before, they developed a pass-phrase to make sure it actully was the other. that pass-phase was "you have to lift it up" Desmond suspected Jack was his contact, and said that.
What do you think?

Hmmmm.... that's food for thought. I know I'm gonna a lot of flack, but I really think there's a time-warp/travel thing going on around here. I'm probably all wet, but that's a fun theory to explore.

I also agree that Desmond changed his meaning. Great point Quiet. Also something to note....Locke used a similar phrase last season. He told Charlie to "Look up" to find his guitar. For him it was literal, but at first Charlie took it as spiritual. Don't really know if it ties in, but with this show, sometime I believe they are tied together somehow...

Off topic, but last night I had a dream about a LOST 2. There was another plane crash and it was on the same island. Jack was in the plane again and Hurley came later on via a government submarine. Hurley went around telling people that they would be fine since Jack was there. The government people took roll of everyone who survived and then left along with Hurley, who told Jack that he would use his millions of dollars to fund a rescue mission. Jack found Lock who had stayed with Desmond. They sat around the opening of the hatch and drank beer. Then I woke up.

My first thought on hearing this was the way Christians, especially eveangelical Protestants, talk about "lifting up someone in prayer". My first interpretation was that Desmond was asking Jack to pray for Sara.
Hollywood is usually virulently anti-Christian, but LOST seems to be an exception--look at the Charlie confession scenes, which seem sincere and not mocking.
