I wonder if someone has noticed that the hatch is much bigger in season two,

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/6069/escotilla25wx.jpg

than in season one,

http://img332.imageshack.us/img332/1653/escotilla9gt.jpg

Maybe they realized that it was too small for Hurley? :D

looks the same size to me. just that in the first pictures its length ways and close up, in the second its showing from the shortest edge and from far back.

It must be the same size! Why would they build another one... The show is very expensive as it is

I work as a technical designer, and I can promise you that now the hatch is bigger.

Ofcourse it looks bigger in Season 2, that pic is closer up than the one from the first season.

Yes, but I'm not only talking about the size of the hatch by itself, but the size compared with the rest of the cylinder.

I think it's obvious that the hatch is bigger. It was 1/3 of the cylinder's top , and now it's 1/2.

Looking at this picture : http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimagepopup&pid=34358&fullsize=1 , the hatch seems slightly bigger (at least its door) in the season 2 clip. I'm not really sure but if you watch the size of Loocke's hands in the 1x19 cap, they look quite big compared to the hatch door.
But then again it looks like exactly the same, as someone said ,why would they build a new one ?

It doesn't look any bigger but it looks tilted in the second season picture :S
Might be the camera angle though.

That's what I'm thinking. It has to be a trick of a camera angle.

Well if it is bigger they probably had to rebuild it because they realized that there would be issues with people going in and out of it etc. and it was too small. Or maybe the island made it bigger ooooooooooooooooooooooooo.... ;)

They probably thought that if they made it bigger...would the fans really mind?

It doesn't look that much bigger. and the part people go down looks the same size. It probably is just the angle of the camera

A hatch is a door, which was blown off. This is the tunnel

from The American Heritage Dictionary:

hatch 1. a. An opening, as in the deck of a ship, in the roof or floor of a building, or in an airplane. b. The cover for such an opening.

...so the correct term is hatch in both of these senses of the definition.

Yes, the hatch does look larger in the season two picture especially when comparing its size in proportion to the people near it in the pictures. (if that makes any sense! :rotflol: It's after 1 am and I'm not totally awake right now.)

Yup it looks bigger. Probably made it bigger so they could fit people thru it for all the good stuff that Season 2 will bring. Don't overthink it too much I doubt there is any signifigance.

Who knows....

Why is it that they found the hatch on the side of a cliff but the rest of the episodes its in the middle of the jungle?

Remember Loche and Boon were walking along a path that ran next to a steep rocky hill. In all the episodes after that it's in the middle of the jungle.

Ummm.... they changed their minds about where it was? Actually I'd been wondering the same thing!

NO it is bigger, remember the last scene from s1 when the camera was backing down the shaft and early scences in s2 with the camera going up. the hole and shaft are both much bigger - PS Shannons hair is also drastically longer.

In the season one pic, look at Kate's shoe, it is approx. 1/6 of the width of the hatch opening. Then look at Locke's shoe, it looks approx. 1/6 of the width too.

Heres a comparison pic so theres no doubt.

from exodus2. Tried to get a picture with the camera further up but no luck. If you have the dvd watch this bit again to see how small it is. The ladder is very narrow.

From s2 ep1. The opening is MUCH bigger. Probably about the length of jack across. The ladder is also much wider.

I looked at all the pictures and I am of the opinion that they are the same size. It's just a difference in perspective and light.

Judging by the following photos alone,

(Season 1) http://img332.imageshack.us/img332/1653/escotilla9gt.jpg
(Season 2) http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/6069/escotilla25wx.jpg

it certainly appears to me that the hatches differ in size, or at least in relation to the whole cylinder. In the photo from season 1, its about a third of the cylinder length, while in the one from season 2, it's about half of it.

Another way to compare them is in relation to the actors' bodies. If we use Kate's chest for this example (:D), and imagine how it will fit in the hatch, we will see a significant difference.

All the pictures that have been show - they are at different angles people and farther distance. Of course the hatch is going to look bigger if a shot of it is taken at 20 feet vs 100 feet. Common frickin' sense.

I do believe they are the same size. The first two, with Kate she can stand on it about twice and have a little room, as well as on the second it looks like that. With the other two, they are further away leaning into the tunnel, the second one they are much closer and it seems as if they're about to stand up so they're going to be smaller with the opening compared to the one shot further away.

It makes sense to me. :x I probably have it worded all wrongly. x-x But, yeah, they're the same size?

It is much bigger in season 2.

Compare hatch size to the whole construction top.
Season1: http://psyborg.rpg.pl/lost/hatch-size/season_1.jpg
Season2: http://psyborg.rpg.pl/lost/hatch-size/season_2.jpg

One thing is clearly visible in above shots - in first season the hatch's lenght is about 1/3 of the construction ( examine the first photo ). You can also compare Locke and hatch.

In the second, the hatch covers much more area of the construction's top ( see photo number 2 ). Also view from below shows the hatch is much more spacey:
http://psyborg.rpg.pl/lost/hatch-size/season_2_from_below.jpg ( notice Locke's spread arms and proportion Jack's body vs. hatch's longer side ).

Nevertheless, it doesn't matter. In first season the hatch it THE MYSTERY HATCH -the only important thing is its there and we dont know what is it for. It's more like a symbol.

In second season they made it bigger strictly for technical purposes - it has to play its role and let people through it.

Call it a movie mistake if you like.

If you put the images looking from below relative to the size of Jack and Locke, then you get this image:

http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/1923/lostbiggerhatchproof1rz.th.jpg (http://img147.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lostbiggerhatchproof1rz.jpg)

So much for "common sense". I guess "proportions" and "relativity" isn’t common sense nowadays.

Proof by example.

O.K so they made the hatch bigger in season 2 but Hurley has never used it. He uses the BIG front door! :D

Darkbear

Um. Does it really matter?

They probably made it bigger so they could get a camera man and Kate/Locke/Jack shots properly at the same time. Cold you imagine the shot you'd get if the hatch and tunnel were the same size - nothing but Locke's backsude. Hmm, that would have been interesting viewing....

I noticed it too. Straight away, but fgs, it's not like it detracted from the story did it?

I think that specific "hole" is lsightly bigger. :/ And I think Walt's a bit bigger too. :P

But then again it looks like exactly the same, as someone said ,why would they build a new one ?

Well...I know for SURE they have built more hatch doors...
of different size and such..even the dents are different...
If you look closely at some of the scences when they show the hatch door you will notice that the word "quarantine" is sometimes a little closer to the edge than others..

when the hatch falls from the sky in the finally the word is much further from the hatch doors window than it is when Eko looks at it just a few scenes before...
