Walt was talking backwards. What he said, when reversed, was the following: "Press the button. No button's bad."

SofiaA

I didn't get it either. I had the captions on and I don't think it had anything written for when Walt was whispering.

Walt was talking backwards. What he said, when reversed, was the following: "Press the button. No button's bad."How did you figure that?

Yeah how do you figure that one? who do you reverse with sound to find out what he was saying backwards? That's a bit of a confusion for me!

grhawi

Reverse it with Windows Sound Recorder. If you would like to listen, be my guest:

maybe the button jack was getting ready to push and the locke said i wouldnt do that

grhawi
09-21-2005, 11:27 PM
The "execute" button, in my opinion. Walt has been "altered" (dare I say "brainwashed") by the Others. Pressing the "execute" button is somehow beneficial to the Others and detrimental to the crash survivors. Thus, Walt's instruction and subsequent qualification that "no button's bad" is an attempt at deception and manipulation. Why he had to say it backwards, I do not know.

But remember Walt said "DONT OPEN IT"

Astraea

Or, vice versa. It will help him, and he hasn't been manipulated by the others yet. Free up the Others?

Count2Five
09-21-2005, 11:31 PM
Yeah, if they ever get Walt back, do you tihnk he might not remember anything like Claire didn't?

grhawi
09-21-2005, 11:32 PM
This was before he was captured and "altered" by the others, which gives evidence to my theory that opening the hatch and subsequently pressing the "execute" button is somehow beneficial to the others and detrimental to the survivors.

Astraea
09-21-2005, 11:35 PM
Forgot he warned against opening it. Great point!

chainofflowers1
09-21-2005, 11:38 PM
whoa! I think it's a little too soon to speculate that Walt has been altered. First of all, possible hallucinations pop up all the time on this island (Jack's Father, Boone's lucid dream about Shannon being mauled, the freaking polar bears). So what's to say Walt was ever even really there? Furthermore Walt is "special" in some way. Maybe he found a way to use that gift to reach Shannon. He has established a weird kind of bond with her, even trusting her enough to take Vincent. At any rate, he looked kind of creepy just standing there dripping and whispering...

The Czar
09-21-2005, 11:39 PM
he looked drenched in oil to me

Lost_Mommy
09-21-2005, 11:40 PM
2 points....

1-I don't think he could be brainwashed yet. They only just took him. This is still the same night on the island. I don't think it has been more then an hour or two since they took him.

and 2-there could be two meaning to this.
1-he could be saying in effect don't push a button. Like, "push the button? NO-button is bad!"

2-he could be actually saying push the button. Like, "push the botton...no button in bad." as in, non of the buttons are bad.

Don't know what to make of this yet, but it's really creepy.

But when it's been an hallucination, they usually do something to show it's just that. Explained that Jack's father was dead. Showed Shannon alive after Boone's thing. They didn't show that with Walt, short of him disappearing so fast.

Okay, here's a question for you...If it was a hallucination of Shannon's, why would she hallucinate about him being wet? She has no idea that he is no longer on the raft. Wouldn't she have imagined him as being dry? That is why I think he was really there, in a sort of spiritual way i mean.

Ps....as a mommy, I have to say to Lost-arbitor....go to bed! LOL

Remember when Locke asked kate if she saw the pillar of smoke grab him. Then he said "I wander what jack saw" I don't believe its not hallucinations but its the "smoke/creature/security systems taking on different shapes. i still can't figure why it would try to communicate with Shannon though... and talking about buttons.
And the script page mentioning Jack1 and Jack2. I think it will be the smoke not a clone.

My guess would be shannon is mentally weak at this point....and soon enough a hallucination of Boone will lead her somewhere(like Jack's dad) and she will push some button.

Just a guess.

This is so weird. I think it's a hallucination by the island. It has to. So many people have heard wispers or hallucinated. I think Locke is on the right track, even though it doesn't look like.

Other than that.. was it just me, or did Vincent look scaarry by himself in the dark lol.

