Why is the Washer & Dryer so modern in the hatch, and everything else is old? They are Whirlpool Duet's. Only could be 3 years old or so.

yes, it doesn't make sense to have an ancient computer and a brand new washer/dryer. There is quite a mix of different eras here. If they're running off of a generator, it's got to be pretty powerful to handle all those things at once.

It's newer than that, they didn't start comming in colors until last year, with that Brown/orange color, blue and something else. And only at Sears. Maybe it was extreame hatch makeover LOL

He has to have an old computer because it probably uses the least amount of energy, just like the new washing machine/dryer is most efficient. You can put 20 pairs of jeans in there! He probably has to use a lot of energy for those lights, and it's probably not an unlimited supply so he has to conserve

Its probably purely aesthetics people...remember this is a television show..meant to entertain...not ALL of it is meant to be analyzed.

If I was doing that particular shot..and I wanted to get acrossed to the audience that this guy was in an apartment of sorts...I would want the washer and dryver to be recognizable. Unfortunatelly all the older consumer level washers and dryers were top loaded...and wouldnt be as recognizable.

Could just be a mistake like Walt needing bateries his nitendo. But I do find it hard to belive that with all the effort going into that room with the older stuff they couldn't find an older looking washer and dryer. And how did he get it down that small hatch??? I have one of those washers and they are heavy and big.

I think they went out of their way to make sure it was a newer model w/d. They could have put a laundry basket on top of an older unit to show what it was if they wanted to go that route.
Edit: At least I hope so. One of the first things I noticed was how those looked like the new Duets.

Well television shows have been known to make mistakes...happens ALL the time. As it was mentioned before..Walt needing batteries for his GBA...well he has a GBA SP which is rechargeable....it doesnt use standard AA batteries.

Yeah, but that's a pretty big mistake. And I always figured Walt's battery line was just an excuse to be listening in on his dad on the phone.

Man, people have screenshots of the medicine he took but not these widely talked-about washer and dryer! Someone get me a pic!

Alright...I keep hearing the thing about the washer and dryer and why if he has those does he have some ancient computer.

Well, maybe all he needs is the ancient computer. One of those, if it ain't broke don't fix it type of deals.

Like myself, I use an old POS Celeron 633...but it does what I need it to do, so there's no reason for me to get a new one.

If the computer that Desmond was using was still doing it's primary function correctly, there's really no reason for anyone to bring a newer computer to him.

Firstly - it has to be intentional. The producers aren't stupid, they know what a cult following LOST has and how every detail will be analyzed.

PROOF: Walt wispered soemthing right? But Shannon didn't hear it, she's just hung up on "Walt was there". Also - the transmission Boone heard. Now Boone's dead, noone knows about it. Both (voice on Boon'es transmission, Walt to Shannon) were hard to hear, could be taken 2 opposite ways. But if they serve no meaning for the story - why throw it out there? FOR US TO ANALYZE! (Clues for us)

Add on how long we've all waited to see what's in the hatch, and I'm convinced it was intentional. I like the conserve-energy theory. I'm also thinking maybe he got (from masters? Captors? ???) One new item a year or every few years, and the washer dryer was recent...

As for how it got in - there must be another way into the hatch, none of his stuff could have come down there...

Also - anyone else think seeing all that stuff in there, that the hatch will be destroyed or blown up or something? And Desmond either becomes like Ethan (dead) or Danielle (occassional guest star)?

They are not Kenmore. Kenmore come in the colors, not Whirlpool. The Whirlpool Duet has been out for around 3 years.

I believe he is using a old computer because that damn thing has a purpose bigger than just for stuff on the island. With all of days viruses/windows crashing systems, I bet that thing can't ever crash or something worldwide will happen. Or, I could be completely wrong. What was up with those old recorders backing up what data? Interesting to say the least.

What doesn't make sense is, why have such a large capacity w/d if it's just him or even one roomie? They could have used an apartment w/d instead, which may be more efficient. (I don't know, someone correct me if I'm wrong)

I agree that the product placement is absolutely intentional. There is a huge mix of generational products down there. The exercise bike, lava lamp, record player, table lamps and window shades all suggest late 60's-early 70's, but the washer/dryer (whose camera shots were way too deliberate for it to be a mistake), the blender, the SimpleHuman Butterfly trashcan (runs about $180 at Bed Bath and Beyond or C&B), are all extremely modern. Those products clearly mean Desmond's got contact with the outside world and is capable of bringing in new products if need be.

