Im not sure about the adam and eve thing, but one thing caught my attention early on. There is a representative for every race on the island. Theres caucasian, african american, asian, middle eastern and latin. Is the show just politically correct or does that have any bearing on the story iwonder.

That is interesting, I guess you should ask whoever runs the show at the next Lost con.

sounds just politically correct...ya know how everyone is afraid of offending anyone else...though i could see how the producers would be able to encorporate it into the show to have a haidden meaning...

The idea of race is just a social thing, it's not biological, at least in humans.
You may think you've put down all the "races", but some people may feel left out. For example, Australian Aboriginees feel they're their own race. Some Cherokee people I've spoken to online feel they're of a difference race than the Cree. Polynesians, Indians, Kazakhstanians, Ethiopians, Turkish, etc. people could distinguish themselves as a different race than the ones you've listed.
Some Indians that live around here don't like being labelled the same race as Afghans/Pakistanians/Iraqis/Iranians, etc. Some Polynesians don't like being labelled "black" or "Asian". Some Kazakhs don't like being labelled Asian or white. Some Ethiopians don't like being labelled "mixed race".
Some say there are three human races, some say five, some say three hundred (I'm serious).
Me, being a person studying Genetics in university, have seen that there is only one modern humans race (us), and that labels you've listed are just social constructs that differ from culture to culture. For example, Chinese and Indians around here usually think there are four races: white, yellow, black, and brown -- brown being Indians, yellow being Chinese.
I notice Americans tend to think of three races: Caucasian, Asian, and African-American. When I watch TV, most commercials have four people. Two people, the main characters, are "white". The other two are "black" and "Asian". Of course, on the rare occasion one of them gets to talk, and it's usually the "black" guy, it's something like "Yo man, that is tight!"
So, I really don't think the writers of Lost were trying to insert "tokens of every race". Yunjin Kim auditionned for Kate, remember? Kate could've been a Korean-Canadian if they didn't prefer Evangeline Lilly. If they only wanted the Kate character to be a "white" female, they wouldn't of let Yunjin even audition for her in the first place, because the description would've been for a "young, white female".

If that's the case then where's the token gay person :p
i just think it's very natural to have different races on the plane. it doesn't make sence if only one race survive on the island :p
and this make the show great! i love the chemical among them!!

Gay? What about ugly people! Yeah, what the show needs is an ugly, elderly, blind, gay, eskimo (peferably one with some exotic, but treatable, disease):D
Okay, so, I'm a little skeptical of the politically correct intent - or of it having any relevance to the plot. I just think it's smart marketing for the shows producers to include as wide a range of characters as possible in order to draw in viewers who feel the need to identify with at least one character.;)

I don't think it was done to be politically correct. If so, why didn't JJ Abrams do it for "Alias" as well? (Actually, I've never watched "Alias" so, I could be way off the mark. I'm just going by what I see in its promos.) I think there are reasons it was done, one of which is the fact that you often find people of different races on flights.

They had made the comment that since it was an international flight they didn't want it to be all americans. I think they did it just because it is natural.

Can you provide genetic proof that there are different races? And not Y chromosome and mtDNA markers.

While every race may not be portrayed, Lost is extremely multi-cultural in comparison to pretty much every other show on TV, not to mention movies. This is probably just because it was an international flight, but I think it is still significant that the casting is so diverse. If this show were made 20 years ago they would probably be all white and mostly American, even if it were an international flight. Perhaps this is a good start for other shows to follow suit and maybe they will have more than just the token black guy.

All but restating a previous post, feel free to ignore it:
Where are the Native Americans (of all different subraces - Andeans to Aleuts)? The Polynesians? In addition, 'African' encompasses many different subraces as well, as does 'Asian' (Indians are not the same as Vietnamese, who are not the same as Malay, who are not the same as Koreans). Where are the odd-man-out races, like the Basque or the Australian Aborigine? Where are the Rroma, who are originally Indo-Aryan and now a conglomeration of many races?
Just some examples. While I agree that Lost is very multicultural, keep in mind that there are many, many more races and subraces that are not represented. In addition, in genetics (from what I understand), there are three races - Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and Negroid. If the intent is to represent all of the races, why is the show biased heavily in favor of Caucasoid? (Note: Rhetorical question.)
This one doesn't fly, IMO.