UConnBigO
09-22-2005, 12:16 AM
I think it had to be a hallucination, why would they have Sayid mention that shannon hasnt slept in days or whatever, and also, its not as if every other hallucination was wrapped up in the same episode, jack saw his dad once, far away, and then the next episode covered the rest of the story.

also, i dont think simply pressing the 'execute' button is bad, the computer had a damn prompt, and desmond inputted something and hit it the first time, when jack almost hit it, it was a blank prompt, it just would have shown another line like this >: below it

now i dont think that desmond controls the island or the security system from the bunker in the hatch, but if he does, maybe like the thing or the 'island' does what he tells it to do, and when its done doing its command it prompts again, remember how it suddenly beeped and woke him up, then he rushed to the computer (and people say he entered the numbers immediately), so at least we know that he thinks he is needed at the computers, he could just be nuts like everyone else on the island and thinks hes doing something he isnt

i find it odd that everyone thinks hes this allknowing evil deity just because he was in jack's past, i say hes nuts, but he does know things, just like rousseau

Sway
09-22-2005, 12:35 AM
I don't think Walt was physically there, absolutely not. But maybe that's why Vincent was out there, he saw Walt too. I think the "drenched in water" thing was either Shanon's mind relating Walt to being on the raft = water, or water has something to do with "the others" (remember how Locke said 'the others' came from the water to kill Scott/Steve that night when they threatened Claire?)

My brother aced this.

Walt is somewhere on the island.

Vincent is the key. Remember, when Walt left, Vincent trekked out into the water after him. This episode, when Vincent runs off in the beginning, it isn't clear where he's going, or why he's even running at all. I think he's running to go find Walt.

Therefore Walt has to be back on the island somewhere.

I think they would flip it backwards to hide it from us, give us a hidden. But they can't get anything past us. They thought Hurley was well hidden in IT when he was on TV, but nearly everyone spotted it the first time around. I think this is a similar situation. I thought it was Walt trying to communicate with her - and because she was sleep deprived and he had a connection to her through Vincent (his closest companion) that it was the simplest for him to reach out to her.

However, we've never seen Walt do anything like this before, and he wasn't very good at it either - I mean, speaking backwards? C'mon kid, give her something she can use!

It's REAL easy to know this is a hallucination.

When Jack Hallucinated about his father, the writers took great care to say Jack hadn't slept in days, etc. This was even mentioned in an interview.

What did Sayid say to Shannon? That she looked tired and hungry, that she hasn't slept and she needed rest. Then boom, Walt appears.

Hallucination.

pftsobfreak
09-22-2005, 06:48 AM
^ ^ Exactly! And Walt just disappeared into thin air. Hallucination.

I just started browsing this forum just recently, and I don't know what you're talking about when you mention how people figured out "hurley and being hidden" Can anyone tell me what that was about?

In Jin's flashback, you can clearly see Hurley on the TV, but the writers/producers tried hiding, hoping that maybe a few people might see, but everybody saw it.

but did jack really hallucinate that his father was on the island
maybe he really was

so um is walt saying that he only answers to her or is he being all willy wonka with the buttons.

i think "i answer to her only to her" makes so much more sense.

and i don't think it was walt but i agree that the key to finding walt is thru vincent
and vincent lead shannon to where she could "see" walt

ok, I have an idea here, just follow me for a minute. Now we all know one simple truth, Walt is special and has special powers. It is widely theorized that he made up the polar bear if not in the pilot, than at least he made it come to life in his episode for the purpose of his father paying attention to him or something.

There is a thing that one can do through meditation, astral projection, that allows the person to project their spirit out of their body to see other things. My theory is this, what if Walt was doing this in an attempt to communicate with Shannon. We know he already feels a connection to her, he gave her the dog. He's scared of Locke because of the hatch thing, so it makes sense he would go to her. Now, what if this is a reaction on his part to being so scared and he subconsciously astral projects himself? He's a child so I don't imagine he would be very practiced at it. And what if the message that he is trying to send her is garbled because of that? It would also explain why the image wasn't there for very long, he's not good at it yet. That or something happened that made the image cut itself off.

Just me thinking out loud. Here is a link on Astral Projection if you're curious.

Ok, just a thought but Walt was "reading" that comic that Hurley had on the plane, it was in spanish but Walt said he liked the pictures, wasn't there a big a$$ polar bear in the comic? Maybe thats where he came up with that. Anyone remeber what Walt was doing when the first polar bear showed up??