You summed up what I was thinking.

On a side note does that mean FedEx stops by that Island (bad joke)

Here's a question, maybe a bit off-topic...

Where the hell is the sunlight coming from through that window??? He's underground, no? You think it's false sunlight? Kind of "The Hive" from Resident Evil, where they make it feel you're in a building in the city?

I like what someone on another thread suggested--extreme hatch makeover!! LOL : )

What kind of light would be bright like the sun--the kind of lights people use in reptile cages--one with UV rays. Definitely not fluorescents--those things make everyone/thing look sick.

Im sure its not for asthetics. This is LOST we're talking about here. The writers/producers know that we analyze something, so I doubt they'd throw something like that in there.

I also wonder where he gets fresh eggs, and fresh food? He seems to have some sort of connection to the outside world. We'll find out in later episodes.

In the dome room you can kind of see it.

If it's some kind of self-sustained ecosystem, he could very well be growing his own organic food products down there. Ever see "Blast from the Past" with Brendan Frasier? :) I have unfortunately...

Haha, it was ok. But it's actually somewhat applicable here. They grew their own food, had false sunlight, access to the outside, etc.

It was cute!!

Remember the writers said we get to see what's in the hatch right off. We won't understand it until epi 3. I have a feeling they have a fully functioning farm (chickens), maybe hatcheries for fish, the dome may be for fruits and veggies or I could be completely wrong... : )

Front loading washing machines did exist in the 1980s (example: Wascomat W74) Maybe the set designers couldn't find an old Wascomat, so they used a new model.

I dont think that it was meant for one person. That dude didnot have the hatch built for him. I will tell you something else I think his power supply is unlimited because I beleive the cable goes directly down to the hatch and he some sort of motor down there that is causing the field

My guess is the same people who put up the antenna are the same people built the hatch long ago maybe 23 years ago or 42 years ago

They are toying with us, it's a game and given the fact that they broke apart a plane and brought it to Hawaii and made it look like a 777 I am sure they could rig up a 70's trash can and washer and dryer. This is why I love this show, they never leave anything to chance, even the batery thing for the GBA makes sense, it's an inside joke thing. Walt heard everything and counted on his Dad not knowing the GBA doesn't need batteries. The Washer and Dryer is a quick way for the writers to tell us that this guy comes and goes, or has access to the real world at will. It's like the others having a working boat but feel no need to escape from the island. The writers of this show are amazing and love to keep us guessing and I wouldn't be suprised if they were trolling these boards.

That being sad why is Desmoind a Record collector is he aware of on line music stores :) Maybe HE IS I-Tunes (insert shocking music here)Da DAA DAAAAA

He could just have access to a Sears catalog and a credit card, or he lets someone know what he needs and they deliver whatever, whenever.

Yeah that is very interesting if he has been down there for years the sink looked really new! And all the dishes not a tarnish or scratch on them

EDIT: It cant be sun light because it was completely dark outside when they blew the hatch it has to be artificial light!!!!

My impression of the washer/dryer pair was that they appeared to be commercial machines - not your regular I need to do my family laundry machines. I don't think that Desmond brought these machines there - I think they were there when he got to this "bunker" - this "bunker" with "bunk" beds. I'm not sure how or why Desmond got there - my bet is that will be slowly answered in upcoming episodes - and at this point anything we speculate on is much like trying to complete a 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle with only 42 pieces. :) I found it very interesting to look at the items above the machines. Although they weren't very clear, I'm pretty sure on the top shelf was 2 bottles of Downy - or Snuggle -- light blue jugs of fabric softener, and on the lower shelf, another fabric softener bottle, a jug of liquid Tide or Wisk laundry detergent, a box of some sort of laundry powder and a bottle.. maybe bleach.. whatever... all things that would be out of place on the island above..
I still think there's some link to "down under" with the plane having departed from "down under"

I work at Whirlpool, where everyone is very excited about our Duet washer and dryer showing up on LOST (kudos to those of you who recognized them with only a couple of short glimpses...sheesh!) It's about the last place anyone would expect new appliances to appear (we began manufacturing them in 2001, so clearly, they haven't been down there long.) For the record, this was definitely not a product placement; in fact, we have no idea the Duet would be on the set until they showed up. So, as you can imagine, all the LOST fans here are doubly excited about the free publicity and very proud of our Duet! We've been discussing this at length, and no one has a clue why the producers put obviously modern appliances on the show along with the ancient computer and other items from various decades. (But we're happy they did!)
