Well, I'm thinking there has to be some other way into the hatch. The ONLY reason for the hatch to say "QUARANTINE" on the inside of it is if the OUTSIDE of the hatch is the spot that's being quarantined.
Now, if you only have one or two researchers living in a biodome studying an island, why would you need to put Quarantine on it at all, because those two would KNOW it's quarantined. However, if there were some other way into the hatch, and some way for different and various people to "enter" the hatch, that would explain where you could bring a new appliance in like the washer and dryer. These people also would be the ones that would need to see "Quarantine" in order to know that you don't open that door.
Alot of people I see are saying why are the washer/dryer so new and the computer so old...well, if the computer still works for what it's supposed to work for, there's not really any need to get a new one.
Example, I still use an old Celeron 633 as my own computer. It does what I need it to, so there's no reason for me to buy a new one.

I just posted this in another thread, but in that opening sequence, when Desmond or whoever looks down the tunnels with the telescope, it would make sense that at the end of each tunnel he checks is a hatch like the one the survivors blew open. Your point about some of these hatches leading to quarantined areas versus others that don't makes sense in this context.
As far as the material items he has inside the biodome, we don't know that there isn't a large porthole/entrance on the other side of the island somewhere. If there is, there's no reason Desmond can't be using it to trade with pirates like the ones that stole Walt. That would explain why they have some new stuff, like a mint-condition washer and dryer, but he's still got a 70's era Apple II and no video surveillance equipment (using the telescope & mirror system instead).
They have to inject themselves to provide them immunity against the hallucinogenic bioagent/chemical weapon that's in the jungle, so Desmond and Ethan probably routinely made trips outside.
But this is all speculation.

Just a thought, but do we know that what is in the hatch has anything to do with how long the guy has been in there?
Just think about it...
1-some people just like old music. He may have brought a record player and albums with him because he likes that music. He may have had those for years before entering the hatch. I still have some old albums from when I was a kid.
2-the lava lamp. They were popular again a year or two ago. My kids are 13 and 11 and they both wanted a lava lamp in their rooms. Just got them for christmas about 2 years ago. Lavalamp doesn't necessarily mean old.
3-new things like washers and dryers, and blenders seem to set more of a timeline for me. These are things that you would have stocked new stuff into the hatch. Most washer and dryers and blenders don't hold much sentimental value, so why not get new. The records could be sentimental.
4-The old computers say that this hatch has been there a long time, but doesn't mean that Desmond has been in there the whole time. Perhaps whoever built the hatch installed the computer systems, but the hatch was not always in use. Maybe it was decided by someone, who knows at this point, that they should station someone in this place again, and Desmond came bringing some new equipment with him. Washer/dryer/blender, things to make life easier.
I don't know, I may be way off here, but it's just a thought. Personally, I would have brought a laptop, but that's just me. Maybe Desmond likes old stuff.

I don't think this is true. Everything in the room (except the washer/dryer) was selected to look to be about 1977 vintage, including the computer, blender, exercise bike, turntable, lave lamp, the avocado colored bowl, all of the room design features (dark brown as the primary color was long gone by 1980), the reel-to-reel tapes, even the hairstyle of Desmond all are consistent with the late 1970's.
It is quite clear the creators of the show were trying very hard to say "1977!" (or thereabouts) with the prop selections.
Now the question that I have is how someone who has been living in a hatch for 25 years could be the same person who talks to Jack in the stadium only perhaps 10 years earlier. Either they aren't the same person, or Desmond must really be into the '70's retro hairstyles! :p

This is exactly why I was saying I don't think he has been down there that long.

The washer and dryer may look new but these are similar to the styles of the 70's. I know the style is coming back in so that could be what it is.

There HAS to be a bigger exit. Why? Because it's ridiculous to think they brought all the stuff down there, like sofas, cupboards etc.
Ever moved in a new house? No way, whoever brought all the stuff there used more than such a small hatch.

Random silly connection:
Did anyone else but me think of that cheesy Brendan Frasier & Alicia Sliverstone movie (I can't remember the name but it's on USA every five minutes!) where Frasier and his parents live in a fallout shelter for 30 years? Amidst all the craziness of MoSMoF, I couldn't help but laugh at that.

I wonder if Danielle's "shelter" is connected in some way. She was underground as well and I am also wondering where these tunnels lead. Do they travel through the entire island and if so where are the other entrances?

if you watch it again, you will see that the washer/dryer are absolutely new and not old. they are straight out of a best buy commercial.
as well, not everything in the room is old. when they show the furniture and other things that he uses for personal space, it's all new.

Coming from a mom who does many loads of laundry a day, the washer/dryer look like a brand new pair of front load high efficiency Washer and Dryer that uses very little water to wash your clothes and very little power to dry your clothes. I also noticed the Tide bottle on top, along with a fabric softener bottle, and I think I saw a spray and wash type bottle too, I'll have to go back and take a look. Also, didn't I see him use a foot pump to pump water into the brand new sparkling stainless steel sink to wash his dishes? His shower head looked to me to be the type that everyone used when I lived in australia for a while, the flat head type.

Excellent point. However, it seems to have been coming in little by little over the years.

It a huge shelter, there was that section blocked off. Desmond probably lives in a very small section of the shelter. Just enough room to grow produce, and have a chicken farm.

yeah i think theres something fishy and spiritual about desmond, just the way the miracle of sarah walking again, and the way he phrased things to jack, he said "i was almost a doctor once", as in, a past life or some crap like that, and then he says when he leaves "see you in another life"
im starting to think maybe he has been involved with everyone else's lives, one of the last lines in the episode is jack saying to locke, "so all roads lead here???" and locke just gives him this serious look, and someone said of the possibility of a cloning farm, desmond did get jack to take a sip from his water bottle... but if thats one of the major mind blowing secrets of the show, why the hell would they leak it by those means? thats so lame, so i think its gotta be a joke by the creators of the show to just have fun with all of us and see what we say about it.

BLAST FROM THE PAST..
yeah lol, i've seen that movie, and it was the first thing to pop in my head..
Also in Terminator 3, at the end when they find that hide out shelter in the mountains..
The computers and all other equipment was old also..So they got it ready just in case they needed to use it...

the old computer suggests that the computer is old and would have no factual reference to the age of the hatch. the hatch/living space could be either much older or indeed younger than the computer - i think that we are making many many judgements on assumptions, which is what i think they want us to do
I don't know, I may be way off here, but it's just a thought. Personally, I would have brought a laptop, but that's just me. Maybe Desmond likes old stuff.
i go the impression he wasnt there through choice and accidentally stumbled upon the island and hence probably wouldnt have had a record collection with him or much else for that matter - perhaps he was a washing machine sales man - lol :D