I think Walt wasn't there physically but mentaly, just like jack's dad. I mean, Jack followed his dad that just happen to lead to the caves with the casket there?? a Hallucination doesnt have meaning like that..

I don't know if Walt was actually there or not, but I do believe that Walt was trying to communicate with Shannon.

Although, I'm listening to a different soundclip than the .wav found in this topic. I'm actually hearing "don't press the button, the button is bad" played backwards. Hurley said "Don't light the fuse, the numbers are bad!", so the manner of speaking has been used before. We'll see what happens, but I wouldn't be surprised if somebody pushes a button and something bad happens.

I don't think Shannon seeing Walt was a hallucination at all. The reason being that she heard the whispers right before she saw him. We know the whispers are real because other characters have heard them including Sayid and Sawyer, who are pretty stable mentally. Danielle has heard the whispers and heard them saying they were coming for the boy, who she thought was Aaron but turned out to be Walt.

We know the whispers are from The Others because of what Danielle heard and what happened to Walt. We know The Others are real b/c we saw them take Walt.

Shannon heard the whispers, which must have meant that The Others were close by, who we know took Walt. Maybe when they are whispering they have some way of hiding themselves and for a moment were not able to hide Walt or Walt found some way with his abilities to allow Shannon to see him.

Plus, why would Vincent have run off? He must have sensed Walt's presence.

Remember how Locke said Walt was more different than the rest of us when he was talking to Michael in Season 1. Walt was able to kill that bird that flew into the window in one of his flashbacks, maybe he has some kind of telepathic power which enabled him to try and communicate with Shannon. Just throwing that out there.

jedi517 i don't think Walt was there and you have a good point, it's possible he somehow made Shannon see him without him being there to communicate with her. It doesn't appear that he has affected anything around him, you don't hear him appear in the leaves or weeds around him, and you don't hear him leave. So I'm thinking he somehow done a telepathic thing to communicate with Shannon.

I think it was either a Hallucination or a Vision of sorts.

And the Whipsers are just an auditory hallucination caused by paranoia and happening in certain parts of the island. Maybe a plant with a slightly Hallucinigenic Properties to it they they have brushed up against. Maybe sounds produced from the Hatch if someone gets "too close" to scare the beejezus out of someone.

1) Walt is small and quick on his feet.

2) Walt was sweating profusely after running a good half mile.

3) Sometimes a whisper is just a whisper.

theres a big difference when someone sweat compared to when someone gets out of water

I think a big part of the show entails "living thru your subconscious " thoughts.
This also explains why people see more hallucinations when they are tired, and
transcendental meditation is a lower brain function as well, which could be Walt's method to communicate.

In Jin's flashback, you can clearly see Hurley on the TV, but the writers/producers tried hiding, hoping that maybe a few people might see, but everybody saw it.

Thanks for the clear up! :D Do you happen to remember what episode had Jin's flashback?

Sorry for the double post but, I could have sworn you could hear Sawyer's whispers? I'm pretty sure I remember this because when it was the scene I got really scared and covered my ears and just read the subtitles lol. :D

Didn't Boone hear whispers before he died? The whispers were sort of related to teh way he died to, something like "everything falls down," that was really off but I don't remember the exact lines. The whisper sort of related to the story he told about his nanny who kept walking up and down the stairs and then one day she just fell (don't remember if she died or just hurt her leg).

I was just wondering if anyone had more thoughts to the significance of the water (or other liquid?). We know everything is put in for a reason, and with something that obvious and eye catching i imagin theres a pretty good one for it.

I cant make my mind up which of the theory's already stated i agree with most but i cant say any of them that link well with the rest of the story in any way (for me personally and my interpretation of the story so far i mean.)

One thing i could suggest however,

If Walt was somehow trying to communicate with shannon through his cognitions there is evidence to support it.
Remeber the last thing walt saw? his father in the water bobing up and down (very wet of course?) i imagin that image is still very strong in his mind, maybe it was incorperated in his attempts to talk to shannon.

just a thought, its bugging me now lol >_< lost has a way of doing that to me at every turn, thank god for tivo.

ok, i was watching the bonus features on the dvd set and j.j. abrams said that walt has phycic powers.
remember walt warned locke not to open the hatch? locke opened it anyways, then walt was taken.
also, walt new that locke would open it, and vincent and and walt are connected, vincent always leads someone to walt, (like in the episode where the polar bear is attacking him.) so i think that walt new he was going to be taken, so he gave vinvent to shannon, so that way shannon could help and feel needed on the island. as long as vincent belongs to shannon then he would have to lead her to where walt needed someone.

also, i kinda agee with the person whom stated water can represent baptism or change, maybe the others are already trying to change him to there ways OR he tried to escape them and return to his father.

