When jack enters the hatch we see his key being drawn towards something by what we can assume is a magnet. Could the magnet be powerful enough to take down a plane?

if it was powerful enough to pull the plane down it probably would've ripped the key off his neck instead of moving it ever so slightly

yea really^ unless he could possibly adjust how much force the magnet pulls at

There could be a way for Desmond to control how powerful it is.

maybe it wasnt turned on to its full potential

and remember sayid said the compass locke gave him was broken..... hmmmm

I agree with Andrew.

And I don't think we know yet whether or not it was a magnetic panel, or an entire wall (such as the encaseing of the inside of the hatch is all surrounded by magnetic panelling).

Could the magnet be powerful enough to take down a plane? My idea is that it is a fusion generator who's side effects is an electro-magnetic field which if it was focused enough could pull a plane from the sky...In theory, no one can get them to work.

Another idea is that there was a hole close to Jack in the hatch and the magnet is way outside that hole, so Jack is feeling effects from afar off. Or not...

I agree with Andrew.

but, even if Desmond had used the magnets to pull the plane down, why would he want to do that? He didn't seem to happy to see Jack, Kate, or Locke.

It is some sort of electronic generator, and that could explain why the compass Locke gave Sayid was defective.

I was also thinking about the magnet in reference to "the monster." when locke is being dragged by the monster in the season finale form season1, it sounds like chains are pulling him (or some sort of mechanical sound). then he gets pulled down that hole. what if the magnet controls the "monster", with it's magnetic field pulling the chains down into the hole (that maybe would have lead down into this weird underground lair thing). maybe that's what happens when desmond presses "execute" on his keyboard.

Maye Desmond has no choice..once you get on or go by the island well..there's no getting off or going by..

Brightened screengrab of the magnet:

It does seem rather small to be taking down planes or any of that business. It obviously must have some specific purpose though, of which I certainly cannot even begin to speculate upon.

Yeah, I was talking to my friend, and she said that she thought she saw a hall, or pathway of some sort.. She thought whatever was in there was strong enough to pull the plane down....

But that picture is intersting... Hmm....

Are you kidding? This forum is full of idiots. If he had a magnet powerful enough to pull down a plane from 10,000 feet or whatever it should pull everything, possibly smashing it into the wall, also it would ruint eh computer and all of his equiptment.

I thought it was a door myself..I thought maybe the room Jack went into had the magnet..

While it is possible, with incredibly strong magnetic fields at close range, to magnetize even a frog, primarily, magnets work on ferrous materials, not Aluminum. A magnetic field may have messed with the onboard electronics, reset everyones watches and made it difficult for survivors to make credit card purchases but it would not have directly affected the trajectory, altitude or attitude of the plane.

Or make the tail section break off in mid air. ;)
