View Full Version : Desmond's water supply
Remember that weird wire thing that sayid/hurley found that went out into the sea then went inland? It ended up going into the ground. You can see where this is going can't you?
What do you think of this theory?

I think you've never seen a water pipe in your life?
Hey this is Lost man! Crazier things have happened on the island.

It just makes more sense to me for this to be a power cable, that's all. I mean there's fresh water on the island, and if it is a bio hab module, it will have some sort of water recycling system of its own. The power on the other hand has to come from somewhere else...
Maybe he has a generator? I can't see how a wire can get power from the sea. Unless its using the waves for energy which really wouldn't work.

Its most likely that if it is a power cable that its to something off of the island not the power cable to the island.

Power cables transport electricity, they don't generate it...

i might be able to give explanation for everything even if it's not correct... where does he get washing liquid? Maybe the furniture and all other things he has, he got it from the ship or plane... where would you get washing liquid?????

Is that an explanation? Seems more like it's more questions?

Well, given all the black smoke on that island there has to be some pretty hefty generators providing power to these living quarters. Once you have power, you can either boil your sea water, have some sort of advanced desalinization process or pump it from a fresh water source on the island.

which is exactly my point if you read it.

Err... yes but you seem to have missed the point that a cable could be transporting power TO the island.
Perhaps there is a generator on the mainland/'outside' or under the sea somewhere (would you trust a bunch of guys on their own with a nuclear reactor directly accessible to him?) and the hatch just has a backup generator?

Maybe he makes his own?

lol, he could use the bike thing to generate electricity
Don't you guys remember when Kate and Sawyer went and found a big lake where they also found the dead people on the bottom and the gun case if I'm correct. Maybe he transfers it from there.

Most schools and large factories sometimes have water refinery plants in them, so maybe he recycles his water. And i've always wondered about the cord going out to sea, why would they have a power cord submerged in water?

Because it would be awkward have to run it above the sea, when you can comfortably bury an insulated cable along the sea bed.

Will he really need power from somewhere else. The island is always sunny. SOLOR POWER.

Naw, the underground quarters were probably built before solar power. Plus, there is too much foliage, the solar panels would have to be higher up and therby noticeable.
The structure is powered by generator. Thus the mechanical noises we hear, and the black smoke we see.

Did you see any solar panels?

See, it's not the question of water or electricity that confuses me. I mean... even the Islanders have found fresh water, I'm sure he found some way to pump it in. Plus the wire could explain the electricity... my question...
where in the world does he get dish soap? last I checked, that didn't grow on trees.

I was under the impression that some of the scenes from the beginning, where everything was neat and new, weren't exactly set *now*, but that's just my interpretation.

There is a lot of that island we haven't seen yet. Solar panels could be there somewhere.

I thought that when Sayid and Charlie met up with Danielle (when she had stolen the baby) they found the source of the black smoke. It was some kind of metal basin that had logs burning on it and was on a beach. That's why Charlie was able to accuse her of being looney and "causing the smoke herself".
I agree that to power the various electrical items would take a fair amount of juice, thus the need for a BIG generator. But i dont think i heard sounds that were loud enough to belong to a generator. If you have ever heard one (even the small ones) are easily as loud as a lawnmower. Perhaps its tucked away somewhere insulated, so it can't be heard.
If there is anything down there producing "exhaust", it would definitely have to be flushed or the inhabitants would suffocate. But we haven't seen a chimney or flume of any sort emitting black smoke. Keep in mind the underground place (if airtightly "quarantined") would need breatheable OXYGEN, and some sort of air circulation to go with it. Either it would have canisters of oxygen (unlikely for an extended underground stay cuz they would (eventually) need to be refilled or replaced), or fresh air from the island (unlikely due to the quarantine aspect of the island air). Somehow though, they guy down there was breathing fine enough to do an entire cardio work out.

Exactly, she caused the smoke herself. But she probably saw the same black smoke at some point in time that Locke et. al. saw when they were running from the "monster" in Exodus. Since she was loony she created this whole mythos of the black smoke.

You haven't? I beleive it has been said that the "monster" sounded more mechanical in Exodus than it did before.

It seems conceivable that Locke could have fell down an exhaust pipe for the generator when they were running through the jungle.