I read a theory a while back that the polar bears and the monster thing were some kind of nanotechnology that could take on other forms. That's a little weird but it seems to fit pretty well. It could also explain Walt as a technological recreation or holograph rather than a hallucination.

I know its trailing of the point a little here, but im just trying to understnad walt a bit more. This might be nothing but it just bugged me the way it was presented,

Anyone remember near the end of the last episode of season 1, when hurley only just made the flight, as he was entering the plane he looked at walt, and smiled and gave him a thumbs up, then walt smiled back.

The two seem linked in quite a few ways, the comic for example. Just want to know other peoples thoughts on this and/or Walt in general (related to his apearance in this episode if possible :D)

taurmauk

I hear "wheres the button" to, man its freaky though. Its possible the whispers are the people from the tail of the plane, and they are around in some other "dimension" or something. Walt has the ability to make what he thinks about appear, the pictures of the birds and a bird appears, and then the polar bear. Instead of projecting himself, maybe he imagined her so she could see him, but because he is now on the other "dimension" he sounds backwards to her.

First of all, is Walt really back? Or was Shannon hallucinating? If he is back, where did he go when other people came to he to see what was going on? How do you think he escaped?

Secondly, all I head him say was "Shhhh!" What is this button business about? What button?
Walt was talking backwards. What he said, when reversed, was the following: "Press the button. No button's bad."

netaK

my family has 2 theories about that walt thing...

1. its not walt, its some computerd hologram or something, thats why he spoke backwards, some error or something.

2.somehow that is walt, he says "press the button" knowing its good, but then "the others" or something somehow controll him and make him say "NO! button's bad!!!" or soemthing like that :P

relientmike
09-23-2005, 12:02 AM
What execute button? The one on the computer in the hatch?

The "execute" button, in my opinion. Walt has been "altered" (dare I say "brainwashed") by the Others. Pressing the "execute" button is somehow beneficial to the Others and detrimental to the crash survivors. Thus, Walt's instruction and subsequent qualification that "no button's bad" is an attempt at deception and manipulation. Why he had to say it backwards, I do not know.

UConnBigO
09-23-2005, 12:07 AM
I cant believe how dumb so many of these theories sound, im sorry.

im not trying to be hurtful of other peoples rediculous explanations, I really think it was a hallucination, simply because weve seen hallucinations so many other times, why would it be a hologram, or walt projecting himself

and who said that walt 'killed the bird in his flashback', he was reading about the bird, and he got angry/excited about his guardians fighting and created the bird, and the bird flew into the window and died, he didnt kill it per se. I could see it being that walt tried to contact the people on the island, maybe through vincent, we know he has a connection to vincent, so maybe he lead vincent away so shannon would look, then sayid was there, so he had vincent run off, sayid chaces him, and then shannons alone so he contacted her

and i definitely without a doubt hear walt saying backwards, "press the button, no button's bad", and i dont read into it so much that i think the backwardsness has meaning, the makers of the show know there are tons of people who are gay for lost and know we will dig and dig into the shows audio and video and find this, and be blown away, they are just giving us fun stuff to figure out and draw meanings from, but these meanings people have are rediculous

i think walt is completely safe in the other's hands. they will try to brainwash him, but i do believe he will be back and not evil, or not completely evil, maybe a little of both

Taylor!

When walt was reading the textbook about birds in the flashback and then the bird crashed into the window, it would seem that walt made the bird appear. His stepdad said that walt is different, when he's around things happen (or something like that).
So wouldn't it stand to reason, that Walt, after reading the comic book with polar bears in it, made one appear. Walt was attacked by the polar bear after his dad burned his comic book. (I think he was reading the comic book in the episode where sawyer shot the bear) Since then I don't think we have seen a polar bear.
So maybe a lot of other things that are going on are from the comic book, and Walt is making it happen. Certainly that's why the others want him.
Interesting that it's Hurley's comic book. He certainly has made things happen after his use of the numbers.

Walt is dominated or remoted by 'others' when he met shannon,

Didn't Walt say "Shhhh" before he spoke backwards. "Shhhh" sounds the same forward or backward. So if he were projected in such manner, he would have said "Shhhh" after he spoke backward. If someone shhhh's someone else, the usually do the shhhhing first. :)

So here's my low down on the whole what he said:
My mom says it sounds like Press the button, they'll put us back. I agree with grhawi on the thread with Press the button, no button's bad.

I think that with Walt not wanting the hatch to be opened, knowing that it was going to be opened, and then wanting to get off the island because of it being opened, indicates that the Others have control of Walt or Walt's image.
I think Locke said not to press the "execute" button a.) because he had a gun pointed to his head, and b.) because he doesn't want to get off the island because he doesn't feel as if he has completed his destiny.

Hey all,
I took the Walk.mp3 file and slowed it a bit and to me it sounds like he is saying "Press the button. No, the button's bad." Like, the first part is tempting her to push it, but the second part is a worrying not too... Anyway, I've uploaded mine onto my server.

I took the audio of Walt's whispers, put it through noise removal, compression, EQ, etc., and after listening to it hundreds of times, I've come to a definite conclusion as to just what he's whispering.

"Where's the mutt? No one's bad."

So here's my low down on the whole what he said:
My mom says it sounds like Press the button, they'll put us back.

I could almost here that. I think that would be an interesting answer. I totally don't hear the last word as bad. To me I think it sounds like "press the button, the button's mad" or "press the button, the buttons baaa." But those don't really make any sense so I'm at a loss. It's totally creepy though.

One thing I thought of was that maybe the whole message got chopped off, and he actually wanted to say "Tell Jack not to press the button, the button's bad" or something to that effect. It was just easier for him to send a message to Shannon because they have a closer relationship.
This then reminded me of when Boone died and he said "Tell Shannon...":thud:
That line has been driving me crazy forever because if just wanted to tell her he loved her or something, I think the writers wouldn't have cut him off like that. So I guess where I'm going with this is that maybe there is something important for Shannon to know about the island, and the survivors figure it out right before they die...assuming Walt is dead or near death. If anyone saw "Signs" you might get what I mean by that.
Anyway, I'll quit rambling now. :blahblah:

please help!

also, did you notice the time of death (SUV driver) was anounced at 8:15? you can hear it in the background in jack's first flashback, when he pulls that peice of metal out of sarah..another 815-number

Oh I see - I think the reason why he looks disturbed is perhaps because he realises that Kate is right? Or perhaps because he is reminded that she might care less about him & his feelings than he cares about her.

I think that Walt was saying either "Don't press the button, the button is bad" or "Don't press the button, Locke must be spared." The second would make sense because Desmond threatened to shoot Locke.

Also, maybe the "Walt" that Shannon saw was some sort of projection. That would explain why Walt was talking backwards--the projection was playing backwards. This led me to the question, how is it that Shannon happened to come to that part of the jungle the same moment that the projection began to play there?

It seems that Walt has some weird power over animals, so maybe he got Vincent to run to a certain place, knowing that when Shannon went looking for him, she would go to the place where the projection would play.

One more thing... Walt appeared to be rushing, maybe so that the Others wouldn't see him sending this secret warning to Shannon. Someone else said that he appeared to be trying not to move his mouth, like someone does when they don't want other people to read their lips. That would make sense.

[QUOTE=AmyMac]ok, I have an idea here, just follow me for a minute.

I'll buy that theory, it makes sense to me. :o

I think Walt has more control than people think. There is an episode, can't remember which where Walt is sad and it is pouring with rain, someone makes him happy and the rain instantly stops.

It might be the other way around as in he is happy and gets sad so it starts to rain. If someone can remind me as to the reason it would be great.

If I remember correctly it has to do with Michael looking for Vincent

I've stated this before on another thread, watch the pilot episode again, when Kate, Jack & Charlie are hiking to the cockpit we see them being watched from the bushes. As the camera pans out we see that they are being watched by Vincent, the next shot is of Locke sitting on the beach, staring out to sea, then back to Vincent watching our adventurers walking off. This scene has always stuck inmy head is it seemed to serve no purpose. Sure, the dog is watching them, big deal. Right? So why the 5 second shot of Locke interwined with the voyueristic Vincent?

I think Vincent could be more than a mere pooch.

This just came to me, (and apologies if someone already has said this elsewhere but I tried to search for it) but if Walt said something backwards having been in the custody of the others, then this sort of relates to what I recall in the teaser trailer for season 2 ---- there is a quick shot of a wave seemingly going backwards against a sunset/sunrise. I wouldn't put too much thought into the video clip of the waves running in reverse. You see this frequently from shots filmed along the shore, as during production the shot is filmed zooming in (or zooming out), and in editing the director decides to play it the other direction.

Not discounting the idea that time is playing tricks on the island, as this thought has popped up from a couple of people. I just wouldn't put too much weight on this one item :D

Excellent thought. Ties in well with some of the show's themes. THEMES are important. Sometimes folks seem to be going down (white) rabbit trails, but this show is full of themes that you can follow from beginning to end. EYES are definitely a theme. Good stuff.

Listened, listened and listened again. I don't pretend to make sense of Walt's apparent contradiction, but I only know what I think I have heard.

"Press the button. The button's bad."

I think some have resisted this answer because it is difficult to explain. I know I can't explain why Walt would instruct a fellow survivor to press a "bad button", but I nonetheless believe that is what I am hearing him say. So, for those who dismiss this by responding "Why would he say that?" I would challenge you to consider that just because we can't understand why does not mean that is not what he said.

I love the part in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe when the Professor is talking to the children about the idea of another world inside the wardrobe. The children are understandably disbelieving because they can't explain something so mysterious. The Professor walks them through the evidence, namely, does Lucy lie? In the end, this learned man suggests that while the reality of another world in a wardrobe SEEMS unthinkable, if the evidence suggests that it is there, it may very well be there.

Forget the question of "Why" Walt has said whatever he has said for the moment SO THAT you can ask yourself the more pertinent first question: "WHAT did he say?" To that end, I believe I am HEARING, "Press the button. The button's bad."

From a linguistics point of view: As far as whether one of the key words in quote is "The" or "No", in a whisper a lazy "Th" can sound pretty close to an "N". In fact, it would sound like a soft "D", coming out more like "Da button's bad" (Da Bears...interesting...). Walt speaks a little lazily (which is only to say that like most people he does not make a great effort to annunciate). It could be either, but I am hearing "The" (or more accurately, "Da").

well i keep listening to it and ive came to final conclusion, i think he says "press the button, dont the buttons bad" and yes it is confusing and makes no sence, but what if he is meaning it as a question type thing - "press the button? dont the buttons bad" if tht makes sence to u guys and gals!

I did a poll a while ago, and the majority thought what he said included a "no" in it... http://lost-forum.com/showthread.php?t=14646

Someone needs to figure out what the key sequence was that Desmond did on the keyboard at the beginning of the episode. I know there is someone out there that can figure it out!!

I was just watching Jimmy Kimmel and Malcolm David Kelley was on there. He confirmed that what Walt was saying was "Don't push that button" and it was also recorded in reverse, which I beleive someone mentioned before. He wouldn't say what "that button" is though, he said we'd have to watch and find out.

Hehehe, I ran to my room as soon as I saw it. Thankfully I was already online and logged into the forum, so I was able to get here pretty quick. I figured someone would have already beat me. I was suprised that they didn't.

Well, that clears it up then. The "Don't" I assume is at the very beginning, thus saying "Don't press the button. The button's bad." I wondered if that wasn't the case, but couldn't hear the "Don't" as it was nearly inaudible. More like a pause before the words "press the button." Well, know that we know what, we can further entertain the why.

I just think that walk does have some special powers and I think it's more of a connection with vincent than Shannon he was going to show himself to vincent but the best way to do that was via shannon. Maybe vincent had already seen him when shannon came along.

Dude, if you had been reading this thread you would have seen that I already posted this. We already know what Walt said because the kid who plays Walt told us on Jimmy Kimmel last night.

And yet some STILL would like to argue about WHAT was said!
